The Ex-Rentals Thread

So I thought this might be fun...

A lot of the games in my collection are obviously former rentals; they have inventory numbers written on them, phone numbers, stickers, etc.  What I find interesting is that some of the games still have the names and locations of the rental stores they came from.

My memories of the NES revolve around the games I would rent over the weekend, and I remember the store I rented from most often (Westfield Video on Aldine Westfield in Spring, TX).  I always thought it would be neat to come across an old game that I had actually rented from that store as a kid.

So below is a list of my games with stickers or markings from a rental store..  My hope is that some of the members here will look through their collection for rental IDs and we can keep a running list going with the store names & locations (I'll manage it).  Just reply to this thread and I'll add your games to the list.  Who knows?  Maybe you'll see a cart pop up that you remember renting back in the good 'ol days.

(Note:  Don't count actual retro shops that sticker their games, I'm just looking for rental copies.)

Send me the location of the store if possible - that way I can add it to the list in the right place.

Any help on the "Unknown" shops is appreciated!  Fun!  Good times!  Much happiness!

  • I've got a copy of Mickey's Adventure in Numberland from Blockbuster.
  • Does it say which Blockbuster?
  • My copy of Baseball Simulator 1.000 came from a Blockbuster, I believe. I'll have to check it when I get back home. My copies of A D&D Dragonstrike and Battletoads came from a store called The Video Library, then renamed Coach Video. My brother and sister used to work there and knew the owner, and he gave them to me because he couldn't get them to work and said if I got them working I could have them. Got 'em working in under 5 minutes. I remember how excited I was to get Battletoads, one of my favorite games ever.
  • i have spy vs spy and faxanadu
  • Austin - What store & location are they from?

    Matt - Where is/was Video Library/Coach Video?

  • no location just the valdid void if romoved sticker from the rental place no name
  • I have a few more Oregon ones for you
Treasure Master, Wolverine,Adventures of Tom Sawyer from Mid-Columbia Video 622 E. Third Street, The Dalles, OR 97058 (503)296-3456
You can read the details about how I got them here http://www.nintendoage.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=10&threadid=39146

EDIT* Oh yeah, Snake's Revenge too

  • Wow! I intended to make this exact thread a while back. Was going to call it The Rental Project. The only thing that stopped me was, every time I started digging through my collection for rental stickers, I got too lazy and gave up. In fact, that is still the issue. image Although, the fact that someone else gives a shit about this almost gives me the motivation to finally dig through them... Almost.

As I was typing that, I remembered that I happen to have a sticker next to me that came off one of my SNES carts. I don't remember which cart it come off, but here's what it says: (I assume it's from Calgary based on the phone number and location, but I am not 100% sure on that part)

    Calgary
Game Unknown - FLICKS VIDEO, 8282A Centre St. N.E. (Next to Co-Op) Tel: 295-8515
(And yes, the sticker looks like it says "Fucks Video".)
  • Ha - reminds me of a Chinese restaurant that we used to have - Fu Kim. Nice big sign right off the highway.

Added The Dalles and Calgary stores to the list - I hope more people join in!

Adam - I also thought about a list of games where people wrote their names on them, maybe we could've had some game/owner reunions.  But then I figured that would be a ridiculous list of way too many names - I have about half a dozen of Kincaide's old games, whoever that was.

  • My Megaman 1-4 come from the defunct Monarch Video in Vernon BC as do my Tiny Toon adventures and Adventures of Bayou Billy...

My baloon fight, starchip hector, metal storm, moster truck ralley and a couple of others come from some place called "REO'S"
  • I have (clear sticker over the game label removed) a Blockbuster rental of N64 game Transformers Beast Wars Transmetals. I know it was removed as it was mostly gone and I took it off all the way as it was ugly. image
  • Liam - added!

Tanooki - do you remember if it said which Blockbuster it was from?
  • I would post in here but I don't feel like going thru my collection, let's just say i probably have 100 or so former rentals, I'd say at least 75 still with labels on them.
  • I have quite a few ex rental games so I just grabbed a couple of them.

Contra Force - The Video Connection. The address label is removed. This was probably from Toledo

Panic Restaurant - Game Time Inc - Phone 1-800-651-GAME. Location unknown.

Wally Bear - Major Video - 1343 N Reynolds Toledo.

I also had a copy of Mega Man 1 for sale on here back in February. A NA user e-mailed me asking if he could buy it. It had a label on it from Churchill Video in Toledo. He said he rented it all the time as a kid. I felt bad that I had already traded it off when he PMed me about it.

Edit: Updated with a few more

Toki - Major Video - Same location above
Tiny Toons Cartoon Workshop - Video News 221 Main Toledo OH
Tecmo World Cup - Video News

I buy most of my games locally, so the majority of my ex-rentals are from Toledo. Others that I received in the mail I have usually cleaned off. I also have several from Blockbuster but they do not specify a location.

Remember clearly, it didn't.  The standard Blockbuster sticker in the latter 90s for stuff like this was a clear sticker which at the top rounded fringe as it was fit to style for N64 cart stickers just said Property of Blockbuster on it.  Blockbuster didn't tag them with stickers per store, and this cart if the stores chose to put secondary labels or marker on there to ID something didn't bother.  All I did was remove the failing sticker and then over like 30min or so used my thumb with some firmness to remove the sticky left over film to get it 'natural' again.
  • I used to hate rental stickers, then i thought it would be cool to save all the rental stickers because they are part of that carts history.

Ive thrown tons away in the past but now I usually leave them on the carts also.
  • Half my collection came from one of the 5 video stores I was a partner in. Super Video + (Alta Loma, CA. & Moreno Valley, CA. & Glendora, CA) Video World Plus (Fontana, CA. & Corona, CA.)

It was in Iowa Park, TX. It's been closed down for around 10-15 years. The Blockbuster would be located in Wichita Falls, TX but I have no idea which one. there were several at one time.
  • Starship Hector

    Venice Beach Volleyball

    Quattro Sports

    Wrath of the Black Manta

All of the above were from Hollywood Video (not related to the separate bankrupt chain) in Sunnyvale, CA. This place is still open too.

    Dr. Chaos-Blockbuster Video

(this one didn't have one of the rental code stickers; it only had the wraparound WARNING sticker. I can make an educated guess and say this came from San Jose, CA)
  • Wow, no one with a "48 Hours Video"? Though, I think they're later, but I remember renting genesis games from there. I have a couple N64 boxes and booklets with their sticker on them. Yoshi's Story, Mario Golf, etc. BTW, this is good ol' Pennsylvania =]
  • My Stadium Events had rental stickers from Randall Video in Geneva Illinois. As did my copy of Rocket Ranger. That video store is long since out of business.

Nope, just says blockbuster on it.

  • i have a couple from local stores around here.

I've been here 4 years and I'm pretty sure these were all closed before I arrived. The first address I'm having a hard time mapping. Next time I drive out that way I'll pay attention. I get the impression it existed as another rental place at some point and is currently a closed up Movie Gallery. The last two are a liquor store and exercise equipment retailer respectively.

  • ^^^ thats kinda funny. My wife grew up in Sioux falls and I asked about Premiere Video she says shes been there.
  • Shame I like a clean cart, good many of mine had been rentals but I'm good at purifying the damage outside, and in (the long sticker with the metal strip in it crap.)
  • My mistake; the Hollywood Video is based in Mountain View, CA. Sorry about that.
  • Updated. Thanks! Let's keep it going!
  • Here at my shop right now, I have these.

Best Reception, Pomeroy OH -- 3D Worldrunner

Noble Video, Caldwell OH -- Ski or Die

We usually peel them off and hit them with Goo Gone since we like our games to be clean. The ones above have the sticker on the label, so we didn't want to mess with them. Yesterday I peeled off:

Major Video (no city)-- Golf. This one also had Blockbuster stickers on it.

(forget store) Chattanooga, TN -- Bill Elliot's NASCAR Challenge

I'll have to go through my games at home when I get there. I don't take off rental labels on my personal games unless they're the generic Hollywood Video corporate ones.
