FS/Auction threads

I am an active member on a car forum, stlsubaru.com.  I am an active vendor there to sell car parts and offer discounts on OE Subaru parts off the manufacture suggested retail.  I joined the forum to sell to the St. Louis community, but also participate in the forum activities like I do here.

Well my point is, just recently you cannot view For sale or vendor threads unless you are an active member with a minimum post count of 30 posts.  Yes, this does effect me directly since I pay to be a vendor there, but I also like it because it weeds out the people trying to just make a buck.

I would like to see something like this here on NA, what are your guys/gals thoughts on the subject?

  • i like this idea too, i think the only problem is they could always just suck it up for 30 posts (not that hard to do) then just vendor away forever... perhaps it be like a monthly thing?
  • There should certainly not be a restriction to view items, people shouldn't have to post if they want to buy something.

Personally I would rather people post if they actually have something to say/want to post, not to try to make some sort of quota.
  • I guess my point being to try and avoid having people troll the forum only to see what is for sale, or just coming here to sell stuff. Not saying this is the answer for NA or if there is an answer, but trying to get more emphesis on this being a social network.
  • well doesn't have to be a post count, how bout a waiting period before being able to use the BST forum? 2 weeks? a month? lets you learn who these people are before dealing with them.
  • I see the point, but hasn't NintendoAge always been a little different because all are welcome and there have been no restrictions like many other forums. Yes it causes some users who come only to sell, but don't most of them disappear when they realize Ebay gets them more $$$?

Just giving a counter argument, I'm on the fence about this myself.

I agree with you too paul, we have a very welcoming forum and I would like to keep it that way.  Might not be a good way to counter this.
  • i've noticed lately more sellers with never even posting an intro, like the first post is their sell thread, i guess it's me but doesn't seem right, but then again, being known in the community definately helps your sale thread more than a newb
  • Yeah I like the idea of maybe a two week period before a person can post a thread in the FS / WTB forum. That would not affect their ability to purchase something, as they could still view threads. And it won't lead to people spamming the forums to pad their post count either.
  • I dont see the big deal about people signing up just to sell stuff. It gives all of us first shot at what they have. If its junk, the thread quickly dies and we probably dont hear from them again.
