Even the "fancy" screen on the iPhone 4 only bests that by 50 pixels, or so.

Given the size and form factor of the PSP, PSP Go and the supposed PSP Phone, I highly doubt the PSP2 is going to be much bigger than a 4.3" screen. I have an EVO, and a 4.3" screen is HUGE for a "pocket sized" device. I have an otter box for my phone, and I'd guess that approximates having roughly 3x the battery volume...and it's really pushing the limit in terms of size, not just for a phone, but for any handheld device.

Then again, Sony did release that ridiculous mini Vaio during the netbook craze that they claimed could be carried in your pocket.

For that matter, they posted major losses due to the haircut they took on PS3's during the first season of that release, so I guess all bets are off, really, in terms of inept things Sony is likely to do in the marketplace.

I dunno, I just remembered seeing this pic:
    http://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/psp2-could-be-annou...

Yeah I dunno like you say it could be anything and I'm really just talkin out my ass, I just think Sony has always seemed to rely on hyping about their Hardware, and if their hardware gets beat out by an IPhone thats already out when they release, I think they are doomed.

Edit: I know that pic isn't the actual psp2 or anything, just made me think of ridiculously big screen image

You do realize that's a fan-made render from a LONG time ago... image

I agree, that for them to succeed, they have to do SOMETHING better than the iPhone, since it already has a pretty hefty graphics processor.

But if they stuff dual analog controls into the thing along with a bunch of tactile buttons...they've already crushed what the iPhone can do in terms of gaming.  800x480 is already WAY more screen information than the DS/PSP, so for that to be on dedicated gaming hardware is already a big step relative to the current gen.  I haven't looked to see how it stacks up against the 3DS, though.

Support for advanced lighting effects, high level of detail at longer viewing distances, etc, all matter more than plain resolution, IMO, so it remains to be seen what they'll be able to do in that department, as well.

With all this talk of 4 inch screens, I just had to bring it in!  hehe  Who is going to put that in their pocket.  What they should have is hinges on the sides of the device so the game
controls flip over and hide the widescreen which takes up the whole back of
    the thing! image

I figure they will have 1 good cpu processor, and 1 good separate graphics processor
I think they need specs.  Saying "yeah the Iphone is more powerful, but we have game controls" I think is not going to cut it at least not very well.

I hope they also have a decent size screen.  I've been disappointed with screens on portables for ages.  You always end up with a screen the size of a phone screen on a device three times as big.

  • kind-of Latest news: 3DS will be region locked (American, European-Australian, Japanese), and the IPhone 5 will have dual core processors. The 3ds will be 250 dollars by the way.

EDIT: the iPhone thing is a rumor actually, from Engadget. The rest is official.

I'm not surprised.  There are already Android phones with dual core processors, so iPhone is actually behind in that sense.
  • how long does battery last in these kind of phones? you said it was minimal battery time...

As a phone, with infrequent use of intensive features, you can get a whole day out of them.

With all the gizmos whirring and doing stuff, running the processor full throttle, and playing some game that uses 3G/4G or GPS, maybe 2-3 hours, tops.  If you turned off all of the transmitting features, and just used it as a gaming device, I really have no idea, maybe 4 hours?

DS, by comparison, gets something insane like 14 hours of game time.
I don't know how the regular PSP stacks up.

ETA:  if you're looking for a comparison of if they actually did a 4-core handheld, with a dedicated GPU, "large" screen (let's call that 5 inches), fully backlit, I think you'd be reduced to GameGear-like battery life when using a "normal" 1750 mAH battery pack (read 30 minutes image)
  • 30 minutes in gaming heaven image . The PSP does around 4 hours of continuous gaming (depends on the game too) with a 1200 mAH battery. There are optional 2200 mAH batteries which almost double that time.

On the 3DS locking, that should be a great disappointment for nintendo fans. If the PSP has some sort of physical media, and doesn't do region lock, it will make a great selling point.
  • I'm not going to buy either personally, I still think a DSi is the perfect handheld/portable system and I don't see a reason to upgrade.

It really depends. Depends what kind of processor and the hz on it too. The dual-core Arm processor runs at 2GHz while consuming 1.9 watts of power, and when running at scaled down speed consumes less power. They are making them more efficient all the time.

Also, you put a bigger battery in them and they have the same battery time, but are heavier and clunkier.

    Edit: add quote

  • Sorry, that comment about 1,9 watts is dumb image, anyway what I mean is processors are getting more and more efficient too. Arm keeps releasing newer processors that get more and more power without increasing the energy footprint too much.

Also, there are probably tricks they can do to scale the power consumption down when it isn't needed.
  • Nintendo 3DS sounds pretty sick. I will definitely be looking to pick one up. Depending on the price, I may wait for the first drop to pick one up though. No way I will buy a PSP 2 if its download only. I will have to wait until I know more about it.
  • Well it was announced today that the 3DS will be released in North America on March 27th,  with a retail price of $249.99.  Below at the link are a list of launch and upcoming titles as well. image  I can not WAIT!

    Why would it be?
  • I guess not then, and I guess importing games from other regions (especially Japan) is not something you're concerned with. I thought the region locking would be a let down for many people.
  • Region locking is much bigger deterrent if you don't live in the USA or Japan. Imported Japanese games don't do you a lot of good if you can't read them (since most of the games that don't make it to the USA are JRPG's of one sort, or another), so the market for them (outside of pure collectors) is pretty tiny, or else they would have been localized and you wouldn't need to import it in the first place.

Wait, what? Why would they region lock it? That really is a letdown.    There are hundreds of Japanese games that require no language skills to play.  Plus I sometimes buy the Euro version of a game just for the better cover art.
  • i pre ordered my 3ds on amazon, im so excited for it.
  • Interesting, according to that, a lot of their launch titles seem to be 3D versions of classics.
I don't really want one, but I am quite excited to see one image I want to see how good the 3D is!

    Edit:

In my opinion the whole idea of region locking is completely terrible.  Trying to undermine trade agreements between countries and force people to pay different amounts for the same product goes against my grain.

I don't know about recent games, but there is a crapload of nes and PS1 games I love that are fully playable with no japanese knowledge and were never released here.

Same here, gotta love no tax and only $9.99 for next day shipping!
  • Well, time to start saving up.

Release date is the day before my bday! March 27th it comes out.

$249.99 isn't bad... we'll see how the cash is at that point.
  • I heard the games are going to be $40-$50 as well, yikes!

I was expecting $250, I knew it would be $200-$250. I heard people saying $300, but I knew that was way too high.
  • I didnt read all the posts here so if this has been brought up already....my bad. I was reading that in order to get the full 3D effect.....you have to keep the system perfectly still. Whats up with that crap?
  • if the original psp is any indication I'll grab a psp2 as soon as someone gets homebrew running on it without restrictions (no silly alternate os junk)

and the 3ds as soon as I can find a good condition used one for under $100
  • I am going to buy both regardless of which one is 'better' because there are going to be games I'd want for both. I already pre-ordered 2 3DS systems (one of each color) and as soon as PSP2 pre-orders start, I'll be doing that as well.

That was added to make the system more "retro". Remember the Gameboy Color? Couldn't see the screen for anything.

    j/k. I haven't a clue.
  • so the above link says $250... not terrible, add a game and it turns to about a $320 touch. I figured I would go pre order one from gamestop here... well I walked in and they told me they're selling it for $299.99 for the system alone, and that's down $50 from toys r us who are apparently telling ppl it's going to be $349.99. YIKES!! I don't know what to believe.

Long story short, that's too much so I pre ordered Pokemon White and forgot all about the 3ds pre order.
  • ^^those over-pricing bastards! Some online store should have it at the announced price.
  • I don't know if it's just that the states gets it for 250 and us canucks are getting hosed.. oh well, it is money that could be used in much better ways, maybe like fixing something on the ole house. :S
