The new issue:
A 25th Anniversary issue of Mario. The cover has an advent calender design and behind each tab is a game Mario has been in for the past 25 years. Like I said it is pricey but there was a coupon code floating around to drop the price dramatically for the states.
Hogieman,
Great shot of the RG Mag. It is a really spectacular cover this month and the 25 tabs are something that I have never seen any other magazine do before. Retro Gamer has been known to really push the envelope on their covers, I remember their Final Fantasy cover had a hologrphic presentation that amazed me when I put it up the light. I do also feel that their rather costly price is worth it for the full color professional content and exceptional writing. Plus, they don't have a lot of competition really here in the states.
I've thumbed a couple of those Retro Gamer magazines before and they're pretty slick, just steeply priced is all ($80/yr sub or $10 a piece on the rack.) Shame all the retro mags in this country are of such checkered quality and tend to be not every month either.
Tanooki, I agree that the other magazines in the US do not carry the high level of professionalism that RG brings to the table. But this may be due to the amount of money that RG has to spend on their Mag, plus their established subscriber base. I think the other magazines have a difficult time getting off the ground and finding subscribers. They normally do not have the money to invest in building up readers before the sales start to pick up to the point where revenue exceeds or even meets the costs of printing, not to mention the time it takes to work on a magazine. It would be nice to one day have an American Retro Gaming Magazine that really caters to the American systems (NES, SNES, Genesis) that is professionally done like RG and is published on a monthly basis. RG covers the aforementioned systems to a certain extent, but they also cover a lot of the computer systems that were very popular in the UK udring the 80's and early 90's, which most never really hit the US shores.
Yup I've seen what they cover, and if there was a US one that just covered a fair bit of what existed here in the 80s and 90s around most the size of what that UK mag does I'd buy it. If you can't afford publishing, fine I get that, then do it like the NA e-zine and charge like $2-5 or something for it. With that and some strong hint/ad dropping around to sites of a theme like this and more you could build a base to where print could be possible.
Tanooki,
That's a great idea on how to establish a reader base. It makes me wonder if Nintendo Age would ever think about giving the option of a print issue to members for a small fee.
I made some slight updates to the list. One of the most notable can be found under Video Game Collector magazine. I am recommending people who are interested in obtaining copies of the magazine to NOT purchase them from the magazine's homepage since there have been instances of people paying for issues and never receiving them. If you are interested in purchasing issues of that magazine please do so at Good Deal Games. Thank you.
The quality is well worth the $10.
I'd love a copy of the new issue but no one around here sells the damn thing :-(
If you wish to purchase the new issue directly you can do so at the Imagine Publishing Website and pay via Pay Pal at this link: https://www.imagineshop.co.uk/magazines/retrogamer/retro-gamer-issue-82.html. Just click the add to cart button and then go through their check out process.
I also found out the coupon code for Retro Gamer. If you want a subscription enter in the word:
"CLASSIC"
at the promotional code box at the following url:
https://imagine.subscribeonline.co.uk/all-titles/retro-gamer
It drops the price to $6 an issue instead of 10 at Barnes and Noble. The subscription is also for 13 issues, not 12.
Edit: Nevermind, found it so take a peek: https://www.imagineshop.co.uk/bookazines/videogames-and-retro/gamestm/retro-volume-3.html
GamesTM another UK mag I found out does a retro gaming magazine as well, cost $20 at Borders when I was there a few days ago but it was over 200pages too, so it was thick and of a larger size. The coverage in it simply was amazing, liked it more than the other Retro Gamer Magazine. It's not monthly though, I think it's quarterly or something. GamesTM stupid website though I can't find a reference to it.

You should checkout the Retro Gamer Collection mag. Its like 275 pages and is pretty sweet. I think they come out every few months or something. I snagged volume 4 this month. Has a lot of good articles in it.
I currently subscribe to Retro Gamer. It is costly but the quality is worth it. The paper used is heavy and they ship each copy in a nice blue bag. The magazine is over sized and full of great content.

what's pricey? it's the same price as any other issue. 5 lbs is euros, whatever that exchanges to in u.s.
