Best Video Game Soundtracks

I was just wondering some of the forums thoughts and opinions on which games had the best soundtracks.

Personally my favorite soundtrack all time is from Donkey Kong Country 2 for the SNES. I also like the music from Super Mario Sunshine, Chrono Cross and Trigger, Sonic Heroes, Illusion of Gaia and the Final Fantasy games, especially X are ones I like also.

Any recommendations?

  • For me by far and nothing comes close to these ....

    Mega Man 2

    Castlevania 2 Simons Quest

I have alot more favorites but these 2 are simply classic

I guess I should add at least one favorite, I always like the music from Wrestlemania Challenge for nes. I just loved the way all the wrestlers music sounds and the music they played when you lost a match was epic
  • Mega Man 2, Super Castlevania, Final Fantasy III, Breath of Fire 2.
  • Virtual-On for Sega Saturn was rockin'.

So was it's sequel Oratorio Tangram for Dreamcast.

Although, you really have to hunt for the soundtracks.

    Yes!

Plus Wizards & Warriors, Metroid, Metroid II, Zelda, Zelda II.....

If you're playing the game while listening, nothing is more immersive than Metroid II.
  • I love the soundtrack from Gyruss. Pretty easy to make a good one out of Bach.

Another that is amazing is Zelda Link to the Past.

  • Double Dragon has an awesome main theme that really pumps you up. I really enjoy the music in Nightmare on Elm street, it has original tunes and it really pulls off this creepy vibe. All the Megaman games of course, I also think that Ninja Gaiden's soundtrack gets overlooked. Castlevania has the best on the nes though.
  • Streets of Rage 2
  • zombies ate my neighbors
  • I'd say Castlevania 2 and 3, Super Mario Bros (over and underworld stage themes,) Mega Man 2, and Final Fantasy 4(2usa) were some really big ones that really are memorable and suck you in.
  • My two favorite are Donkey Kong Country 2 and Perfect Dark. So so so good! The DKC 2 soundtrack is awesome stand alone and the Perfect Dark soundtrack just sets a great mood.
  • Also, Castle Crashers
  • Bionic commando rearmed, mega man 2, super castlevania 4, and all metal gear games had great soundtracks.

If you enjoy the music of Bionic Commando, you should check out the 360/PS3 Bionic Commando, the music remix is really outstanding, probably the best part of the game in fact.

Oh, how could I possibly forget nes Batman. Some of the best music on the nes! I think it's really amazing how mood setting it is and it really is amazing what they were able to create for an 8 bit console.

  • Battletoads is epic, I also really enjoyed Maniac Mansion it had some really original sounding stuff.
  • If you're into orchaestra music, both Super Mario Galaxy soundtracks and Super Smash Brothers Brawl (the gamecube one) all three are great.

I love talking about VG music though. The Mr. Gimmick soundtrack is so freaking good. Castlevania 1 and 2 are other favorites. And of course the Megaman series always has catchy tunes. www.nesguide.com's 8-bit radio is a good way to hear a bunch of different songs. I've actually bought games just so I can hear the music.

  • I gotta say I'm loving the Battle Kid soundtrack. Just picked this up, and it's fantastic. Though I haven't made it to the third checkpoint yet. :-(

I've been cranking the Ristar soundtrack in my car lately; great stuff. My girlfriend thinks I'm insane. "How can you listen to this monotonous video game crap?"
  • I'm a little partial, but I like the "Gimmick!" soundtrack.

For "newer" games, Chrono Trigger (Frog's Theme > All).

For real new games, I'm digging the Scott Pilgrim's soundtrack. (DLC on PS3 and 360)
  • I think Sailor Moon Another Story on S. Famicon has a very amazing soundtrack
  • Silent Hill 1 all the way down. For the Nightmare on Elm Street lovers, here's a sweet remix:

  • Hah Pac-Man Fever! I had that tape when it came out, played it so hard that it got stretched, and even then I ran it until it was just unbearable. Sadly, I know they started to re-publish it, but the price was a bit high for my liking because they know they can get the 80s former kid audience on it.
  • As far as best goes, I'd have to go with Chrono Trigger, but I definitely have to mention Secret of Evermore. I know some people think there's not enough actual music in the game, but I love all the ambient pieces - really creates a great atmosphere in the game.
  • Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 3/6, Super Castlevania, Batman, Mega Man 2, Shadow of the Colossus, Heavy Rain.
  • Don't kill be, but a few years ago I was into WoW for a summer, and that game has some pretty sweet soundtracks.
  • I love the Shadowrun soundtrack.

get it on vinyl, as it's only the original pressing. just like the other video game songs that came out in the 80's. nothing beats vinyl, u can't prove it to me even if it was remastered into 7.2 surround on blu-ray. scientifically digital sound can't produce enough bandwidth in the sound spectrum or frequency.  gotta love the quad vinyl records they made. real surround sound back in the day. 4 channels, using 2 vinyl record sound setups. like a lot of the pink floyd records.

seems everyone is fixd on games that are critically acclaimed as well. maybe it just sticks w u as u play an awesome 'ucking game.

anyone enjoy the music in not so known games just as much? or does the carpet hav to match the drapes.
