What to do in Zelda II when you run out of keys?
I think I screwed myself in Zelda II. In the second and third Palaces, I seem to have run out of keys. At first in the swamp palace, I was like, "OK, there's an item I'm missing" (Primarily the gloves, because of the blocks keeping me from progressing, that I am supposed to smash). I say whatever, it's all good, I'll just keep playing.. So I get the hammer, grab the medicine, get the fairy spell, and go through the island palace.. But now I'm having the same problem there--I ran out of keys, and the smashable blocks (which I can't smash because the gloves in the second palace are blocked because I don't have a key) are blocking my way. I re-ran through every single room in this palace, and the swamp palace, just to make sure I didn't miss something. Sure enough though, I didn't--No keys in sight, anywhere. Period. And I have zero. Is starting a new game the only thing I can do? :X
(Also, isn't there a way to re-enter completed palaces? I doubt the keys respawn, but I thought I would try that on the first palace).

To your comfort there will be a big key in the end of the game that opens every door and once you got it, you dont need the small ones any more and that saves the effort in finding them
Try to search the palaces again and if not finding any key you will have to start from the beginning again
Not sure if you've tried this yet, but you can use the Fairy spell and fly through the keyholes. The only problem you would have then is having enough magic points.
Good point Sir, however items in that game are often at dead ends. You can bypass locked doors to get through areas that are locked, you just have to leave the screen beyond the door you slip through as the fairy to return to normal form. In fairy mode you can not fly and touch a main palace item and collect it.

Really?
pop that joke out and pop in Zelda 1 like a man.

Lol, likewise.. Love the first game, but the second one does it for me more. I'm also playing it on the GBA via the Classic NES Series release, so no-can-do as far as the first game.

Of all the times I played this game as a kid and young adult, I never knew you could do this. I think this should solve my problem, because since I've spent way more time than usual wondering around the world, lost as to what to do because of this, I have leveled up more than I probably normally would by this point in the game. I should have enough magic to zip in with the fairy, then to use it again to zip back out the door.
I'm
pretty sure that the game was designed so you couldn't mess up like
this. I'm almost positive that you are just missing a key somewhere in
one of the two levels.
I will try to search for it again just for shits 'n giggles, but I'm pretty sure I've scoured both palaces three or four times each. In hindsight, I now realize I should have used the keys from the third palace to unlock the last door in the second palace. The problem now is that all of the available keys are blocked by stones, which I can't smash because I probably mis-used my keys. Whoops.
You may of infact screwed yourselves like a philip's head. In Zelda II if keys are missed and a palace is sealed, you will have to start over if you don't take careful considerations into using keys in palaces they were created for. I had to learn the lesson the hard way as I once got in the same predicament you are in. I sealed my fate with a key that was missed early on, and no option exists to purchase one at the local Adventure of Link Home Depot sorry.
At least you could in the original Legend of Zelda (buy keys for 80 rupees). Perhaps this is why from Link to the Past onward, you're only allowed to use keys in the dungeon you find them in?
And I'm pretty sure I've beaten the boss, hit the crystal, and left the palace before getting that palace's item without the palace turning to stone.
edit; Some do like this: They save their crystals until they finished all the palaces and then they head back for each one and level up to get an extra life and do so before they take on the final palace. However the final palace is easy at the point that all you got to do is haeding for the boss and there is no need to look for items or keys if you got the big one
Here is a map of the final palace. You walk in this order and you find the end of the game. The picture got to dark when beeing rotated. The right side is the top and the left side is the bottom
Question, though--How the hell is it possible to get to the boss in the second palace without having the glove? The only way (that I know of) to access the next section of the palace (which eventually leads to the boss) is blocked by breakable stones that require the gloves.

Hey! I like it better than the first one too. Those are fightin' words, bub!
That map is amazing, lol
It was made the first time I beat the game. It does not looks like the palace but if you follow the directions you see on the map you will get to the boss.
the spot on the corridor that is marked // indicates that the map continues on the left side on the paper since with did not have any bigger paper to draw on. The rest is explained by the arrows
