Battle of Olympus

I had never played this game before until today and I've gotta say its a pretty great game I've been missing out on for years.  Kind of reminds me of a better version of Zelda 2.

If you haven't played it i would recommend picking this one up.

  • Battle of Olympus is an awesome game, but gets hard really fast. I've managed to get all the way to Hades, but have yet to beat him.

Im pretty sure you mentioned it to me yesterday?  If not somehow i had the urge to pop it in today out of nowhere.  lol.

Yep, I did mention it yesterday.  I think it was when we saw a copy of it at the game store in the $1 game case.  It's a sweet game and one that I've been playing since I was a kid.
  • I don't like this game at all. I like Zelda II, but this game just didn't do it for me.
  • Great game for sure. Hard, but beatable with some perseverance.

It seems to be directly made on the same 'engine' (I know nothing about programming language) as Zelda II. Even the title screen is similar, and the final battle is pretty much the same as well.

Have you played it all the way to the end, it's hard to say if a game is really good or not until you complete it.

    very true.
I used to hate Faxanadu when I was a kid (just did not give it enough time) but find it excellent after I gave it a new chance.

I have been meaning to get a copy of BoO for some time as a well. Looks interesting
  • I have the game, but have yet to fire it up yet.
  • I almost finished it, but after going as far as I did and not enjoying the ride when I get around to selling a control deck lot up on here it's one of the games going into the package as it just didn't like me and I don't like it.
  • Love this game, was actually trying to speedrun it earlier this year, but put that aside for some other projects. Think it could be beaten in the neighborhood of 30-35 minutes, but there's a ton of luck involved in getting a fast time. As for normal play, the game's difficult, but not too bad once you know where to go and how the enemies behave. Infinite continues and passwords help too.
  • Definitely begs for a speedrun, but I enjoy the game (and its world) so much I always spend a lot of time wandering around. Plus I get lost in Crete a lot. A LOT.
  • A very good game that IMO got lost in the shuffle. You get some really sweet items too (those boots that let you flip upside down for instance)
  • I really enjoyed this game when I beat it a few years back. All sorts of cool stuff and really good controls.
  • great music in both this and faxanadu. my band does tunes from both of these regularly.

Same here. I have met him many times but I always fail to defaet him. If I understood things correctly, there is some kind of potion I am supposed to get somewhere but I dont have it. Maybe it is used for filling up the lost lifebars during battle but I have not found it yet. Sure was a long time since I played the game now but I must complete it so I can move on to another game

I also made maps for Crete, Peloponnesus, Phrygia and the kingdom of Hades since these worlds were hard to navigate through

You might be thinking of the Trojan Pitcher, which you get in Laconia.  There's a specific pillar you have to hit and then the pitcher falls from the sky.  I think you can use it like a potion, if I remember correctly.  You can fill it up at a fountain in Attica.  You basically need the Moon Crystal if you want to beat Hades since he is invisible for half the fight.  If you have it, it will cast his shadow on the floor so you can see where he is.  I've never been able to get past this part because I find it visually confusing to attack Hades since you're looking at an upsidedown image of him during the first half of the fight.  I always attack too early and miss, or get attack by him.
  • Well I shall try that. But if I remember right you are falling down when entering the Kingdom of Hades so how do I get upp from there without starting all over?

Once you enter Tartarus (Hades' Kingdom), you can't go back.  There isn't any way to go back, which sucks because if you miss getting an item, then you have to go on without it.  If you have a password from right before you entered Tartarus, I would enter that on the password screen and then go back and get any items you might be missing.  It will make the fight against Hades much easier.
  • Might pop this baby in for another chance once I have my NES hooked up again and I have a few hours to kill.
  • I just had a look and it seems like I ve lost the password I used for Tartarus so I used another one that brought me to the beginning of the game with only the Trojan Pitcher and the 3rd heart missing so I just took them both and now I will be ready for the final battle with Hades. Lucky am I to have drawn the maps for tartarus so that I just can walk straight through.

Only question is where I can refill the potion once it is depleeted? I will save a password to the overworld before going to Tartarus just in case I'm shit out of luck
  • 4 year old speed run of this game:

The fountain just in front of Athena's Temple in Attica will refill the pitcher.  There might be a couple other founatins, but I can't recall if there are or where they could be.

Very nice speedrun, albeit a TAS.

The fastest one should be on tasvideos.org. Worth checking out.

Yep, tasvideos.org is where I found it.  Pretty much THE site if you have any interest in tool assisted speedruns.
  • You don't strictly need the moon pearl for Hades, even in real time (though it is incredibly helpful).  I made a video a while back of how I intended to handle the end game for the speedrun I mentioned working on earlier.  It is emulated, but doesn't use any of the emulator perks outside of the starting save state.

The trick behind this method is knowing how he behaves.  If you stand still and duck he won't run into you, just run up to you and start stabbing.  If you stab back while he's stabbing at you he'll jump away.  Do this a few times and you'll get him up against the wall.  Once you get him backed into the corner position is very important.  Too close and he'll jump into you (as seen the first time I get to the wall), too far away you won't hit him.  It's very precise, the difference between too close and too far is only a handful of pixels, but once you get it it works like a charm.  If you have the moon pearl it gets even easier with this method as you can time the hits instead of just mashing.

I'll have to give this strategy a try next time I get to Hades.  It sounds very helpful and I should be able to beat this game once and for all with it.

  • I'm currently playing this game so I can get a real impression on it. It's a great game, how on Earth did I not like it? Well, I've only played it previously for about 15 minutes. I'm not that far in, but I would give it two thumbs up, since I now have a real opinion.

Well I refilled it in a fountain in the castel of Crete så if there is such a spring somewhere in Tartarus I will reload there. Shall take a look on the map over Tartarus as I think it might be marked

    That
reminds me of the way to beat the shadow in Zelda 2. Will try that as I
have all the items so I can see Hades during the battle =)

Perhaps I should upload my maps here for the tricky stages in the game. They sure come in handy when you need to get through those parts quickly and certainly

I just looked at some maps I have on the game and there are fountains in Laconia, Phrygia, and Phthia.  My map doesn't show a fountain in Tartarus, but it does show a room with a Nymph that will restore your health.
  • Oh yees... I remember the nymph... That was the room before the courtyard where Hades is located? Perhaps I will have to insert the password everytime I die or just play until I am sure I will win and still has low energy left in the lifebars... Then I reload with water
