There is a coin box in world 8 - 1 that helps you get to another coin box but it is in a area near a flying koopa. I tried to jump over the koopa but I hit the box then the koopa killed me.

to some different part of the game and the enemies were like level 1000
and killed my entire party in one attack! I was like WTF chuck. I

and then jump to your death. Because it's literally impossible to make
that jump with Item 1 or 2. (And seriously - it's Metal Man - who
doesn't want that item first?)

that let's you warp around. You toss it and press a button and appear
in its place. It's critical in the last level to bypass some obstacles.
Thing is, they programmed it horribly. When you are approached by
this spike barrier thing, you throw it down, run, and prepare to warp
after it passes it. But the barrier makes it disappear when it hits it.
This makes you think it's gone, but really only the image is gone,
it's still in the code and you'll warp to where it was.

Legend of Zelda: The rock picker-upper....thing ring?
I remember always going for it pretty early in the game, and having
to go the long route to get to it. Having to go through all those horse
enemies by level 6, and going around Death Mountain, only to activate
at least half of those statues before I finally found it and died before
walking over to get it. Ugh!

Let me also add the watch item in Castlevania I and III. Some may
disagree, but it has very minimal use to me.Not only that, but the holy
water can be used to not only freeze enemies on contact, but it also
damages them as well, which the watch doesn't do. It doesn't even fit in
with the other weapons...dagger,boomerang,axe,holy water,and.....watch?!

desert, up the tower, and back where you left to continue on.

I don't have a list at the ready, but the multitude of RPG items that are discovered on seemingly random map squares, the first time through the game.
I know in Dragon Warrior you have to seach a toxic mash? square for an item. Someone tells you something like 25 south 48 west. And you have to go to that exact square. Belive there is an item that takes you there. I remember tring to count that shit out though! Arrrrgh.

That's the Lionel at the top of that area with the water/waterfall mix, and it's the White Sword if I remember right and yeah it is kind of a bitch to get to as they hit hard. Though sticking with Zelda the hidden shop with the blue ring could be considered a 'worst' as I don't think there was any specific hint saying, go here for the armor increasing ring' so you just had to bumble upon it I think.
Another worst placed, not so much an item, but that lame dungeon in Zelda Phantom Hourglass, always had to go back, redo all the same crap on the clock, then do the added room to get the permission marker to boat all the way back across the map again to do the next thing just to return and wish, rinse, and aggravatingly, repeat.

I did the same thing when I was a kid. I spent a ton of time trying to count exactly what square I was at so that I could find that item (was it Erdrick's sword?). Then after quite some time I realize that the Princess's Love item tells you your coordinates.

THIS ^ with that extra man, nice call Adam.

In Dash Galaxy and the Alien Asylum, in stage 10-1, there is an extra life suspended over a pit and the only way to collect the extra life is to kill yourself by jumping in the pit. There is absolutely no way to collect it without dying in the process. I attached a pic to show everyone what I'm talking about.
I bet some idiots have wasted hours on getting that life.

Also, does the white toad house or treasure ship count in SMB3?
