Yes that's just the USA at $249.99, can't say for canada they don't have a price set yet so maybe that's why they're all over the board. I need to check with toys r us or suck it up and sadly break my no gamestop buying rule. I want to get it from amazon or bestbuy but those jerks want a preBUY for $250+shipping/tax and I'm not popping down around $270 and have nothing to show for it for 2months.
Looking forward to the 3DS. I'll pick it up on launch day. Almost a tradition with me. Gameboy Advance, Gameboy SP, DS and DS Lite I picked up on launch day so I'm sure 3DS will be the same. Looks like quite a few fun games are scheduled, Metal Gear, Resident Evil, Kid Icarus, Zelda, Mario Kart... can't wait.
Not when I last checked it wasn't, but it's also under pre-order status so that may be part of the problem too. Like I said though in the end I'm likely this friday when I get paid heading to TRU or if I have to Gamestop and putting down $50 for a black one as I'm not missing out. I have just a huge problem (plus I don't have it right this moment) placing down $270~ on a thing I can't have for 2 months allowing them to have my money on a promise. $50 kinda sucks too, but I'd rather do a down payment than a pre-payment.
I don't know if it's just that the states gets it for 250 and us canucks are getting hosed.. oh well, it is money that could be used in much better ways, maybe like fixing something on the ole house. :S
They always do that. Just order it online from the U.S. Those moronic retailers in Canada will figure it out eventually when they have no customers.
Not to kill your buzz on the PSP2, but there is no conceivable way it could be in the same league, hardware-wise, as the PS3, unless the slated release date is 2016, or later
Even if they could get an 8-core processor and the accompanying RAM into a device that small, you'd be dealing with the issues of burning your hands for the whole 2 minutes you'd be able to power the device.
Yup that fits with what I knew of their PSP2 plans, guess they're just gonna go with it after all. I figured they would go with a 3D setup like the 3DS to combat them, but I guess they figure an awkward reverse side touch panel to grope so it feels what to do on the screen is a good idea alone (I can't see how that would be intuitive really.) The fact it's on the 3DS level with the PS3 kinda like style graphics due to filters/tricks is a good thing, curious I am what form of storage (if it's Go! style they can suck it), and I'd like to see how helpful a 5" OLED will do against the 3DS panels.
Waver just because it says it 'looks' like PS3 graphics doesn't mean it's in the same ballpark, he's right, it would be disgustingly hot on the hands, and worse on the wallet for such micronized speed in your hands just 11months away. The 3DS due to it's filters, hardware setup on the graphics chip, other tweaks via hardware and APi software it can look like a PS3 game too on it. If anything it's probably a marginally better piece of hardware than the PSP at base value jump wise, it's probably like a GB to a GBC type boost, double or so the guts, better screen, the reverse touch panel, the dual sided cameras and the rest.
Just not into portable gaming, thats it. Have owned basically everyone release and always leave me thinking they are overpriced. Pass on both. Consoles for me.

Read this again:
"President of SCE Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, told the audience at the Tokyo event that the NGP's graphics are of PlayStation 3 quality, reported game blog Kotaku, which had reporter Brian Ashcraft on site and live blogging from the event."
And this:
" 'This game used the model data and environments from PS3, and it was exported directly to NGP," Kojima said, adding, "On NGP, we can enjoy the same quality as the PS3.' "
This is obviously not a mere "marginally better piece of hardware than the PSP". And, contrary to your assertion, it is most certainly in the same ballpark as the PS3. You are incorrect.
Well you'll have to excuse me for not buying the marketing hype and being able to objectively realize that downscaling the resolution by more than 50% is NOT "PS3 quality". I wouldn't be surprised if the polygon count, as well as shadow-counts, draw-distances, etc were similarly downscaled.
Being a semi-current PC gamer, I'm intimately familiar with how many knobs can be dialed to reduce quality and allow the same release of the same game to play on massively different levels of customer hardware.
Porting a PS3 game to the handheld is not at all the same as the device having "ps3 quality graphics".
I will concede that the device is much more powerful than I expected (4-core, vs dual core), but that will come at the cost I stated previously, of seriously reduced battery life.

Why don't we also look back and find some press releases detailing what Nintendo was saying about the Virtual Boy.
Hey, and as far as battery life goes, you never know. I mean, an iPod touch can go for a week on one charge, and my MacBook Pro gets 10-12 hours.
Waverboy it's marketing. If you want to eat the marketing that it's as powerful as a PS3, go for it. Reality though will dictate just like the 3DS is internally to developers being something that can give the 'look' of a 360/PS3 game, but it isn't as powerful. Neither display at a true HD 720 or 1080 output, they both don't have all the complex hardware of a 360 or a PS3 either. What they do, they have higher polygon output well over the PSP does, and then their graphical chips and APIs will allow for a ton of eye candy graphical tricks that will allow notching up how it looks far nicer than you'd think the hardware can do. The 3DS as we know from Capcom can use its engine they used for their PS3/360 engine Resident Evil 5 and others use, straight port, and Konami says much the same with their tools used on the Metal Gear series. The systems due to their graphical chipsets and APIs can use existing console tools to give that look and feel, but they'll never output as nicely it just allows for cool marketing buzz to sucker people in to a buy.
Nintendo wins, Sony will not take a loss on this hardware which will keep the price up in +500-600 range at first. They simply will not be able to keep up, especially with Nintendo lead time and all their killer apps. I predict The 3DS will sell out fast [once Zelda and Kid Icarus release]and prices will inflate online making folks who can invest Lot's of money.
I think the 3DS will win, but it will be very similar to PSP vs. DS. I still think the NGP will do just fine. I was pretty pumped after watching some of the demo videos actually.
Sony already said (without disclosing a real number) that it won't cost 600 USD, my guess is around $450 (let's see who nails the right price!). It'll also come in two presentations: with and without 3G, so the price can be actually lower for the non3G version.
I also want to point out that Sony never said it would have PS3 like graphics: that was said by 3rd party devs (Konami?), and it was "ps3 like games" (complexity-wise), not graphics (I think). They also made clear that it should be possible with games not having a 1080 or even 720P output (a small screen doesn't need that). For battery life, my guess is they'll settle with 4 hours of gameplay (more for video, and even more for music), as with the original PSP, possibly with a 2200 mAH battery. They can save battery life with the new flash cards and the OLED display.
For the 3DS winning, yeah, that's probable, but I guess competition will be closer this time, now that there's a fully operating PSN and online Store, with many games already available, an iTunes like software already there, and a dual channel of game distribution (physical and download).
I do like the thought of 3G, only if it's free. If there is a monthly charge, I don't see it taking anything from what a phone can do now. Maybe if they do like Kindle's and give you free 3G to visit the PSN, since I don't know if 3G can handle online gaming yet.

It's not free shipping from Amazon?

Toys R Us just started a preorder on it, $20 down, none of that $250 fully up front crap bestbuy, amazon and a few others are pulling.
For amazon they don't even take any of your money until it ships, which is nice. So I won't be charged anything till it ships March 27th.

I'm pretty sure Amazon doesn't actually charge you until the item ships. At least that's how their preorders usually work
Edit: Looks like Penguin beat me to it!

Apparently you might be incorrect on that:
