Can NA Beat Every NES Game in a Year?

  • How do we feel about using passwords on Golf Grand Slam? Since you can password after each hole, it sort of allows you to custom make a round, resetting each hole if you don't like the outcome. Essentially it is a built-in save state. Personally, I think it is cheating. A round is a round and you do it all in one shot.

I'm not sure what genius put a password in a single round golf game...

  • well done, I was working on this yesterday, but could not beat the skeletal dragon on level 3. Now, are you good enough to do the second quest and get the "special" ending?

I've got you marked down for Ghostbusters, New Ghostbusters 2, and Baby Boomer.  The rest were knocked off already, except Dream Penguin Adventure, which I have no idea what game you're referring to with that.

Stan, I am of the opinion that since passwords are in the game, no matter how stupid it seems to have them there, then they are perfectly legal.  I would just say not to abuse it; that is, use them to save your game, but don't re-enter them just to improve your score.  Realistically though, we're on the honor system here.  As such, it's kind of difficult to enforce any sort of ruling anyway.

Also, I had a bit of a thought in regards to next year's version.  Since I was using this partly to spur people into playing through games they might not otherwise play (and possibly discover new gems in the process), that it would be reasonable to cross-reference this year's list and disallow someone from claiming the same game 2 years in a row.  I think anything longer (like if I do a 2012 version) would be a) too much work, and b) would cause many people to lose interest entirely, but in a 1-year span it may be reasonable.  For example, I wouldn't be able to claim The Punisher again, as I did it this year, but could claim Swords & Serpents if I so desired.  It would also leave Wizardry II open for someone else (I am confident that I can run through it in around 5ish hours now, so it wouldn't really be fair for me to do it again anyway...RPGs being knocked off on day one, while amusing, seems a bit out of whack).  It also keeps people from running through the same games every year, and keeps some of the easier titles open for other people to claim.  It's just an idea, but I'd like to think some people have played games they hadn't even considered playing because of this, and would like to see it continue in the same way.
  • While I think it's a good idea, that would seriously limit the games I can beat.

Out of that list, I have few games that other people have beaten and very few others that weren't marked dowb yet.

And I don't plan to increase my NES game collection next year, nor start using emulators for this. image

Are you kidding me? There are two ending to this crazy game?

  • MrMiniMog, both quests are pretty much exactly the same, but the second ending has an extra line that says something like "Congratulations, this is the end of episode 1" or something. I did it long, long ago, but not since because the only real difference is a single line of text at the end...

wiz, I will NOT use the codes for Golf Grand Slam.

Also, I like the idea of being locked out of games you claimed the year before.  Will really challenge me to beat games I have not yet been able to and will allow someone else to suffer Peter Pan and the Pirates and Puss n' Boots.
  • Beat Who Framed Roger Rabbit! (as well as a few other games but, already beaten first by someone else image) Tricky game to beat, I couldn't stop punching Roger image

In my experience this game probably had the most lopsided difficulty ratio when you compare the final boss to the rest of the game.

Regardless, congratulations, you never have to play it again. I know I was happy about that when I finished it up.

Muppet Adventure is exactly the same way.  Super easy game, but the final boss is a pisser.
  • Athena was taken care of.

It's an... interesting game. I might grow found of it if I play it more.

Dream Penguin Adventure is a Translated Famicom game, soo..... won't really count for this list image
Just figure I'd throw it in

I found the muppet adventure game soooooo much of a pain in the but to play, with its lack of being a good game that I just punted on that one. The Fozzie bear stage never seemed to end.

  • Fozzie's maze and Animal in the Bumper cars goes on forever and ever. Gonzo in the spaceship is a cast iron bitch, but with enough lives you can endure it. The boss is an instant kill if you do not kill him first, and doing so is next to impossible.
  • Nightshade! Defeated, took me forever.

( I took a picture also because I was proud of myself. image )

  • Finally, a beaten game I can contribute! I just did a run of Clu Clu Land a few days ago, in which I completed the first loop of 21 levels (20 plus the first "introductory" level) and didn't kick the bucket until level 25. At that point the gold bars "flip over" when you run over them a second time, which adds an extra element of strategy... and frustration.

But yeah... in my book that counts as "completion" of the "first quest," even though the game technically loops endlessly.

Oh, and before that I got a perfect score on all nine modes of Donkey Kong Jr. Math, but I think I recall someone having already taken that game... ::checks list at start of thread::
  • What is our criteria for Palamedes? Has to be tournament mode, but how many sets?

    Game is hard as balls.
  • Rats, all that time spent on Abadox, and it was already beaten! Stealth brag it is.
  • Palamedes has two different games you can beat it with. Beat 1 player mode (20 levels, can pick any difficulty level for the same ending), or beat Tournament mode. And Johnny, I added Dream Penguin for ya on our for-fun Famicom list, but I listed it under it's Japanese name. And I modified Milon to reflect that the second quest is still available but it's considered beaten from my arbitrary ruling that it's not a different enough ending, and the game doesn't change...correct me if I'm wrong obviously, because I can always list it as yellow. Anywhore, list is up to date image
  • Far as I am concerned, Milon is beaten. Nothing really to see in the second quest. Maybe faster enemies, but that would be it.
  • BAM!  Gold Grand Slam is down!  A final, miracle eagle on Hole 18 vaulted me to the lone spot on the leader board!

    image
  • One month left...let's get rolling people! image
  • I am pretty much out of games I can beat.

I think I still have one or two from that list. I'll run through my carts tomorrow and see those cleared. image
  • I'll knuckle down and see what I can do. I may be able to take out another one. What is the criteria for Othello?

Also, when will we hear details on next year's challenge?
  • I've been realllllly busy moving my inventory to a new location... too busy to beat anything else for now. Although I have been working slowly on The Mutant Virus, although it's really hard to figure some of the rooms out. I know there is probably a quick solution to each room too, but it's not really documented well anywhere.
  • I wouldn't say quick solutions to each room, but each room has certain choke points. If you can identify and dominate those choke points early (or drop a CM) you can make shorter work of each room. Game is still a pain in the ass. I've been this close to beating it many times!
  • Man, those 20 missions in Airwolf ARE boring... image

    Anyway, it's beaten.

Now onto Ferrari Grand Prix Challenge.
  • I have beaten Terminator and Home Alone 2
  • Also beaten some Action 52 games during 2010 (dont ask) Ooze,Chill Out,French Baker,Shooting Gallery,Fuzz Power,Sombreros,Evil Empire,Crazy Shuffle,Alfredo,Critical Bypass,Star Evil,Thrusters,Lollipops,Underground,Ninja Assault,G-Force Fighter and Manchester.

I will beat some more tonight xD
  • Me and Dr. Morbis played some Mission Cobra on co-op and handily routed it. It loops after 3 levels, but I felt we had to do 6 to count it beaten since it throws a ton more enemies after level 3 is beaten. After the second loop nothing changes. I made level 18, he hit level 26, but my score was still 30K higher and we both survived past the 6th phase, so we considered it done at that point. Easy and surprisingly fun game overall.

Anyway, didn't see the updates from Elmo and Bea, so I'll update it.

Oh, and I made Bubble Bath Babes ineligable due to duplication - it's just a graphic hack of Mermaids of Atlantis, so beating either will count as Mermaids (believe Mermaids was first chronologically, although I will change that if I'm wrong...I want the older game to be the one that counts).

As for next year's list, I'm thinking I'm going to say we're ineligable to repeat our games (to keep it interesting for new people), and I'll make a stack of CIB games that shall be set aside for an end-of-the-year prize. I'll make a mix of common crap and interesting nice pieces so people at all stages of collecting can find something in it that they like. On top of that, I'll give double points when tallying the list for any games that nobody beats this year, as an incentive to knock off something completely new.

Anyway, since prizes would be in order, I may ask for donations of items for the pile, although I have a ton of dupes as it is. It's a maybe, but if people WANT to donate, they'd be welcome to. Not sure what all I'd put in the pile, but I will definitely put a mint CIB Stunt Kids in it. If I get enough, there will be multiple prizes for the top completions, but I'll worry about that later. As it sits, it'd probably be just the leader at the end of the year. Anyway, prizes are for NEXT YEAR'S competiton, not this one, as I only really ran this as a trial. It seems to have taken off, so we'll go with it next year.
