Are NES collections insurable?

I just went through most of the posted collections, and I thought to myself if these are insurable against god forbid anything that could happen to them? (theft, fire, etc) It would have to be something like agreed upon value insurance. But even then, would that be any consolation?

  • It's tough with collectibles but not impossible. You need a written appraisal from an expert. Problem is I can't think of anyone that would be a certified expert in used NES games. Also, the other way to prove value is to have dated receipts. Impossible for a large collection. Really, for collectibles, it varies from insurance company to company. Contact a few and find out what's required. I'd imagine getting an appraisal might be as simple as finding someone with a business license in your home state that works in resale of used video games, and then giving them $50-$100 to swing by your place and sign off on an appraisal (you can download skeleton forms on the net) that you can keep in your fire safe. Also keep in mind you must keep appraisals updated, again it varies company to company, but I think most times it's a period of every five to ten years.
  • My homeowners policy will cover mine. You just have to document what all you have. Most homeowners policyies will cover them but you will have to add on every how much you think your collection is worth on in value, which will make your insure go up of course. Mine is covered for 30k I think.

  • Good idea people! My GF has been after me for years to get this done... hopefully, unlike NGD's GF, I hope she doesn't decide to take a visit here and read this thread!
