Does anyone else hate Zelda 2?
I grew up with Zelda 2. I love the game. I love the action-y rpg that it is. It was probably the game that took the most of my time growing up. But in all my life, I only finished it about two years ago. I just zipped through the "second quest" where you don't have to earn your stats, but do have to earn your items. And still I hate the Great Palace. With a map, I have finally found the Palace itself to be manageable, but Thunderbird drives me crazy!
I like this game a lot, but I just hate finishing it. I've only managed to do so once in my entire life.
Who's with me?

I really enjoyed Zelda 2 though, but I also am really big into RPG's.
For Thunderbird, I cast Shield, Jump, Reflect and Fireball, then when he appears Thunder (this will take pretty much all of your magic), and he goes down with several hits to the face.
I love Zelda II. It is one of my favorite NES games, ever.
I tried to like it, but it's just too different for me. Has a lot less of a fun factor.
I'm not sure why anyone though this game was hard. I do plan to play through it again in a month or so (after I get through some other NES games) without any external references/FAQ/maps and only a faded memory of the game.
StanJr, I thought Fireballs didn't hurt him - do they? And Reflect? What's that going to do? I don't get it.
Love Zelda 2. Even more than the original, to be honest.
I recall feeling the same way 20 years ago.
Where is Phil when you need him to drop bombs on a thread? hehe
Just lurking.
3Gen, the encounters on the overworld aren't random - when you step off the road, those three guys show up. You can sometimes avoid them, but life is nicer when you stay on the road. The cave to the far left should be your second one. The cave the the upper right has a single enemy and leads to the first palace, where you'll get a candle with which to see.

Sorry, not Fire. You don't have the magic to cast Fire. Memory is a bit fuzzy. But Reflect will repel his shots off your shield like it does with the wizzrobes.
Thoroughly enjoyed this game. Like others, I don't quite understand the hate for it either.
I was able to beat this one as a kid (2nd grade!), although I admit I have a much harder time these days. I recently finished the GBA re-release version a few months back, but got reamed at the last palace. Had to view a FAQ and a video on YouTube.
I did find out through watching videos that the Shadow Link is mega-easy. IIRC, you sit in the far left corner and duck and attack as fast as you can. You trade hits back and forth with him but you will kill him way before he gets close to doing serious damage to you.
It's unusual because no other enemy in the game has invulerability periods.
I tried that trick with Shadow Link the one time I did beat the game. He still jumped at me, and hit me often. I still died once or twice. I did beat him that way, but I don't think it was much different than anywhere else, as I recall.
And speaking of terrible changes to Zelda games, how about that 3d?
Reflect, eh? [starts up NES]
It'll always be one of my favorites. Thunderbird is the only real thing that still haunts me from that game. So many controllers thrown there in my childhood.
Fighting Shadow Link was easiest for me when I stood at the left. He jumped less often. Stab like a madman, it'll work. Next time: less cheap on the kills.
