Wii- Dragon's Lair Trilogy

Someone just recently posted a seriously badass 15min youtube of this game that answers the questions I had about it reviews just don't.

Anyone up for this game or am I alone in these 50cent quarter munching laser disc goodies of the 80s?  I never could do more than maybe a quarter or so of the original DL1 rooms as my memory sucks so I could never recall what buttons to do when.

This version you can get quick time event pop up buttons showing what to push and it comes now down just to timing alone (still hard.)  You can also put it in cartoon mode, watch the entire Don Bluth cartoon which is like 10-15min a piece for each.  $30 for the 3 games, all pretty cool if youre into that style or the animators work.  If I can find it I'm so grabbing it locally.

I bought it over the weekend, I have so many other versions of it too, and I keep rebuying it. From the original Laserdiscs (well, I don't have the LD for Space Ace), to Sega CD and DVD I have tons of versions of these games.

  • Hmmm RTE interface ala Shenmue? This might get me into this game...
  • Neat. I may have to snag a copy.
  • I never really seen these games before. Looks fun, I might have to pick it up.
  • I am all over it. Can't wait to pick it up, but have had other things on my plate

Correct.  I couldn't stand it, left right after when I found only FRY's had it in town so I grabbed it.

The game does use quicktime or as in Shenmue RTE type interfacing.  For those who still have godlike speed and memory of the old trio you can shut it off.  Default on puts the icons toward the part of the screen you need to press the button (up is up, down is down, bottom right corner is your attack and so on.)  You can switch it to bottom with a cheezy representation of the + pad and a button but it's less helpful.  You can also change the dipswitches the arcade had for the volume on the music and sfx from off up to 5.  There's various difficulty modes from easy to hard depending which it is (DL2 has no switch, it's just hard with long sequences) and some games (DL1) have a home or arcade mode and others will allow for never put into arcade scenes home versions had.  Also on those dipswitches you can set the old lives counter from 3 to 5, but also infinite is on there if (like me) you have absolutely terrible short term memory so you can at least have a chance to play it out.  Oh, and I think I said it before, but there's MOVIE MODE where you can watch all three games played out like full blown cartoons which is awesome.
  • I finally had an opportunity to sit and play this at length. It's easily the best home port of Dragon's Lair ever. For a few reasons, first off, the video quality is flawless. No pixelation or chunkiness. Secondly, there's no delay between moves which the DVD and Blu-Ray version suffered from. You can use a real game controller unlike the CD-ROM releases, and there's a fair degree of customization.

I played Space Ace for a bit after finishing Dragon's Lair 1, it seemed to be perfect. I haven't tried Dragon's Lair 2 on the disc yet.
  • i didnt kno wii came out with a dragons lair woooooooooooooo i want it
  • Yeah man, I'm with ya. Totally snagging this over the weekend.
  • Ah Dragon's Lair. The only good game you could ever play on a DVD player. I'm definitely picking this up.

You could play a lot of other games, Shadoan, Mad Dog McCree, but yeah, you're pretty much limited to old laserdisc games or copies of the style.
  • Is it me or is Dragon's Lair 2 the nastiest of the bunch? Space Ace I know is downright sadist, but at least it has more breakpoints if you fail. Dragon's Lair 2 makes you go through an entire sequence of time if you screw up. Some I've noticed got to be at least like 20-30moves such as Alice in Wonderland or that weird biblical one afterwards. I stopped on that one as I kept goofing up the last part with the snakes and that had to be at least 20 presses to get to there.

Oh yeah I know. Dragon's Lair has just always been my favorite.

I felt that way in the arcade, I never got past the Garden of eden, I kept dying in the same spots over and over and over. And wasting tokens because I would make the same 2 or 3 mistakes and if I got as far as I had prior I'd get forward one move at most. I need to replay it again (maybe this evening after I beat Space Ace) to confirm. But as a kid the arcade version of DL II was brutal.
  • Oh it's brutal, some presses have leeway, a select few in shitty spots need it within like a 1/2 second and fast, but that's same with the first one too. But the problem is with the sequel the long runs and dire consequences. It's sweet having God of War 3 type button presses on the outside to 'think' like you should for the motions but that doesn't help on fast timing.

Well, I've always found DL and Space ace as a series to be harder than other LD style games, like Time Gal, Road Avenger/Road Prosecuter/Road Blaster, Strahl/Triad Stone, Revenge of the Ninja etc. The timing is far more particular in the DL games than most other LD games. But the upside is the animation is also light years better!
  • I can agree with that completely as I used to mess with one on the CDI that was 'Escape from Cyber City' which was based on the anime Galaxy Express 999 and it was fantastic, just a little less timing pissy. But as you said, the animation makes it, and that's Don Bluth for you. If Disney wasn't so cutthroat back in that era I bet his studio wouldn't have been run out of business with boxoffice shenanigans as his work (as an ex-disney animator) is fantastic. I recently got Titan AE from a Goodwill for $3 and it's fantastic. I should get his other movies he did like that original Land Before Time and those Feivel movies.

The shame is the DL and SA cartoons still have never been released on DVD or anything, you can get crappy VHS copies streamed on some gray area websites, but that sucks.

I'm a huge Don Bluth fan, he actually only did the Original Fievel movie (An American Tail, the sequel was not his).

Also, he used to work for Disney. The problems with the studio weren't necessarily due to competiton. But due to poor marketing and lack of budget support from the studios that financed his movies after 1989. That's why in the 90s he really tapered off after a string of hits with An American Tail, The Land Before Time and All Dogs go to Heaven.

After that it was Rock A Doodle, Thumbelina, Pebble and the Penguin and a Troll in Central Park before leaving Warner to do Anastasia, Bartok and Titan.

Added in edit: Those DL and SA cartoons were done by Ruby Spears and suck!
  • Yeah me too I was having a block on what he did vs his studio and as I said in mine knew he was w/disney. I didn't know the American Tail 2 wasn't him, but I do remember I think he only did the first Land Before Time, and yeah All Dogs Go To Heaven I forgot entirely and Rock a Doodle as well. Now I never heard of or seen Thumbelina, Pebble and troll, but I did see Anastasia which was great and Bartok I also never heard of so I got to look into these. My memory serves me well enough to recall Disney was dropping their movies out right along side of the Bluth stuff every time it appeared and of course got his ass crushed which bugged me even when I was younger.

We also both forgot the ever epic Secret of Nimh.

I know it was ruby/spears on those toons, and yeah they lack some of that bluth magic but I remember liking them as a kid as it still was Dirk the Daring and Dexter after all, even if it was just lower brow average 80s toons.

Secet of Nihm was before Dragons Lair, so I ledt it out.

He also directed the animation in Pete's Dragon for Disney, and the Disney Christmas movie "The Small One"
