I (finally) got a Wii!

Last "current" gen console I got was an PS1. Now within the past 4 months, I bought a PS3, and now finally a Wii. I bought the PS3 when the Red Wii came out and thought to myself, "one console is enough and I'll take the one with the blu-ray player", but after seeing the red Wii's go out of stock after what seemed like EVERY retailer selling Wii's with a $75 gift card during Christmas, I was kind of upset I never grabbed one.

I've passed on a couple white/black Wii's around the $100-$120 price point because I figure if I'm gonna get a Wii, I should have got the red, 25th anniversary one. Kept my eyes open and lucked out and got a CIB at a decent price (although it took an eBay dispute). And finally, the 25th Anniversary Mario Edition Red Wii is mine.

But being new to this, I know nothing about what seems like an unbelievable amount of games (many which seem to be absolute junk) nor do I know how much I should spend on them. I'm a slow gamer, so my backlog is already at least a year long, but what attracts me to the Wii is the catalogue of fun, quick, games that don't require hour long sessions.

I've done a bit of searching on the forum of Wii game reco's, but figured there's some more stuff that's come out and prices have probably dropped a bit. Anything worth picking up at a decent price? I guess this could count as a Collector's Corner thread, anything worth picking up at a decent price to have in your collection? Don't know if it's been long enough to have any HTF games?

I figure all first-party Nintendo games, but any suggestions on others?

I played Boom Blox and loved it. That's about all I can think of, hah.

Comments

  • I was a first-party only guy. By far the best games are Mario Galaxy 1 and 2. I still can't decide which is better, but they are the best Mario games ever made.
  • Zing, when the last post I read for the night has your picture, I have to sleep with the light on, it really creeps me out.
  • Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, especially 2

    New Super Mario Bros

    Zelda: Twilight Princess

    Donkey Kong Country Returns

    Punch Out

    Kirby's Epic Yarn

Metroid Other M (story's lame like everyone says but fuck it, the game play is superb)

    Sin and Punishment

    Mario Kart Wii

    Mad World

    Super Paper Mario

Heard great things about Monster Hunter Tri, Little Kings Story and No More Heroes 1 and 2 but have yet to play them.

  • Donkey Kong Country Returns is a real masterpiece, no lie. Be sure to use teh wiimote + nunchuck control configuration, the game plays MUCH better that way than just using the sideways wiimote.
  • If you like Boom Blox then you will dig the sequel, Boom Blox: Bash Party. It's even better than the first. House of the Dead: Overkill is a killer rail shooter, suited really well for the Wii. I have also heard good things about the new You Don't Know Jack game for the Wii.

Do you have a Wii MotionPlus? If so, then you have gotta grab Red Steel 2. I tried it once, and it was a lot of fun. Zelda Skyward Sword is also going to use Wii MotionPlus, so it's good to have.

  • I reccommend excite truck if you can find it, Its fun, cool, and lets you play Mp3's off an SD card to race to
  • Some good nominations in this thread, but New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Super Mario Galaxy 2 are absolute must owns IMO.

And I'll nominate a sleeper, Little King's Story. It's basically an adventure / city creator / RPG all rolled into one and surprisingly addictive.
  • Buy an external hard drive, hack the wii, and download ALL the wii games for a 100$.
  • Golden eye and tetris party on the Wii ware are my favorites.both play online.
  • Get the top 10-15 games that people have mentioned here, beat them (or play to your heart's desire) and then sell it!
  • monster hunter tri is pretty awesome
  • I love the Fire Emblem games, I have played the crap out of both the gamecube and wii versions.
  • I really like Wario Ware Smooth Moves too, but no one else seems to
It's kindof a party game, but with a story mode for single player. Has lots of retro throwbacks in it too.

Also, I found the starwars lego game (The complete saga) a good buy, you should be able to get it super cheap, and it's quite good (and long) you get a lot of game for your buck.
  • MODD IT !!! , playing nes and snes games on it is the best thing IMO that you can do to a wii

agreeed, but i much prefer the ones for gba
killed sacred stones realy bad... every character max level, all secret characters, 6 characters with every stat maxed, 4 characters with 15 movement, 5 others with between 7-12

  • My first response was going to be to hack it but I was afraid to post it because most video game forums are super anti piracy and I would be flamed off the board. Seems like that has already been covered though so nothing to see here.

    Then mod it.

SNES, NES, and Genesis emulation is nice on it. The speeds aren't 100%, but close enough. I think the NES actually runs much faster on it, though I might have it backwards.
  • I'm going to say for your own safety to NOT look to professional review sites because for years they were jaded asses looking to stab at Nintendo for waggle and no HD, then it morphed into desperation for anything good and shitty mediocrity like The Conduit got amazingly over played up.

For starters, you can't even entirely trust the stuff from Nintendo anymore. Mario Kart unless you are into the most boring tracks of the series and some really lame dirtbikes may not be for you. Smash Bros is a pretty big downgrade over the GC version as it had input vs reaction time lag, adventure mode is awful, and the little gimmes are canned pseudo copies of the GC. But then there are fantastic things like the Mario's, Kirby, and Metroid. Zelda depends on taste, I thought it sucked, the GC version which is the real copy plays better oddly enough.

With third parties Capcom as dirty and jerky as they are did fine work with their RE titles, Zack and Wiki, and others. EA did a great job with a few things like MOH Heroes 2. Namco in all their advertising incompetence not making people know the good games they did you may never know how good Klonoa and The Muncables really is. Also I'd look into Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings, it's a fantastic game that uses the Wii control well, also it's 2 games in 1, it also uniquely has the old DOS SCUMM engine game Fate of Atlantis!
  • I'm just going to reinforce the love for Little King's Story, might be the best Wii game for me. You should really really check it out.

Also Lost in Shadow (Tower of Shadow in the US I guess, can't remember the correct name) and A boy and his Blob are nice plataformers that you should get if you ever see em cheap.

I really really dig Excite Trucks and Excite Bots, they are really fun racers.

And Sin and Punishment 2 is quite the addictive shooter. I can also reccomend the Trauma Center games (especially Second Opinion on Multiplayer) for some good times.

Get the Konami Rebirth games on Wii Ware, they rule. Cave story is incredible too, there are some others games on Wii Ware that are quite cool, just can't remember them
  • I saw Sega & Sonic all stars racing in the discount bin for $20. It is a really solid racer believe it or not and the drifting is a blast.
  • Mario Galaxy 2

    Kirby Epic Yarn

Madworld (dirt cheap and good mindless fun)

    and Muramasa: The Demon Blade

I really liked the gamecube zelda, and smash bro's better than their wii equivalents if you haven't already got a gamecube just get yourself a memory card and controller and add those too
  • Yeah, I already have a GameCube (and the Zelda games for GC) as well as Melee.

I'll definitely pick up Boom Blox and it's sequel. It seems like first party games are never cheap. No worries. I have been playing Super Mario Bros. Wii though and I frickin' love it.

I'll check out Little King's Story for sure.

Trying to keep my eyes open for some more remotes. $36 on Amazon isn't bad, but it looks like eBay if I'm patient enough can be found for $25-$30ish.

Thanks for the help guys! Pretty stoked. So was my girlfriend! Hah!

My (very limited) morals prevent me from doing this.  I just can't bring myself to do that.

  • I thought the whole reason we're collectors is because we like playing classics on original hardware? I don't need or want my Wii hacked to emulate every NES / SNES / Genesis game ever, I'll just grab it off my shelf if I want to play it that bad.

Not every one has complete sets of NES/SNES/Genesis on hand lol.  I use my Wii and PS3 emulators to try games before I purchase them.
