Sonic 4 out for PSN now, what are your opinions?

I've been waiting for this game all day today, and finally at around 7:30 tonight, it was released.  I played, and am at the boss level of the third level.

I played for a little bit on chat, so others could see the gameplay.  I think this game is amazing!  Exactly what the Sonic fans needed to get their hopes back into the franchise.

What are your thoughts on this game?

  • Im excited to play it. I didnt realize it came out today.
  • I didn't know it came out today. I download it when I get paid on thursday.
  • I also didn't know it was released, how much is it? 15?

Nevermind, found out it was 15. Getting this hopefully tomorrow, if not then, then Friday when I get paid =D
  • I knew I was saving those MS Points for something... Thanks for the reminder on this one.
  • Id like to say its going to be awesome but sadly this one may suck big time. Who knows hopefully its kick ass
  • Pretty good, I played the demo and liked it.
  • I hope Dr. Robotnik crushes that blue whinny little bitch because his CARTOON was TERRIBLE!!!
  • ^ If they call Dr. Robotnik "Eggman" still, it would be enough of a reason to not buy the game.
  • $15?!? Sonic isn't worth that much to me, and I was even a Genesis.

GASP!! NO!!!  Hehe image  Which cartoon are you referring to?  There have been several different Sonic cartoons, but the SatAM version was Awesome!  In my opinion image
  • $15 boneskies? Fuck. I was thinking about getting Scott Pilgrim instead, Anamanaguchi did all the music for the game, and let me tell you - IT IS SWEET
  • It's out for Wii as well if you don't have a PS3 or 360.
  • Whoa, 1200 MS points? I am definitely trying out the demo on this beeyotch before buying.
  • i got it for my iphone and its not too bad. Definitely not worth 15$ though
  • I was not impressed by the demo... the controls were honestly better on the Genesis. I was really hoping for this one to be great... Sigh.
  • So the controls aren't that good? Is the stage designs poorer than the 16bit games too? I knew a couple people from another board who got early access and said it was pretty much 'more of the same' you'd expect from Sega and their string of consistency with Sonic and that saddened me as I used to love the series. Also at $15 it's a shame having no idea how many episodes are planned as it could get more costly than a retail disc in the end.
  • The one problem I have with the controls is the fact that if you accidentally hit jump while in midair, it shoots you downward at an angle and totally screws up what you were trying to do. Also, there is a lock-on system with enemies that totally takes the challenge out of the game. How to hit a baddie in this game? Push A, then push A while in midair and the baddie is instantly dead.

Also, I noticed that Sonic is able to stand on a practically vertical curve without rolling backwards... I mean, they fixed that shit in Sonic 3.

As for the level design, the one I played is very ho-hum. Just your basic standard Sonic level - it looks just like the first stage from Sonic 2. Less fun, though.
  • It feels like a revamped Sonic 3 to me. My only issue i've been having is getting used to the running. In this game, you have to actually build some momentum to start running.

    Post 2500!
  • Been playing on my iphone and ipad this last week and it's awesome!! Must buy if you loved the Genesis or still do.
  • I'm baffled that so many of the reviews for this game are so good. It seems that Joystiq is the only site that agrees with me so far.

Curious to hear what you guys think about it.
  • I did a quick poke around on it too, you're not alone in thinking it sucks. The common complaining I've seen is the lack of skill needed to jump/crash into targets. Backgrounds rendered 3D yet looking sterile, a 'stiff' Sonic 3D model, music that isn't memorable, and just not much of a challenge overall. I hate to say that I'm not surprised, so I'll still wait and read more over time to see if it's bad or not.
  • I was going to buy this one blind later tonight, but I think I'll pass. Maybe download the demo if it's available. There are other XBLA games I would rather spend $15 on (And I don't usually like spending $15 on downloadable games, period).

  • not worth 15. the spinning is a little roughly programmed (which can lag the game a bit), and isn't as fluid as the originals. i do like the button jump attack combos they used in Sonic Adventure 1 / 2. the bonus ring at the end of a map has no variety and is simple by having u controller it. i got the wii version, maybe it's better on the other consoles but i'd give it a 75 / 100 rating. i like the older games a lot better.
  • Aleckermit put up a youtube talkie mini review, seems to love it. IGn and various other sites seem to have found some old sonic 16bit fanboys to write up and there seems to be a number of people in love with the game...damnit I'm conflicted. $15 is steep for a download in my eyes, but if this actually if you can get past purist syndrome over the hit a again to kill in mid air gimme, it seems to be perhaps worthy.

    What the hell eh?

By the way do we know if the SD(Wii) version handles better/worse than the PS3(HD) version?

Not too sure.  I have it for my PS3 only, so i'm not gonna bother getting it for my Wii also.
  • I wouldn't either just was curious. The Wii I don't buy downloads for after I found out you have no rights to them unlike the PS3 where paid for games are transferable. I put the demo on my ps3, just have to try it out I suppose.
  • I see a lot of people severely dislike the auto-targeting system, as well as the speed issues and the occasional sporadic stopping when it shouldn't be happening. Seems like Sega missed out on a great opportunity..
  • Dang, I had high hopes for this one too. The auto-targeting sounds like complete BS. If my PS3 wasn't broken, I'd download a demo... but aaaarrgh! Stupid broken PS3.

So, the Wii version is SD and not widescreen? That also sucks.
  • I downloaded the demo and unless the first stage runs flawlessly and the rest of the game is shit, the only valid complaint I see is the personal taste of hating on or loving the auto targeting attack as you're jumping. The flow of it feels pretty smooth, speeds up as it used to slow or fast with a spin dash, momentum seems good too.

Either way I'll have my Sonic fun -- I had a $20 amazon voucher about to expire so I got that DS package with all 4 classic games on it.  I know it's a weird silently dsi-enhanced title that uses the added cpu clock speed and added ram to make its framerate fine and other little issues that crop up on a normal DS don't happen either.
