Your Favorite Genesis configuration

OK Genesis fans, we seem to have a selection of console variations that can only be rivaled by the PC Engine.

We have model  1 & 2 Genesis and CD hardware cobonations with 32x add ons, Power Base converters, Nomads, CDX's, Wondermega's, X'eye and Laser Active modules to choose from, along with wide variety of region, AV and Neptune mods to consider, and that's before we include all these new fangled 3rd party hardware options.

So what is you prefered Genesis configuration and why?

DON'T BE AFRAID TO SHOW OFF YOUR RIG!!!!!!!!!!

Mypersonal favorite is the model 1 Genesis and model 1 CD combo, looks supe sexy and imho, none of the other consoles offer the same quality of audio. It is also compatible with the Power Base, which is awesome.

Of all the many variations of the Genesis I've owned it's hands down my favorite. Here's my baby.

It's been S-vid modded and the jacks were installed on the side so they didn't et in the way of the power base. It's also region switched for those few Mega Drive games with lock out. The cart slot was also expanded and the cart flap from a Mega Drive was added so that te carts would fit right in without the slot looking odd.

  • I have the first version of the model 1 (came with the Altered beast pack in) with a model 2 CD. I have the 32x sitting on top, with a headphone to RCA jack running from front to back so I get true stereo sound.

Don't forget about the model 3!

My favorite configuration is the model 2 Genesis/32X/Sega CD. I really like the flip top lid on the model 2 Sega CD. As much as I like the model 1 combo, adding a 32X to it looks really awkward.
  • Ah, I forgot the model 3! I knew I was forgeting something!

Actually, my first Genesis / CD was the model 2 combo back in the day. I still have it stashed away. One of these days I should replace the battery in the Sega CD.
  • My primary unit that I do most of my gaming on is a model 3 in my bedroom hooked up to a big CRT. I have an X'Eye in my living room on an LCD for any of my CD needs.

I have my personal ultimate set up on the way to me right now:

    Model 3 Genesis with:

    32X Compatibility

    SMS Converter Compatibility

    Game Genie Compatibility

    Virtua Racing Fix

    Region Switch

    S-Video Mod

    Standard AV Inputs

    Crystal Clear Audio Mod

Power LED (I think green or yellow)

AC input moved to the back of the unit

I'm pumped, it's pretty much my dream set up. I could care less about 32x and Virtua Racing, and I can still use my X'Eye for CD stuff.

You are killing it with the sick finds lately!
  • I have a model 1 for the power base converter, and I have my model 2 Genesis attached to my model 2 Sega CD. However the best overall setup is probably model 1 Genesis with model 1 CD, and then you can swap 32x and Power Base converter as needed.
  • Model 2 Genny all the way. Looks super sexy.
  • I Perfer genesis model one,Sega cd model 1, and power converter. To me looks cool.
  • I have a Genesis model 2, Sega CD model 2, and 32X all hooked up together with stereo audio video cables. The sound isn't quite as good as the early model 1's, but it still sounds good and the picture quality is wonderful.

Same here, but mine is pretty much for display. I really love how it all looks as an assembly. Its very visually appealing to look at!
  • But as a stand alone console, I love the model 1. Models 2 and 3 just lack the same appeal to me (though I still have them as well image )

Edit: Im gonna have to see if the 32x will fit on the model 3! That would look strange!
  • This is my Genesis config

Didn't even know this existed until today. How rare are those babies? Are they expensive? I know the original converters aren't too common, but they are rather cheap.

    Oops!

I should have been more clear, I bought the modded Genny 3 seen in the video, not any of the SMS converters image

The SMS Converter II is pretty uncommon and doesn't support Card games.  I runs maybe $70-$100 on average.  It was only released in Europe, but works on any region model 1 or 2 Genesis, and a modified Genesis 3 or X'Eye.

I'm going to grab one of these Tototek converters soon:  http://cgi.ebay.com/Master-System-MarkIII-Converter-Genesis-MegaDrive-/110605546749?pt=US_Vintage_Video_Games&hash=item19c09ab4fd

They're not the prettiest things I've ever seen, but it has Mark III compatibility as well.  Matt has a complete CIB US Master System set, so it would be nice to have access to basically the full library (less the card games) without having to have my SMS plugged in all the time.

  • 2nd gen system, with side mount CD, and of course 32X on top. That's the way I had it as a kid, and today.
  • I can't decide between these. Both have been "Neptuned" so they retain their sleek look (to me).

  • I love's me some Sega! When I'm at home, I do it big like this:

    image

....but sometimes you have to take it on the road, and for that:

    image

  • ^You know, using a model 1 Genesis and a model 1 Sega CD would make that first pic even taller!
  • I play on my CDX normally, but when I want to play my 32X, I rock a Gen 2 with a CD model 2.

I had the model 2, and the 32x, so I guess that is my setup as well.
  • Shocked to see so many model 2 fans...I personally can't stand them. The sound is SO bad, and they just look so cheap.

For me its just the original Model 1, no TMSS, MUCH better sound, and the one I have is literally 10/10 cosmetic condition. Honestly, don't know if it was ever used until I got it at a garage sale.

I don't use the 32x, power base, or cd for the same reason that those consoles/peripherals died horrible deaths almost immediately after launch... image

I DO want a cd eventually just because I collect and love the worst of the worst games, and that is 99% of sega cds library. Plus I have a sealed Criss Cross game I want to play!

I'm not a huge Sega CD fan myself, but the good games for the system are very solid.  If you have a chance, give something like Snatcher or Popful Mail a try before completely ignoring the system, you'll be happy you did.

Yea for sure. My comments were more tongue in cheek. I really want a Sega cd and 32x, and there is several awesome games for both.

But I stand by that Genesis model 2s suck! image

  • Model 2 Genesis, 32X and Sega CD from the side.
  • Genesis/CD/32X

  • Changing mine to CDX

  • Behold my tower of power. I didnt want to use my Power base and for got my Cleaning cart I could have made it taller
  • My favorite configuration is just the plain old model 1 on it's own, no bells or whistles needed.
