Is this a proto? What is it worth?

Hey Guys,

This day is absolutly crazy, I made some amazing founds today. Here is one of them. Can someone tell me if it is a proto? If yes what is it worth? Sorry for the bad pictures I have at the moment only my cell phone cam.

In front of the cart is written: Zelda 2 The Adventure of Link and down below: Sample Game Pak By Nintendo at top of the cart is written: NES-P-AL.

The cart is heavier than a normal Zelda 2 cart.

Hope someone can help me,thanks

  • Where did you find it? this certainly looks like other Nintendo protos I've seen here recently but I'm no expert. No way to open it up eh?
  • Yeah, if you could get it open that would tell us a lot more.
  • I dont know much about prots never seen one in real. I have opend it and seems to be a proto, hers a pic. One the board is written 1987 Nintendo NES-Skeprom-01 and there is written by hand on two chips: XL2 PRG and XL2 CHR

  • amazing find! now check for difference in gameplay
  • April fools?
  • No man, this is no joke!

  • Awesome!! Where did you find this?
  • This day was really amazing, I was walking through the town and I saw a old toy shop (there I bought my NES games as child) I saw that this shop will be closed soon so I walked in and looked a little bit around they have no NES games for sale since many years. I talked a little bit with the old owner of the shop and told him that I bought her my first NES games nearly 20 years ago with my parents. He was lucky to talk about old times and so on. Abrupt he told me to wait and go in the back of his shop. As he came back I cant belive what I saw. He brought some NEW really NEW minty as hell small boxed games and a complet NEW Ice Climber Set and this proto he told me that this all was over years in his stock, after the NES time had end he sold new systems and games and he tought no one would be interested in this old stuff, I asked him about the proto but he couldn't rember where he comes from he told me that the shop was in the early 90's not only a toy shop it was also a second hand shop and he thinks it is from this time. The end of that story is I bought the hole lot.

  • I checked the game, and its a pal b version it works on my pal b NES, at the first look seems to be no difference to a normal Zelda 2 but I only played for about 5 minutes. I bought it only a few houres ago so I didn't have time to play it, I dont know if there will be any differences to the normal Zelda 2.
  • Well congratulations on a great find. This will be a day you will never forget.
  • Well, does anyone have a price estimate?
  • I'd guess at least twice as much as a normal proto, perhaps more. Seeing as Zelda test gets as much as 3x the normal test cart price of $200, I'd say this could be $300+ seeing as most protos are in the Benjamin range.
  • I just made a post about one of these a couple of days ago.

Mine is a Lunar Pool game though so no matter what it won't be worth anything close to a Link sample game pak. From what I've been told these were cartridges given to game testers so they shouldn't be any different than the regular game. Although I've never opened mine up to compare.
  • Hm, interesting to hear. Do you know more about this sample game paks? I never seen one befor. I dont know if it is the same game as a normal zelda 2, I think its possible that there are some differences, because on the board is written 1987 Nintendo at this time was Zelda 1 new in stores Zelda 2 was 1989 new in stores. I dont think that Nintendo have a complett ready to sell Zelda 2 at the same time they have puplished the first part. A other thing I dont understand is why is this cart heavier than a normal one?

What do you guys think is this cart worth?
  • There is a slight possibility that there are some differences... Now that I think about it...there is a screenshot in the manual that depicts the player being at Level 8 for all three attributes (Attack, Life, and Magic) and only needing 4000 experience points to get an extra life. For those of you that have played the game, you might recall that figure is, in fact, 9000 experience points to get the extra life. That is a definite possibility.

As for the copyright date on the board being '87, Nintendo may have just had the boards produced in '87, and they may not have used that particular board until '88 or potentially '89.

As for why the cart is heavier...it uses a larger board than the standard release (the standard release's board is half the size of the proto's).

As for how much it's worth...well...you already have my input, heh heh image .
  • Thanks for the info, I think if I have a little time I will play it and check it for differences.
