Does anyone else hate Zelda 2?

I grew up with Zelda 2. I love the game. I love the action-y rpg that it is. It was probably the game that took the most of my time growing up. But in all my life, I only finished it about two years ago. I just zipped through the "second quest" where you don't have to earn your stats, but do have to earn your items. And still I hate the Great Palace. With a map, I have finally found the Palace itself to be manageable, but Thunderbird drives me crazy!

I like this game a lot, but I just hate finishing it. I've only managed to do so once in my entire life. image Who's with me?

  • Seconded.
  • I finished it about 5 years ago, and I agree with Thunderbird, he is a beyotch to beat.

I really enjoyed Zelda 2 though, but I also am really big into RPG's.
  • I never had a problem with Thunderbird as much as I did Shadow Link. It is pain in the butt backing him into the corner so that he does the jump into your ducking attack.

For Thunderbird, I cast Shield, Jump, Reflect and Fireball, then when he appears Thunder (this will take pretty much all of your magic), and he goes down with several hits to the face.

I love Zelda II. It is one of my favorite NES games, ever.
  • Hated it, still hate it, but at the same time I like some parts so I just can't see parting with the game. I finished it once, and that was after slogging through it up to the invisible ghosts area thing. A few years later I came back to it on one of my hell no I'm not leaving this thing, found that stupid cross I somehow missed and offed the rest in one sitting. Since then I've never bothered doing 25% of it, let alone the whole thing.
  • I hate how they made it from a great formula and simplicity to a same overworld, but then not added the towns and more caves and different things, but they made them from a side view, shafted the graphics and fun, and made it near impossible to get anywhere. I grinded so much, but I can never make it out of the first cave. The one where it's to the left of the palace, underneath that town. Ick! And don't get me started on the enemy encounters, what the crap is with them appearing on the overworld?!?!

I tried to like it, but it's just too different for me. Has a lot less of a fun factor.
  • I completed this game at least a dozen times back at release. Hell, I went through three times in a row on the same save just to see if anything different happens! I actually found the game rather easy. The only difficult part was the final battle, and that is made a lot easier if you have a turbo button.

I'm not sure why anyone though this game was hard. I do plan to play through it again in a month or so (after I get through some other NES games) without any external references/FAQ/maps and only a faded memory of the game.
  • The only game I hate is total Reak All
  • Sorry, just hate image Tho I may just need to give it more playing time...
  • no bueno. more of a let down than the Phantom Menace
  • I love it, maybe more than the original. I've gone through it doing 8-1-1, 1-8-1, and 1-1-8 challenges. Fun times.
  • 3Gen, the encounters on the overworld aren't random - when you step off the road, those three guys show up. You can sometimes avoid them, but life is nicer when you stay on the road. The cave to the far left should be your second one. The cave the the upper right has a single enemy and leads to the first palace, where you'll get a candle with which to see. image

StanJr, I thought Fireballs didn't hurt him - do they? And Reflect? What's that going to do? I don't get it.
  • Love Zelda 2. Even more than the original, to be honest.
  • i can't believe so many people like this game, i hated it within the first 15 minutes of playing when my neighbors got it as a kid and i haven't touched it since. it says zelda but it's not the zelda i know and love. the side view freaks me out. I think i might like it more if it was titled as something other than a sequel to one of my favorite games.
  • YES! in fact, TAOL is an abomination compared to TLOZ. Abomination. Zelda: Outlands is the REAL Zelda II. Whilst I appreciate wanting to expand the franchise, the graphics, gameplay and story all fall short of the original. This is a classic case of the "sophomore slump."
  • Loved it then and love it now.. Had a hard time beating it when i was young but did manage to do so. The first one i found much more frustrating as a kid.
  • Where is Phil when you need him to drop bombs on a thread? hehe

I recall feeling the same way 20 years ago.

I'm not sure now. I'll be replaying them soon.
  • I loved the game as a kid and love it now. It's like top 3 Zelda games for me. But I have only beat it once in my life and probably won't pick it up again until I beat my 500+ games in my collection
  • Because I felt like i was playing Dragon Quest.

    Just lurking.
  • It's been my favorite title in the series since it was new.
  • I never understood why people didn't like the game, other than the blue bird soldiers in the last castle. The only thing I really thought was lacking was the second quest. Should have been different like in the first game.

Sorry, not Fire. You don't have the magic to cast Fire.  Memory is a bit fuzzy. But Reflect will repel his shots off your shield like it does with the wizzrobes.

  • Thoroughly enjoyed this game. Like others, I don't quite understand the hate for it either.

I was able to beat this one as a kid (2nd grade!), although I admit I have a much harder time these days. I recently finished the GBA re-release version a few months back, but got reamed at the last palace. Had to view a FAQ and a video on YouTube.

I did find out through watching videos that the Shadow Link is mega-easy. IIRC, you sit in the far left corner and duck and attack as fast as you can. You trade hits back and forth with him but you will kill him way before he gets close to doing serious damage to you.

  • The best thing to remember about Shadow Link, if you don't want to cheap him, is that after you hit him, he has an invulnerability period that lasts about a second. Often I see people run in there and try to wail away. They'll get in a hit then stay aggressive and wind up taking damage before they can even actually even hit him again.

It's unusual because no other enemy in the game has invulerability periods.
  • I was talking about the randomness of the 3 enemies/fairies/whatevers that come up. I'd rather it be random and pokemon-like then that way. It's just......has no relation to Zelda 1. That's what I hate about it more probably. Maybe I'll give it another try, though. I've always wanted to get good and beat it, but man. Those knights in the cave are impossible.
  • The Ironknuckles (knights) just take a bit of practice. Walk towards them, and quickly duck and stab. Either you'll hit him and he'll bounce away, or you'll hit his shield and he'll bounce away. Rinse and repeat. image

I tried that trick with Shadow Link the one time I did beat the game. He still jumped at me, and hit me often. I still died once or twice. I did beat him that way, but I don't think it was much different than anywhere else, as I recall.

And speaking of terrible changes to Zelda games, how about that 3d? image No thank you! Zelda 2 is just misunderstood.

    Reflect, eh? [starts up NES]
  • The thing I hate the most about this game is the hate it gets because it has the Zelda name and doesn't play like the first Zelda. That always seems to be the biggest reason I hear for people not liking it.

It'll always be one of my favorites. Thunderbird is the only real thing that still haunts me from that game. So many controllers thrown there in my childhood. image
  • Maybe Zelda 2 has a 'hidden' origin history like SMB 2 has.. Only Nintendo kept it hidden better this time lol. Perhaps it is actually a ripoff of Battle of Olympus! image
  • Yup, Reflect. Fireballs are absorbed by your shield, which cuts your frontal damage taken in half - or better. I also discovered that your backside is slightly better protected by the left-hand edge - it cuts hit recognition down right at the edge.

Fighting Shadow Link was easiest for me when I stood at the left. He jumped less often. Stab like a madman, it'll work. Next time: less cheap on the kills. image
