Adventure Island Vs Wonder Boy

Which series do you think is better, Wonder Boy or Adventure Island? We
know the first game in each series is pretty much the same game just
published by different companies, Sega and  Hudson respectively. After
the first game though, the 2 series take drastically different paths
with Adventure Island sticking more or less to the same formula, and
Wonder Boy going with a more open  sidescrolling RPG/adventure formula
and even expanding into another series, Monster World.

I know more people are probably  familiar with Adventure Island, but
I've never been a huge fan of the series. I definitely prefer the Wonder
Boy series because of its adventure/RPG aspect. I just nevr cared for
the original formula for whatever reason. I reallydon't even like the
first Wonder Boy.  To me Wonder Boy III: Dragon's Trap and Monster World
IV are some of the greatest sidescrollers ever created. I just really
enjoy that open exploration type of game play mechanic.

So anyway, which do you prefer and why? I'll be asking on both NA and SA

  • Wonderboy without a doubt. With that being said, I think Adventure Island is a great series in it's own right.
  • Wonderboy, no contest at all in my opinion. Wonderboy III, and by an even greater margin, Monster World IV, are head and shoulders above any installment of the Adventure Island series. I'd wager that anyone who disagrees hasn't played MWIV. For my money, I think it is the single best game released on the Genesis/Megadrive, but I don't know if others would go that far.
  • I love them both about equally. Adventure Island is one of my favorite games of all time, and one of my first and most played games as a kid. I rented 2 and 3 a couple times when I was a kid and they were pretty damn fun. That being said, a little later on my friends showed my Wonder boy in Monster World on the Genesis, and that was a blast. Moving on to the present, I played the rest of the Wonder Boy games, and they are all amazing. I was able to beat the original Wonder Boy on the Master System, which I was never able to do with Adventure Island on the NES when I was a kid.
  • I added a third option for the fence sitters out there
  • Thank you good sir.
  • ^^No problem man.

I honestly need to give the Adventure Island games another shot. There were many series I didn't care for in my younger days that I've grown to love. I've been wanting to give the 4th one a go since I hear it is a more open experience similar to the Wonder Boy games.
  • Wonderboy anytime. Adventure Island I've played all 4 on the NES/Famicom and they've pretty strongly sucked, not so much due to the basic design, but the fact the design didn't really expand much or go anywhere to make it worth sticking around. Wonderboy started basic and it evolved really nicely over the years on the Master System and the arcade (and beyond.) And anyway, it was the real series, the other was just a spinoff using a template.
  • I prefer the original Wonderboy over the original Adventure Island. It has more colorful visuals and is a slightly easier game (yet is still hard as hell).

I really like how Adventure Island kept improving on that basic gameplay concept though, especially once Hudson hit with Super Adventure Island. Wonderboy went in a completely different direction and I have to be in a specific kind of mood to play those. I never did play the Genesis WB games though, only the first three on the SMS.
