Shrink Wraped NES?

I just picked up what I think is a NIB NES console from a flea market for $100 that is sealed in shrink wrap. It's been about 17 years since I have seen a new Nintendo in the case at the K-Mart but so I wasn't sure but I have come to understand that consoles where never shrink wrapped, so why would this one be?  I also want to know if I should open it? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

  • I think you got played. I don't believe they ever came sealed, let alone shrinkwrapped. Ask on here before you go throwing around $100 to scammers dude.
  • Yeah, as far as I know, they never shrinkwrapped any of their consoles. The most I've seen is a piece of tape on the side of the box or something.
  • Th man at the local games store suggested that some one may have done it to protect the box, is this likely? What I'm worried about is if I open it I might ruin at really rare thing. Is their ant reason shrink wrapping would add to it's value?
  • Also is their any easy way to tell if the box was ever opened?
  • take a close look at the flap. look for wear and tear around the folds.
  • I did and I don't see any thing. I read that if you open a dark box like that the seam would turn white even if was only opened a few times.
  • Since these didn't come sealed from the factory, the only way to determine if it's new is to open it and take a look.    There were some Challenge Sets that used a Nintendo sticker to seal the box but not many.
  • Post good pics so we can see the seams of the box. That would help us out.

While that's definitely true for games, I'm not sure about console boxes.  If you were to ever resell this though, most people would want to be able to see the contents.  Removing the plastic wrap won't hurt the value at all in my opinion, except maybe if it ends up getting scuffed up or something.  I don't know what a mint CIB NES is worth, but I don't think that shrinkwrap adds any value to it since it's not original.  Nevertheless some pictures would help.

  • You guys convinced me, I opened it and found a gently used Nintendo with all it parts and manuals in a well persevered box.

    Thanks!
  • Imagine if that box was full of silent service carts does it come complete with all the plastic baggies?
  • Yea the only thing that was ever use was the Nintendo the power pack and RF switch.
