Which cartridges do you think look better?

NES, SNES, or N64?

For me, it's a tie between SNES and N64. I really can't say.

  • I like the look of the SNES cart because at least they have a top label, and the look of it's pretty cool as it looks a perfect rectangle.
  • for me its snes because n64 has no top labels and that drives me bonkers
  • NES looks better. I don't know why, probably that ladder thing going on at the side. I also like that they're bigger, so they're slightly harder to lose and there's also more room for cover art, which there is a lot of good ones of. I don't like N64 simply because of the lack of end labels, and SNES is good, but the gimmick of EVERY. LAST. GAME. having that black border around it is both good and bad. It's good because it reminds me of the "black box" games, but it's bad because there's no real variation, every game looks slightly similar from a thousand feet away.
  • NES for me, followed closely by SNES, with N64 far behind. My N64 games look like crap because I had to make my own labels.
  • NES, SNES, N64 for me.
  • I guess the NES/Famicom design since you can see what game you have from top and front, but in actual design I liked the N64 cart shape, sturdiness and label size the best. The SNES while having that front/top label they were really flimsy cheap plastic easy to crack and a bitch/aggravation to clean due to all the grooves and slits in the plastic.
  • NES has the Best looking carts No question.

Totally agree with you Cody. I enjoy the look and design. They look amazing stacked on a shelf and there's some room for the artwork to shine. You can't go wrong with a nes cart, totally classic.

I know the OP didn't post about it but I love the look of the genesis carts more than the snes for the opposite reason. I look the sleek black design, I always thought that the genny carts were ahead of their time in terms of general design. Plus, some of the label artwork is fucking legendary.

  • I agree with both Joey and Cody, the NES cart is great for a few reasons. The room for cover art, the look on the shelf, and the fact that you get the odd gold cart thrown in for fun.

If they made SNES carts the same as Super Famicom I would vote SNES. I really do like the look of the Super Famicom cart, don't know why, just sleek looking. No end labels though, so issues there.
  • I think the look of Famicom carts is way better than that of the NES. I love how they can match the label and cart color which looks great.
  • I prefer nes but snes is close, i like the look of n64 carts but no end labels ruin it for me.
  • I like snes better. The NES is ok but N64..........IT sucks.

I like Genesis carts (especially Accolade ones to a degree), because while there is good cover art, it's kind of confusing to look at some of the covers of earlier games (usually ones made by Sega) because all you see is cover art. You gotta look at the end label to see the title. Thankfully, the red Genesis logo on all future games made this easier to stomach, but this made all future Genesis games look similar from a distance. Also, they feel really lightweight and cheap to me, but thankfully, they're pretty sturdy, I've dropped my NBA Jam Tournament Edition about 10 feet, and even though it hit something hard, it was still minty. The packaging of games is awesome. Just awesome. Clamshell cases that open and close real easily, manual slides in nice and firm so you don't worry about losing it. The later cardboard ones were kind of dumb though.

My favorite cover art for any Genesis game has to be the original Streets of Rage.

  • ^ Agreed, Sega should have never went to cardboard boxes for their Genesis games. The hard cases were great, probably the best packaging I can think of for any console's games.
  • Even though I'm a die hard snes fan, I have to say nes carts.

The main reason is a HUGE portion of snes carts are discolored, even if you don't notice it. Holding carts next to a truly non discolored cart, or looking at them under sunlight reveals the awful truth.
  • On an unrelated note: why did NES carts were made way bigger than the Famicom ones? Such a waste of plastic! Though Famicom carts lool cheaper...

The objective was to make NES stuff look like hi-fi AV equipment and less like video games.
  • NES>N64>>>SNES Don't know why, I just don't like the SNES cart design.

I agree as well, but why did they have to use such shitty labels? I dont think I own a single Genesis cart that the label that doesnt look like it survived a nuclear attack. Id say that at least half of my NES labels look dead mint, and thats out of about 400 carts.

The only other consoles I can think of that used the same style packaging (clamshell) were the Odyssey 2, Master System, and the Neo Geo AES. It is a great way to package games, and thankfully it has evolved into current-gen packaging for video games.

The one problem I have with Genesis packaging though, is that it takes up a little more space than needed. The cart is only so big!
  • If you could read 64 labels from the end like all the rest, they'd be the best. They've got a great shape. NES carts are also fantastic. Never been a fan of the SNES stuff, though...
  • Definitely NES, gotta love the extra room for cover art. I like N64 the least, by far.
  • cart only? nes -> snes -> n64

both nes and snes display well on their own, but nes seems to be more simplistic to me. n64 just sucks because they don't have outer labels to read the games.
  • I was just thinking the other day how much I enjoy looking at a stack of NES carts. SNES is fine too but the NES just looks great. Not for any particular reason. The N64 needed end labels.
  • NES / SNES are basically the same IMO, don't see how any one design can be any better than the other.

Even as a N64 collector, I agree the N64 labels suck ass. No top labels and no glossy labels either (don't think anyone mentioned that yet). You can remove stickers / marker from most licensed NES / SNES labels due to their glossiness, but N64 labels will rip right apart, or lose their color.
  • I like the NES cartridges best along with the US SNES cartridges. I don't like the EU SNES and N64 cartridges because they don't have top labels.

Pretty much exactly the same response from me!
  • SNES because of the awesome top label!
