Nesruler's 2011 Contest Presents: Abadox

Hey everyone.  This week's contest is going to be Abadox.  It's going to be a simple one this week, so here are the rules:

  • 1 life only
  • No point racking/harvesting/farming
  • Score must be achieved only up to completion of the game once.
  • Participation:10,000

The contest ends Sunday, 3/13/11 at 10 PM NA time, 9 PM central time.  Your user name must be in the picture for your score to be valid.  The entire TV screen, or computer monitor if you are playing on an emulator, MUST be in the picture for the score to be valid.  No partial screenshots will be considered or accepted.  Good luck everyone and have fun!

    Fug this game, I hate it with a passion. Lots of memorization required. Sigh, do I really want to pull this one out? Why not?

    Yeah I've only gave this game a couple trys but that second level seems kind of brutal, shit was flying everywhere. I'll give it a few more tries later on.

    I never played this game before, but let's see how far can I go.

    The only thing I don't like about it is that lots of the points in the levels (especially downwards ones), are just about obstacle memorization. It's one of those games where if you're not at full power you might as well forget it. Luckily, you just shut it off anyway when you lose a life.

    Well, got pretty far.  Stupid downward part with living poop monster always gets me.  Edit: New score after this post.

    New score below.  This game is actually pretty easy when you memorize certain enemy positions.  The one level is the hardest (five or six I forget).  The one with the ghost lights.  Freaking annoying.  If you don't have good hands those things swarm you and it's all over fast.  I hate them.  There's one point with this closing barrier thing that they trap you in a tight spot and you have to move fast to get past it.

    Bimmy, can we add two rules to this particular contest?

    1. No point stacking. This is possible on some bosses where they throw little enemies at you and you can avoid killing the boss while gaining points.  First boss, for example, throws these little blobs at you that at your current power level pose no challenge.  If you wanted, you could put a chair on the button and come back later to a sick score.

    2. Score must be achieved ONLY up to completion of the game ONCE. I say this because I seem to remember that after you beat it once it sets on invincibility mode and you would thus be able to get a ridiculous score if no one knew about it. I'll have to see when I eventually beat it again, but I'm pretty sure on that.

    Good thinking on the rules, Stan. Point racking will not be allowed and the scores can only be achieved through completion of the game once, if someone beats it. I'll update the top post as well to reflect these new rules.

    Just want to warn everyone about this:



    If you're about to fight the last boss (stage 6), take a picture of your score before.



    The last boss don't give any more points. After beating it, the score disappear and never reappear thereafter. Also, after the end credit, you don't restart at stage 1, you get back to the title screen.

    I had to attach the picture rather than upload it to my post because the photo uploader doesn't appear to be working right now.  Every time I try to upload a photo, it says that it is down right now.  Any way, here's my first attempt.  I have to say, this game is a lot more frustrating than I thought it would be.  I can manage to beat the first boss in level 2, but every time I get past that, I get killed in like 2 seconds while trying to maneuver down the skinny corridor.  There's just too much crap coming at me for me to dodge it without getting killed.

    Yeah, it requires a lot of memorization. The last level is the hardest, mainly because of some poor design and those damn ghost lights. Hint, though it seems cooler, don't drop the laser for the ring gun, stick with the laser once you get it. It's really the only way to kill things fast enough. Thanks for the suggestion, guill. Didn't know that. Depending on how much other people play, this is going to come down to who manages to kill the most enemies early on. Might come down to just a few points.

    Yeah, people that can get to the end will then need to concentrate on beating the game while killing as much monsters as possible throughout. I think I prefer this than looping infinitely with minimal difficulty increased (like in Life Force). This will make shorter game, which is a good thing.

    Yeah, when beating it, I only increased my score by about 500 points. You spend so much time dodging all the shit they throw at you you really can't get more points in the last leg of the game. The score does indeed reset when you beat it. You are in fact invincible, but it doesn't matter because your score resets. Really going to come down to the wire in this game if anyone can get far enough, this is all about those few extra points early on. I'll post my new score later, I don't think I feel like beating it again, it gets rather boring after a few goes.

    Just wanted to give everyone a heads up that my schedule at work is changing for the next 2 months and I'll have to update the leaderboard on Monday afternoons instead of Sunday nights. I'll post the results at the conclusion of each contest on Sunday night before I head off to bed.

    Well that is silly if you are going to do it that way, your two "wins" mean nothing then. I can go back and crush your Trog score and I have no problem beating what ever Abadox score you may have.

    C'mon Stan, you got to do this in a time frame no matter what. The contest is a good field for your personal war with Mog.

    Well, if you look above you'll see that I WAS going to post the score, but I was only able to get back on three minutes after the deadline (next post). If you want to count my score, that's fine. The server or whatever here was screwed because students just came back from Spring Break and naturally flooded the internet because they had to catch up on a week's worth of homework. I wasn't able to get in until 10:03, which took awhile to load in the first place. The score was technically finished within the time frame, just not posted. Let me know if I can still submit based on the circumstances.

    The only time we have allowed for late submissions for the contests is if nintendoage itself is down, which happened a couple weeks ago. Unfortunately, we don't allow late submissions for home internet issues.
