Database Entry "posts" idea

I think it would be cool if under a games database page there was a "shout box" or something where you could post messages pertaining to that game. It would look like a regular thread at the bottom of the screen perhaps. The "posts" just become part of that entry. Basically like every game had its own thread, but without the need for thousands of threads clogging stuff up. Although that is the idea of a message board, creating threads, it would act as a way to tie threads and info on a game together beyond that. To have more of the data about a game at your fingertips. Links to previously made threads could be added as entries.
I do think unlike some "shout boxes" it should log who posts what obviously, but these "posts" shouldn't count towards your post count. Avatars and sigs could be filtered out too, where it just leaves the
name of the poster, as to not potentially add a bunch of eye sores to the
entries. Its more about building user content around the games. I think its neat to see what other people are playing or doing.
To click the database entry, see cheats, maps, relevant threads, fan art, you name it.
Just some scenarios where it might be cool:
  • Someone plays a game and does really good and feel like sharing their accomplishment
"Just 1 lifed Contra"       "Got a high score of 4,555,555"      "Beat all 6 bosses without getting hit"
  • Someone playing an RPG could post updates on his progress or bits of knowledge he gained on his quests.
"Found a secret key at area 4-G on map XXX "        "Found out Ghosts are Weak to LIT"
  • Aside from RPGs you could post any knowledge pertaining to a game. Links to maps. Codes. Any sort of secrets people might find or even Boss strategy's and things of that nature.
  • I just made a Little Nemo quilt and I want to post a pic in the games entry so whenever someone looks up nemo they can see my blanket
I like how some entries in the database do have codes and stuff at the bottom already, but not all of them, and obviously Dain doesnt have the time to be adding trivial bits of info like that. It would be a way to let the community expand on the data for a game they really like. The more comprehensive the database is, the better I would think, and discussion is a nice element as well.

Maybe a dumb idea, but I think it could be pretty cool.

  • I actually think it's a great idea. Whether it could be implemented easily I don't know, but it doesn't sound too complicated. I'm a big fan of anything "wiki" style. Here we have a bunch of people who know a lot about video games, and it'd be great to share the knowledge. The only potential downside I see is that some of the games could get really messy after a while, and with a bunch of random comments may be extremely unorganized.

I've always thought it would be cool to give the users more power in adding information on games -- I was specifically thinking about things like reviews, cheats, pictures, etc. that we could add to games. I don't know. I like your idea though.
  • I can see this actually being pretty beneficial to the tool. Especially if someone is looking for general knowledge about that game, from other gamers.
  • Good idea. It could have reviews and all what you mention, would be really fun!
