Coolness.  Was this problem an overall mapper problem or just something related to using savestates?

    Save states only.

did your previous mappers somehow cause these games not to work?  Or were they never working to begin with?
  • ^^the games don't work with latest official mappers, nor with loopy's. Great, a couple of games more off the list! Thanks for the great work Kalle.
  • Kalle, I just tried the mappers. Cybernoid works, but Karnov has the same problems. I'm using bunnyboy's beta mappers 1.35b2, loopy's latest mappers, and your mappers. Maybe it is a PAL-NTSC thing? I also tried changing the mirroring setting to vertical with Nestopia.

I have no idea what could be wrong. It works without a hitch on my NTSC NES. Please make sure that the startup screen of the mappers says "VER I.IV".
  • the only loopy mapper that fixed stuff was the fds mapper. His other mappers actually made things worse / indifferent. His mappers were causing dragon fighter to randomly freeze on my system
  • Awesome I can now have a good fix of Karnov. It worked first try for me.
  • Thank you so much for this, it's awesome.
  • For some reason, I get glitches in many games (Ninja Gaiden 3 cutscenes for example, and the rest I mentioned in a PM).

I have tried both 1.34 and 1.35b2 mappers, both with and without loopy's mappers, and I still get this problem when using savestate mappers 1.4 (I verified the startscreen said I.IV). When I change back to savestate mappers 1.3.2, the glitches disappear.

If someone has this problem, please report it. I'll stay with the previous version of the mappers, that works well for me.
  • hahaha I just tried it ninja gaiden 3 cutscene half of the graphics are random tiles...and then it just locks up

Is there a place on kalle's awesome website where people can download older mapper releases incase of something major like this?

When you say you are using all of those mappers, do you know that you are actually not?

Each of those mapper packs contain some of the same mappers. If you install savestate mappers and THEN install bunnyboys mappers, you will no longer have savestate because bunnyboys mappers will overwrite the savestate ones.

If you install thefox's savestate mappers, you are replacing mapper 00, 01, 02, 03, 04, and 07. So for the games that use those mappers, you are ONLY using thefox's mappers. You will no longer be using loopys or bunnyboys.

And if you have the same version of Karnov as I do, the header for it is wrong. For some reason the ROM has it using mapper 206 when it should be using 04....which is why you are not getting karnov to work. I just fixed the ROM I had for Karnov, and it works perfect now with savestate mapper 04

I have added an older version download there now.

But I think I've fixed the problem (MMC3 really is a complete and utter bitch to get right...). Try this version (only contains MMC3): http://thefox.aspekt.fi/mmc3.zip

If you can try it with more games than just NG3 it would be appreciated, but not required. If it works fine for you I'll update the package.

  • I have made a rule of thumb for myself. When installing mappers on a fresh CF start with Retrozone, then install Loppy's overtop replacing Retrozones only if they are newer, same for any random mapper fixes found on the interent, then finish up with Kalle's mappers.

One nice thing about Windows 7 is when replacing files it will tell you which one is newer always go with the newer of course. Any other OS just keep an eye on the date and time the file was created and go with the newer.

I have never had a problem, I also use GoodNES ROM sets unless they are new releases.

When I thought of using all of them together, I realized files replace others, so I could lose benefits from one and other set. I thought that using them in sequence (bunnyboy's, then loopy's, then thefox's) I had a chance of getting most features, and it worked. For example, I got all of the games repaired in bunnyboy's beta mappers, plus Batman ROTJ working, plus savestates. I appeared to have not lost anything, and winning all the benefits of each (that's why I recommend installing the mappers in sequence in the PP thread). I'll try to repair Karnov as you have said.

The potential problem of losing a feature because of replacing files from one set or the other could be solved if bunny, loopy and thefox could release a single set with all the benefits.

EDIT: everything works now, Karnov included. Thanks!

I would consider that Bunny is probably caught up in other ventures.
If we all got together and made a master set of mappers using all that we have collected, weeded out and tested we could always propose a new complete mapper build to Bunny to post on his Retrozone.
  • I found loopies mappers actually caused games to get worse excluding his fds mapper. The loopy fds mapper fixed fds games. But his other mappers made other game stop working. With loopies mappers dragon fighter would randomly freeze/unfreeze..

Anyway kalle I downloaded your file will test it in a short while
  • ^^are there any other games that you noticed to be worse, besides Dragon Fighter? Specifically how are they worse?
  • I've updated the package with MAP04.MAP from the ZIP is posted earlier... hopefully this fixes the MMC3 problems: http://kkfos.aspekt.fi/downloads/save-state-mappers-1.4.1.zip

One thing I have to say about the Karnov case: if the game doesn't display my save state mapper menu in the beginning, then my mapper updates will not do anything to fix any of those games. All of the mappers provided in the save state mappers package show the menu.
  • Great work thefox! These are great!

I dunno I sorta just played dragon fighter got annoyed and removed loopies mappers.  Loopies mappers didn't seem to make anything better except for the fds so I just use his awesome fds mapper and nothing else
  • Okay I installed the new mapper pack. The intro cutscene of ninja gaiden 3 now no longer has garbled graphics.....but.....it always freezes the system during the cutscene! Back to the old mappers I go!
  • No problems here just played both Ninja Gaiden 3 and Dragon fighter using 1.4.1 if you having this many problems then I would start checking your ROM's maybe they are corrupted.

my roms are fine genius the game routinely froze at the same part of the intro cutscene of ninja gaiden 3 using the 1.4.1 mappers but with 1.3.3 the SAME ROM runs with zero issues.

With 1.3.3 the only game that's not running right is kirbys adventure....which I have 1 US cart and 2 jp carts of so whatever.

Also dragon fighter never gave me problems with kalles mappers it was loopys mappers that were messing it up

  • I checked, and Drakon is right, NG3 freezes the NES during cutscenes (the first one, and also when you meet Foster).

Does the game run if you skip the cutscenes?

I recall when the Powerpak first came out there were people that had problems with games and grafical problems, SMB3 had the little white lines. It was noted back then that not all revisions of the NES has this issue, the PowerPak was modded and then revised to compensate for this. My original PowerPak worked fine on 3 out the 7 NES consoles I had at the time. I sold that PowerPak some time ago and the gentleman that bought it had no issues either.

What revision of the PowerPak do you have? Is it an original first run without the mod or the new revision?

P.S. thank you Drakon for noticing my higher intellect, sometimes being a genius is hard when some people around you have a simple mind in comparison, I was just trying to help you. I guess I'm just the lucky one with the miracle PowerPak then, because I'm having no problems with these games.

Yes it does (at least until the Foster part, I didn't check further). On the bright side, Kirby's Adventure has correct colors now.
  • I never had issues with the colours in kirbys adventure. I bought my powerpak very recently (less than a year ago)
