Sleepless in 8-bit Warp Zone

Hello, I heard of this site through  RetroZone - RetroUSB.

I have been a NES - 8 Bit gamer since the 80's, spent alot of angry nights trying to defeat Mike Tyson and getting far in Rygar then starting all over again. Though these many of frustrating nights happened, I still find myself going back to these games and playing them again. The new games that are released these days are great as well but I find myself always going back to my 8 bit console with a sigh of relief.

I have started a new project for myself.  I am trying to learn how to take a ReproPak from RUSB and learn how to take a rom and make my own cartridge to play on my system. There is some really cool translations done for some of my famicom games as well as really fun Homebrews I have played.  I have a slight idea how it works and motivated to take the steps to learn. I noticed the homebrew forums and started reading those already. Which is the reason I decided to join.

I have also been reading from this site http://bobrost.com/nes/

I hope I can work this one out and learn what I have to do here. Any help would be much apreciated.

Thank you,

Khy

  • Welcome to the site.
  • Thank You, more I read the more I am lost but I am trying to keep it together haha I think it will take a bit of time. Soldering isnt to intimidating, i use to solder all my my mods for systems myself. The proccess of building a cart is the trouble.
  • Welcome to NA, how did you find out about RetroUSB? I would have never known about it if not for NA and nesforums.

  • Welcome to NA!!
  • I think a year or maybe two years ago I was searching for stuff for NES on google. I way trying to find mods and NES shell Replacements and stuff and I accidently ran into it. I was really into it but for the past few years i was very saturated in my job and I have just recently come up for some air.

So here I am, going for what I wanted to do years ago. Retro USB reignited my  hope on learning how to do this and for more people working on translations and Homebrew. It was providence.

  • Thank you everyone for the Welcome

  • Thank You, Just reading through the Repro thread trying to get a good education on how this works. Awesome thread.

    Social D!
  • Welcome! FYI the Bob Rost stuff isn't that good. It doesn't play on actual hardware. Check out the Nerdy Nights tutorials in the homebrew section. If you are too intimidated with assembly, someone over at NESDev.com wrote a c compiler, but regardless, I'd recommend just learning assembly.
  • Awesome, thanks for the advice WhatULive4. I will definetly start reading up on that tutorial. I figure it might take me a while to get a good grasp on this but all this is for fun so I am greatful on any advice I can get.
  • I wish someone would finish a translation for Akira-famicom, Man its been soooo many years since I been crunching on that one. Anyone know anything on that translation progress or is it truly dead?

  • Hello, I'm back!
  • 1 year later, heh. Did you ever get anything working?
  • Hey 3Gen! Thank you for the knowledge that has bestowed upon me by you and other resources you have pointed into my direction. Life brought a storm which brought me to a new job and was on the radio at nights for a while. Things are finally slowing down now and again so I am back on it with a fresh mind and a better understanding than when you first started showing me the ropes.

How you been 3Gen and what is new in the world of 3 Gen Games?
  • I think the trick to Rygar, is to run by the enemies without trying to kill them.
