  • I had never used an emulator until recently. I purchased a DS Lite and wanted to be able to play NES/SNES games on it. Having tons of NES and SNES games on a single flashcard for play on a DS is freaking awesome! A million times better than paying $20+ a pop for the Super Mario remakes on the GBA.

Speaking of roms... are we allowed to mention them on this site? Like, can we discuss where to download them? I don't want to start the conversation of it isn't allowed.

You are allowed to discuss ROMS in general, but not link to or discuss how to obtain any copyrighted ROMS (generally speaking)

I agree that using save states is cheating yourself out of the true experience.

Like RetroSnow said, I also use emulators as a try before you buy on pricey games. If I intend to buy the game but play it a lot via emulation it takes a lot of the fun out of getting the actual cartridge.

I was doing this when I first started collecting but I stopped its more like back in the old days if you just pick up a game based on art, without knowing if its worth a damn or not.It adds to the nostalgia of it all.

  • emulators still have their ups

+ good for writing FAQS (savestates etc)

    + good for making maps

+ good for making gameplay vids

    + writing game genie codes

+ testing out that spiffy new homebrew your workin on image

There is plenty of discussion on "how", in terms of dumping ROMs, etc.

Just don't link to distribution sites, post copyrighted ROMs directly, or otherwise come off as a whiner looking for hand holding asking specific places to find them.

  • The only emulator I don't have anything against is the one built into the wii. I think it's because you're still playing nintendo games on a nintendo system with a nintendo controller. Emulators just aren't the same. When I told my sister what Star Fox 2 cost she asked me why I couldn't just play it online for free. I don't think she got my explanation about the fact that you can't hold a rom, you can't put a rom in your snes and play it with an snes controller, and other things you can only do with a physical cartridge. For some reason I'll never understand she seems to think I was paying for the rom rather than the ability to play it the only way it's supposed to be played.
  • Wii emulator is TERRIBLE. There's something up with it. The colors are off and the sprites flicker bad. >.<
  • It's alright if you're not playing in widescreen mode and/or on a HDTV. Blows hard on an HD...
