Halo Reach is Amazing

  • Honestly I've never seen the same greatness that everyone else has in the Halo series has. It is very accessible though, so if your not into FPSs it's very easy to get into. Also the online isn't as punishing either due to it being less twitch driven.

That being said I did get to play Reach recently, and man it was a lot better than any of the other Halos I've ever played. It's loaded with options, and improvements I never thought I'd ever see. I still can't believe they added an anti-clench option. That has been a problem plaguing me since Mega Man gained the slide move. No longer will I zoom in trying to suddenly turn, melee someone, or something else my giant lobster hands will do to crush the controller(or slide megaman off a cliff accidently.) =)

The only flaws I can note would be the loadout screen doesn't always give you enough time to switch before you respawn, spawn camping with the tank is way too powerful(plus tanks are really hard to take out when the few weapons that do kill it spawn too far away), and not all maps are winners(certain large maps especially aren't great.)

    Overall I was impressed!
  • Finished off the campaign on Heroic this weekend, beat the first two missions on Legendary. Got halfway through 3 then turned if off, only to realize that Checkpoints didn't roll over so I have to start from the beginning of 3 again. Which means I may very well stop here, don't want to replay the beginning again.

Hope to get in some more Online gaming this week, haven't really done a lot of competitive multiplayer yet.
  • I have been a Halo fan since the the first game came out and have always enjoyed the multiplayer and the campaign. I just finished up the campaign on normal today and it was way too short. It seemed no longer than ODST, and that was just supposed to be an expansion of Halo 3. I was just very underwhelmed by the campaign and didn't enjoy it all that much.

I started playing more new(to me) FPS games than ever this year, whereas the years before I was addicted to Halo 3 online and previous to that Halo 2. Games like COD 2, COD MW and MW2, Bad Company 2, L4D 2 all featured a much more entertaining campaign than Reach.

I also felt like the graphics, while improved in some areas, weren't really THAT much better than Halo 3.

I think what really made me lose interest in Halo 3 online is all the people screaming and swearing  constantly. At some point, it just stopped being fun for me and it's really hard for me to get into multiplayer these days. I played a few matches of Reach on the final day of the beta but that was it. It seemed fun though a little gimmicky with all of the new features such as jet packs and invisibility. I have yet to try it since getting the game last Tuesday but will hopefully spend some time online with it this weekend.
  • Halo Reach is actually the only Halo game I do like. I usually play my PS3, but my brother got the game and for some reason I decided to try it out, and surprisely liked it.

Yeah, I hear ya man. When I go solo in multiplayer, I go to my system settings and turn the voice volume down, keeping any retard comments from reaching. Just don't feel like dealing with people's BS.. I just want to rack up some kills without being bothered, old Quake style. I will enable it though if I'm playing with a group of friends

Obnoxious people are inevitable in Halo. Same could be said about any main stream game on Xbox Live.  Most the time I won't even wear my headset unless I am playing with friends.

With Halo though it seems above and beyond.

Teabagging was a rarity in Call of Duty games. I think I got teabagged more in the one night of playing Halo Reach online than all times a played Call of Duty.

But Halo has always been known for "short" campaigns, I don't see how this is anything new?

Also, you played on Normal, what do you expect?  If you play on Normal you can run n' gun the whole time at a very casual pace without having to worry about life.  If you play on Heroic you're forced to be a bit more decisive / use cover, and "Heroic" is advertised as the difficulty for Halo veterans to use.  Why ruin the experience by doing an easy difficulty?

And then Legendary is just god awfully hard.  I might try to beat it one of these days but after 2 missions on Legendary I'm not looking forward to 8 more.
  • I think people are finally figuring out how to play these last few days, because I have been getting wrecked in Slayer.

Maybe I'm just remembering the previous games incorrectly but it definitely seemed shorter than the first three. The campaign was hardly interesting enough to go back and play through on a higher difficulty just so it takes longer to finish. Maybe it's because I just played through the first Halo a few months ago for the first time in seven years or so but I was expecting more.

But anyway, not trying to be a Halo troll or anything because I've always been a big fan of the series. Was just hoping for a little more out of this one since it's Bungies final contribution to the Halo world.

I'm going to jump into the multiplayer this weekend and maybe I'll become addicted and forget all about the campaign.

On the 360, maybe, but there's no way that Bungie is just stopping with the whole Halo franchise. It's too big a cash cow.

Microsoft owns the rights to Halo, Bungie will never be part of a Halo game again.  MS was the publisher, Bungie just the developer.

IMO, Bungie will inevitably develop some type of multi-platform FPS at some point, but it won't have any Halo references.

And of course, MS will make another Halo too... it just remains to be seen how good it'll actually be.

    Yeah.

And also, before the final mission, you get a nice little goodbye note from Bungie.
  • I would imagine if Bungie ever did come out with another game it would be a Marathon game as they have a similar story and could have close to the same gameplay. As far as campaign, Halo has been the only FPS I have bought for the multiplayer and not the campaign. It is fun finding all the easter eggs they hide in the game tho. Most companies seem to think tedious collectables to get easter eggs are fun. Halo just puts them in there and hides them so when you search them out you are rewarded. Also some of the eggs are damn near impossible to find and you need the internet to find it (i.e. IWHBYD skull in Halo 2+3)
  • Firefight is crazy fun.

Oh, well, that shows what I know about MS/Bungie. Thanks for the link.

Halo 2 was awful to me, maps sucked hated duel wielding, very glitchy,
ton of lag, single player was not very good and on and on. Halo 3 once
again didn't like it, physics sucked to floaty, they kept duel wielding,
maps were not good at all, took forever to find a game and connect no
matter who was online, you could use turbo controllers which i've been
told they've been disabled, weapons were not balanced etc...

    Halo
reach to me is basically Halo 1 fully realized for 2010, the physics
are perfect, they got rid of duel wielding which imo killed the game to
me, so far the maps have been amazing, connects very quickly, amazing
rankings and upgrading system, everything feels really balanced. The
past halos felt like who ever had the best weapon combo  would win, this
game feels way more skill based where the best player wins not whoever
gets the best combo. And the graphics are amazing, biggest leap in the
series since the first halo. This game is worth every penny.

Here is the original message before he edited.

  • I got to say this game is pretty great. I'm now starting mission 7 on Legendary. My god is it hard by yourself, but I am not going to let that 150 point achievement slip by me!
  • I bought the first Halo a couple of months back at Value Village for 5 bucks. I appreciate the merits of the series, but haven't gotten into it, because I'm not really an online gamer. Reach, however, for the first time, inspired a twinge of temptation in me, so who knows?
  • I just picked up Halo 3 sealed for 20 bucks, figured i would give it a shot and if i like it i will probably get reach. i've never played a Halo game, the series just never caught my interest.

That statement is a little confusing. The original Halo isn't an online game (Not without a bit of modding, anyway). While it popularized multiplayer in the series in general, I believe it was also initially highly regarded for its single player campaign, something many feel is lacking in the later games.

THIS is what I HATE about the Halo series.

Their campaigns SUCK. (Though I have yet to play ODST and Reach campaigns.) Halo campaigns reuse the same areas WAY to much. It gets so boring that I stop really paying attention. Which sometimes results in me getting confused. I was used to playing Goldeneye 007 and Perfect Dark. They had pretty original levels, except for Goldeneye re-using two. With Halo one run through the campaign felt like two because the areas are literally carbon copies of eachother.

I'll stick to multiplayer where random kids teabag me after getting lucky/campy kills before I play though a capaign and have the developers teabag me with their boring and repetive level design again and again.

Don't hate so hard man! Hate raises your blood pressure, which is then bad on your organs, and probably makes other people smack their wives, drive their cars off cliffs, and more. Also, it's just a game. image image

It just really gets to me when people think that boring repetition makes a game magnificent.
    coughcoughWorldOfWarcraftcoughcough
I mean, repetition is OK a little. Like in Metroid and Castlevania where you have a reason to backtrack.
But when it's done to make the game longer and not really add anything, it's dumb.
    coughcoughFarmVilleAndEveryOtherFacebookGamecoughcough
Man, I should get this cough checked out... image

I guess. It depends on how you look at it, IMO. I noticed the environments were repetitive the first time through. The the second, third, fourth and.. (god who knows how many times I went through the first game, I couldn't tell you) ..when I was really on top of what was happening (i.e., when you get familiar with it and know what's up and where to go), I didn't notice it (or really care to). At that point, everything else made it magnificent, if that's how you want to put it. Of course, to each their own. Definitely a game that grew on me over time (I didn't like it at first and thought it was over-hyped).
