Huge LaserDisc haul!

Well, haven't posted anything lately in this part of the forum. But today I got something in the mail I feel like sharing with you guys.

I got 4 packages containing 129 laserdisc movies! Hopefully the player I bought with the movies (Pioneer CLD-1750) will arrive tomorrow. I got it all for 2400 NOK, or about $444.

Here are some pictures:

^Finally sorted everything out alphabetically. Took me a couple of hours.

^For those of you who don't know how big these are, here is a size comparison with a normal CD/DVD. A laserdisc is 12" in diameter.

  • i have 2 laserdisc movies i'm selling, if interested (though i don't know what shipping to norway would be): Uncle Buck and Star Trek Generations. PM me if interested.
  • I love the Laserdisc. I bought a player several years ago when a movie rental store went out of buisness. I got he player for $9.99 and several movies for $1.99 each. One of the best purchases I ever made.
  • Laserdiscs were amazing tech at the time. Loved it.
  • You didn't get Tron, did you? That is the LD I want most.

Seems a lot more people are getting in to the Laserdiscs. I've been on a slight kick for several years with them. Recently picked up nearly everything on my wanted list at a garage sale.
  • Nope, didn't get Tron in the lot. A great movie, I might import it later. Laserdisc were never officially released in Norway, so everything is import. That is also why laserdisc is rare to come by here, few people imported it.

The seller only stated it were 100 movies, didn't mention any titles or anything else. So what I got was a surprise. There are a few "gaps" I need to fill in. I got two copies of Terminator 2, but didn't get the first movie. I also now have Friday the 13th 1 and 3, så need to get at least the 2nd movie as well. Hope some of the missing titles isn't expensive.
  • My parents collected Laserdisc for many years, and acumilated alot. I used to randomly pick one out of the many stacks and watch them. They got them all from thrift stores for next to nothing, probably like. 50 cents each. The best part was that I randomly found some porn in the stacks of discs. I didn,t know that they made porn for laserdisc. I was like 12 or 13 at the time so I did not complain.
  • You know me im always interested in ANY horror flicks u have,, def. hit me up prob the biggest collector of these things on here ,, got over 300 of em right now and am always looking for good flicks so hit me up!

  • congrats on the sweet laserdisc collection. I am actually getting a laserdisc player this weekend because i bought my first laserdisc (a rare copy of "The Halloween Tree") and i want to convert it to dvd.
  • Very sweet man, I just started collecting Laser Discs myself, just won a nice lot of 25 off ebay, can't wait for them to get here.
  • well this is a good sign that the laserdiscs are booming,,, Justin how much did you pay for that lot of 25,,, hopefully not to much,, remember u have my number always hit me up before you buy a lot dont want you getting screwed.

  • did you get salo: 120 days of sodom? because i think for ld that might be one of the bigger dollar ones still, at one point it was going for as high as $1000. totally awful movie. but pretty controversial. check and see if you've got that one
  • Nah haha it doesnt go for $1000 it all matters on what verison you have,,, you can get one if you look for around $50 hahah, idk where you saw one that was $1000, I knew one came out in 1979 which makes it one of the oldest laserdiscs,,, but idk where you saw that it was $1000,, just curious haha

When you mention it, I actually found something weird that might be porn. In the lot I got there is a movie called "The Girl with the heart shaped tattoo" which also says "Adult content, rated X. Do not sell to minors." I'm not familiar with the rating system in the US, but it sure sounded like vintage pr0n. Haven't tried it yet, though.

I'm not interested in selling anything, so have to disappoint you there. I got a lot of different horror films in the lot, but the ones I were most exited over were: A Nightmare on Elm Street 2, Friday the 13th 1 and 3. I want to mainly try to complete those series now of the different horror films I got.

Also want to correct the total price I paid for the movies and the player. I actually just paid 1500 NOK (or about $279) for the stuff and another 900 NOK (~ $167) in shipping.
I want to import movies, but the shipping cost is going to get insane. Everything in Norway is import, and it is rare to come by, so eBay is my best bet.

I'm not sure if it is the player or the discs, but sometimes the movie just skips forward. It's been less frequent after several hours of use. My guess it is just the mechanical parts that have become stiff and runs more an more smooth again. It have been stored in a basement or something for a few years.

2003-4, after all the fakes came about, it drove the price up, i know at least one sold for a grand, but others were going for 4-500 around that time. the first run of the dvd was going for $6-700. it was going for so much because the dvd's were pulled off the line during production. the first run of the ld is worth so much because it was the criterion collection, probably taken out of it now. for whatever reason people thought it was such an abomination of a movie that they seemingly didnt want it in production, then all the fakes came..they just in the last few years started doing dvd's of it again, and i think they did a remaster somehow because the original acetate they used for the ld/dvd were fucked up...pretty crazy movie, pasolini paid for it with his life
  • Good luck getting those friday the 13ths dude,, took me over 2 years and around 500 bucks to get em all so its gonna b a hunt for you,,, ummm I see a couple of Critieons on ebay for 75 bucks hahaha,,, I have a copy in my collection and if its worth what you said haha I should sell that shit didnt think it was that much money as they seem to be only going for around $75 bucks or so on ebay which is about twice as much as I paid for mine when I started hahaha,, But if you ever wanna talk about laserdiscs haha I can talk for hours haha i collect em more than Video games haha

  • my goodwill had some pretty cool laser disk movies like the god father 1,2&3 for $2 & ghost. i would have snatched it

if i could find the player.
  • Well, not sure if it were a good deal afterall. Got the player yesterday, it bit the dust today. Most likely the shipping were too rough for the poor player... Probably impossible to find a player locally, only option is shipping by post. Really a shame as it were perfect for my use.

The player doesn't recognize the discs anymore. I've spoken with a couple of enthusiasts, and they claim it is only the laser-head that have become misaligned after the shipping. Hope I manage to re-calibrate it.
  • keep in mind that it was going for that in 2003-2004, when criterion was re-releasing the collection in dvd format. because the dvd's were pulled from production, it caused a spike in price, as well as demand for the original criterion ld release. on average i'd say it was going for 500 at that point, with the original dvd selling for $750 when it would come up. but the market was flooded with tons of fakes at that point, and because of the fakes, it actually made the original more valuable.

i remember seeing a salo tapestry, something screenprinted on ebay and i think it was going for $2000, so all the profit was squeezed out of that film between the years of 2002 and 2004. its a very niche thing and not many people have even heard of the movie, much less have a desire to seek it out. im sure theres others from the criterion collection that are valuable, but at that point, that horrible movie was going for ridiculous money. visually, the movie is pretty incredible, with the architexture and surroundings, its just a shame that its such a horrible film.
  • I remember the Criterion Collection version of Salo on DVD was going for several hundred dollars as recently as a few years back still, so it doesn't surprise me that the LD version would be sky high too.

I read 120 Days Of Sodom around 8 years ago, and I was amazed on how extreme Marquis De Sade got; the movie is actually toned down a lot!

    Nice pickup mang.
