Odd version of Pokémon Silver

Hi!
I came across this odd version of Pokémon Silver some years ago. It's missing the front of the cartridge, so I've never seen the label. The back is black and not silver like it should. The title screen is different and the game have a lot of weird/poor translation. Like Prof. Elm is called UTSUGi. A lot of weird (possible asian symbols?) appear in the text sometimes too.

Also noticed that it's not GameFreak either on the startup screen, but someone called VidaTranslations.

Could this be an asian bootleg?

    It looks like a hack. I did some searching around and was able to find Vida Translations and someone named Phil Reuben. A few forum post had said they translated the game from Japanese to English. Here are some of the quotes I found.



    "The first community I joined was based on translating the Pokémon Silver / Gold ROM from Japanese to English back in 1999. The project was being run by Phil Reuben. It was running a UBB if I remember correctly. "
    This quote is form an interview Scott MacVicar did. He had a blog that
    was last updated Dec 09. His facebook http://www.facebook.com/macvicar. See if he knows anything more.


    "I got into it after finding Phil Reuben (he's the only one on facebook) and Vida's translations of gold and silver."


    Also a post saying that a 98% translated version of silver was hosted on vidatranslations.cjb.net. The website is no longer up and running. If you were to believe that second quote I guess this Phil guy has a facebook. So you might be able to just message every Phil Reuben there and see if anyone responds.

    A hack? Interesting... I do know that the person I got it from have an uncle or something that used to travel to Thailand a lot. That place floods with pirated stuff.



    I'll have a look at that at Pokémon bootleg link and those facebook profiles. Would be cool if I managed to find more information about this bootleg. Thanks!
