Majora's Mask not the cart the mask

It was a prize in Nintendo Power. Second place prize winner got this mask and the game cartridge. According to the paperwork "approximate retail value of the prize package is $570.00". I assume the value of the cartridge was $70 making the mask a $500 retail item at that time.

  • these would be super easy to make out of clay. My gay brother is a pottery major and could easily make a bunch of these...I remember seeing these in Nintendo Power a few years backs.

  • Yeah, I remember seeing the advertisement myself. That particular mask, btw, is the Mask of Truth image . As for value, I don't think I'd sell one (if I had one to sell, that is) for any less than $400-$500, or maybe slightly more with that letter.
  • Ha! That's pretty freaking cool.

Not sure what it would be worth, but there's got to be some crazy Zelda nut who's willing to spend a lot on it.

    What was 1st place?
  • is this yours?
  • It looks like some high school kids pottery class project...
  • Very strange. I would probably be pretty bummed if I won and got that for a prize though.
  • I just saw this add in an old NP yesterday, it looked as though there were several different masks awarded to several different "second place" winners. Can anyone confirm or deny?
  • paperwork says v140 of Nintendo Power. Anyone have that issue?
  • That's an awesome mask, but I think the gay pottery major quote was funny as hell.
  • I am really not joking, he is a ceramics major, no joke...and I really think he is gay. Me and all my friends refer to him as gay brother in fact! I can see if he would be willing to make a few of these for me if anyone is interested.

  • I don't care what any of you say. That is pretty sweet. As far as value, not a clue. If its for sale though I'd make an offer.

Not sure if I will sell it or hold on to it. Still trying to determine what it might would be worth.  I've gotten a few interested parties but no one has made an offer.

A pottery major? If I understanding this correctly, did he go to University/College to study pottery?
  • Yes he did. He has a masters degree in ceramics and is a professor and the University of North Dakota.

A Professor of Ceramics? I've heard it all now lol. Is the University of North Dakota a respected University in the USA? I bet the lectures there are a riot, ranging from prehistoric pottery to modern armitage shanks toilet bowls.

NGD, I'd also be questioning his sexual orientation if I knew him.

  • Pretty much every college has a ceramics program in the US. Most people just don't realize it. He makes a pretty good living as well, over 50k and and has summers off. Plus is doing something he actually enjoys, so kudos to him I guess.

  • I'd consider becoming a prof. of ceramics for those attributes tbh, the biggest one being actually enjoying what you do. Thats worth 10k a year on its own IMO.

We just need to find you a university post now NGD, Proffesor of NES at Havard with time already served.
  • I took 2 ceramics classes in high school.  The teacher was a hippie from the 1960's, by far, the  coolest teacher I ever had.  If you wanted to make pipes or bowls for smoking pot, he told us to make it look like an oil lamp, or sometihng else, so he didn't get in trouble.  I loved that class!
  • Professor NGD, lol! That would be a fun class, and spelling wouldn't count! image

I took art classes all 4 years of high school as well and won a few awards for my work. Before my brother moved away we had 3 kilns in my garage, 2 potter wheels, all the tools, and more class than you could carry.

I actually was more into enameling (jewelry making) than I was pottery. I still do it from time to time as well. Boy this thread has strayed far off topic, sorry Adam.

I'm looking at the ad right now.  The prizes were:

    3rd place: 50 NP T-shirts
2nd place: 1 of 5 different masks, plus a copy of Majora's Mask (the ad shows the Deku and Zora masks, which look 100 times better than the Mask of Truth).
1st place: 1-of-a-kind Zora fish bone guitar, which actually looks really cool.  I wonder if that thing is still floating around anywhere...

The seller originally told me he had his pick of the masks and this is the one he wanted. How many second place prizes were there? Was there more than 1?

Well there was five, hence the five different masks.  That's weird that they let people pick which mask they want though, since eventually someone wouldn't get to pick.  I would assume the masks would be Truth, Deku, Zora, Goron, and Majora's.
