Kinect launch tonight!

I pre-ordered it the first day it was available at the Microsoft store by my house and they gave me a VIP ticket to come to the launch party they are having. Should be fun!

  • Yeah, I don't think it is going to sell as well as Microsoft wants. If it were not for my brothers splitting the cost with me I wouldn't be as interested.
  • I actually though kinect looked better at E3 than people claimed. I mean, motion controls really don't do anything for me but as far as they go Kinect looks pretty appealing.

    It's so bad.
  • Nope, my opinion Microsoft sucks, and has to join to motion control war like Sony so they can compete with the Wii.
  • I'm still debating.
  • I already have a Wii.
  • Take a look on top of my tv in this vid.

It works better than the power glove.
  • I am completly uninterested.

Same, Kinect looks really lame and from what i've heard if you just look at the thing funny it doesn't work. Move looks atleast decent but i don't have enough interest in motion controls to pick that up either, after the 360 i will never buy Microsoft hardware again at launch.
  • Not going to buy it till it hits around $20 and then I'll contemplate it... if I wanted a Wii I would have bought one of those.. I don't see why everyone is trying to mimick the success of motion control of the Wii 2 years too late
  • I've ordered mine along with Dance Central (for my gf obviously cough cough) and Fighters Uncaged (which looks lame but anyhows)... needs some decent games...
  • ...also ordered Black Ops so maybe that will be getting most of my attention...
  • I say it does pretty well based on what I've been seeing online lately.

Oddly enough, it looks like they're marketing this towards women. With lengthy spots on both Oprah and Ellen where they demonstrated it and gave them away, I think they're trying to tackle a new demographic...which is a great move on their part.

The 360 already has the hardcore gamer in their pocket, but they dont have the casual gamers. Kinect is going to make the Wii Fit balance board look like a piece of shit. EA Active without any stupid accessories, the rhythm dance games, etc...

Sounds like a glorified workout device, which I think is what they're initially going after. I think it will do outstanding as a workout companion. The camera controls are perfect for that.

The Playstation Move on the other hand, is trying to target the hardcore gamers with a silly set of peripherals. I think that will ultimately fail.

I'm not super excited about Kinect, but i'll probably buy it, and I think Microsoft is actually on target with their demographic.
  • I call it xbroke for a reason....
  • I really don't expect this or the Move to do very well. There might be some initial excitement, but gaming without controls is completely unappealing to many people, including myself and I've yet to see a single game for either of that will get people buying.

Plus, think of all the pissed off parents that end up not letting the kids play it because their jumping up and down is way too loud.
  • Most parents who know anything about motion controls already associate Nintendo's Wii as the standard anyway. If it's about getting the parents into the game, why spend $200 to buy an accessory for a console that you'll have to share with your acne-ridden, furiously masturbating, Halo-playing son?

Just buy a goddamn Wii and hook it up in the bedroom. And guess what? You get 2 games with it.

This whole things isn't about trying to give people a new way to play. It's about Microsoft desperately trying to cling onto some of Nintendo's market share. They don't even care if it works.

    Like I said, accessories suck.

Why buy a Wii and go through the hassle of all the accessories when you can get better tracking and actual movement recognition with just your body, with Kinect?

The motion controls for all 3 systems are gimmicky, and are not appealing to "hardcore" gamers. I dont want to play Zelda and wave my arms around. Give me a controller for that shit.

Motion, Dance, and Exercise games should be so much better using your body and nothing else. Thats why I think Microsoft is on target with their advertising and demographic and Playstation Move is not.

Only time will tell, but if Kinect plays like the reviewers are saying, it should blow the Wii out of the water in some of the motion categories.

Problem is, that doesn't matter. Nintendo's already established the brand-recognition, and most people already own Wiis that are interested in that kind of thing.

What "hassle" are you talking about? My girlfriend just bought a new Wii 2 weeks ago from Best Buy and it came with WiiMote/Motion Plus, Nunchuk, and 2 games. For $199.

If you want to talk about nickel and diming, Microsoft is by far the worst of the bunch.

The hassle i'm talking about is when you try to play a game, you have to dig out and hook up a bunch of accessories.

Have you ever played EA Active or Wii Fit? It becomes annoying when you have to move the balance board, hook up the nunchuck, unhook the nunchuck, etc, for every 1 minute mini game.

Nintendo already established the brand recognition? So you're saying Sony and Microsoft dont have any brand recognition?

I dont want to talk about nickel and diming, that has nothing to do with anything.

My point is that Microsoft seems to be taking the correct marketing approach as opposed to Sony's. I also think that Kinect's motion controls will do wonders for the people who are looking to these devices as a means to exercise.
  • Personally I have no 360, I just can't invest in shoddy hardware, plus the games that are unique don't do it for me. But, having learned much of this in development from my brother a producer at THQ who backs it, there's nothing there that sucks me in. He feels the same way and he's more in love with his 360 than the PS3. The idea of coming home to bound around in front of a TV after a 40hr workweek doesn't hit me well, but that's minor compared to the fact there's no tactile reaction so it will never be able to compete on a level of Move and Wii Motion Plus, it's more of a super pepped up smarter AI backed EyeToy essentially. Kinect I know can have issues in various lighting situations far more than Wii and PS3 will on their toys, also it can get fairly stupid at times with certain colors or patterns of colors people could wear. Also it can and will lose tracking fidelty if someone moves near by or partly crosses your path and the camera can't detect if it's the same target or not so it can just screw you mid-game. PS3 has the same issues too, as does Wii, with motion and blockage, and PS3 a bit more as its cam can get dumb too, but not quite as bad as the kinect one.

They're great ideas, they'll be able to re-launch both systems as new toys to the market breathing a few added years of life into them when they have to due to as shit economy no one is going to want to drop $300-500 on a new system in so it's nice they exist. Some surely will bite, can't say long term if more will bite on Kinect or Move, perhaps Kinect because it's cheaper vs all those parts Sony has you get, but Sony go the edge of 4 years of Wii development with a controller so it won't have the same kinks and learning curve of sorts to work out.

Get a wireless nunchuk, suddenly EA Active isn't a problem.  I kept hitting myself in the face with the cord until I did  image  EA Active 2 looks like it uses arm straps instead of holding anything.

And if moving a balance board while you are exercising is a hard job, you may have other physical problems...

Except Kinect can't do any of the weight/balance measurements that the Wii board does.  Much of Wii Fit is not possible with it.

If it works it will be nice, but not a big leap over what the Wii has done for a while.

Stop being difficult. You know what I meant. Nintendo has the mainstream association with "motion controls" by default at this point.

I also had a hard time with hitting myself with the cord on EA Active. I also hated switching out the resistance bands every other activity. All in all, it was a good workout game, but I got frustrated with all the equipment toggling and finally put it to rest.

Dont get me wrong, the balance board has its benefits, its not just a glorified scale. Some of the balance games are fun, but i'm talking about strictly workout type of games. I dont get a workout by playing any of the balancing games. Most of the actual cardio activity in these games makes you step off the balance board.

Snowcon3 - I understood what you meant, but there's still money to be made in the motion department, otherwise Sony and Microsoft wouldnt be spending all this time and money putting one out. The Wii was the first to the game, but being first doesnt mean you have the best product.
