the Chiller don't know what the hell i'm doing thread

So recently bought chiller, i've tried hooking up the zapper in both ports.,

I can get the game started, but I shoot everything on the damn screen, but nothing seems to happen.

Each time I shoot I see little red dots feintly everywhere, and maybe more of them each time.

The score at the bottom doesn't change.  And I run out of time... Game over.   I can hear the zapper sound effect.

Duck hunt works fine, using a CRT TV, and I'm using a real NES, so that's not it either.

Either I don't know how the hell to play the game.  Or I don't know what the hell i'm doing.  Help.

I would expect to see something explode, maybe

  • Weird...maybe something wrong with the actual game?
  • Try pulling the trigger just before it makes the sound. You should see the screen flash repeatedly as if you were shooting a machine gun. Then aim your gun at one of the circles flashing, and feather the trigger out and in, again don't make the sound go off. I was able to do well using that method.

Oh and the zapper only works in port 2.

but isnt chiller a 2 player light gun game? so it would work in both correct?

I am doing what your saying, screen is flashing rappidly but nothing happens, even tried putting the gun right up to the screen.

I'm using a top-loading original nes 2 and an orange zapper, gun, any idea if this is part of the issue?

  • Have you tested your zapper with a different game? I have one that doesn't shoot, but still regisiters when you pull the trigger.

Ah you know what, I guess one of the silly options before you start the game turns on 2 zappers mode. In 1 player mode the zapper only works in port 2 though.
  • I have the same problem. I have an orange gun and a toaster. Actually PMd Pat the NES Punk about it, and he wrote back that the controls are a bit wonky. You have to aim a little off. At least thats what he did, doesn't seem to work for me unfortunately.

Yes, duck hunt, hogans alley, any other light game you can think of works perfectly

Well we are both using an Orange Gun

    Could that possibly be it?

I'm probably the only person crazy enough to buy a gray zapper just to find out, I'll let you know Sammy....

  • I tried the gray gun, a toaster, and also AV instead of RF

    No luck
  • If I were to guess maybe its the TV, but I have no clue
  • So pulled out a TV out of the attick hooked it all up and guess what...works

Silly thing is that both TV's are very similar other than the one that works is smaller and seems to have brighter colors.

I guess it's possible I could mess with my TV settings and see if that would have any effect.

Anyone know if Chiller works with the PowerPak?
  • Weird. I've tried with two TVs (one is a late 90s 32" and the other is early 00s 14") and a monitor (all CRT), none worked for me. The Monitor is an Commodore monitor from 1984 or something. Adjusted the brightness, colors, everything, but nothing would make Chiller respond to the zapper. Duck Hunt etc work without any issues. What TV did you use that worked with Chiller?
  • Kinda odd. I have an ancient Sharp tv from the early 80's I play all my old games on, and it handles Chiller fine. The only thing I can guess would be to adjust the brightness and black levels on the TV, since the zapper works using light detection.
  • lcd tv's typicly dont work with zapper games. Neither do some crt tvs (mostly the hd kind and 100hz etc)

Mine is none of those, it should work by all means
  • Oh and it works for every other gull darn zapper game I have.
  • Sounds like your crt has input lag for some reason O.o...odd.

Your probably right, I really don't know what that means

Chiller is the only thing that doesn't work as far as zapper games go.

My high score on Duct Hut is pretty high

  • No wait it cant be input lag...duckhunt worked on that tv? It might just be brightness.
  • From what I understand, the number of possible targets on the screen can make the game more sensitive. The boxes around the objects when you pull the trigger flash in sequence so the game knows which target you hit. When there are only a few targets, such as with Duck Hunt, the timing window can be larger. When there are many objects, such as with Chiller, the timing is more strict.
  • I think Chiller falls in the so bad it's good category, it's horribly funny
