Chronological list of game release dates?

How much work goes into finding the release date of a game?  I know it really depends on the area, etc.. It seems most of the games are specific only to the release year, or perhaps month.  Is there any way to sort games (on the NES, primarily) by release date?  I figure it would be neat to look at the evolution of NES games.

So is there a list like that out there?

  • Yeah, that would be pretty cool to see. Hopefully there is something like that out there.
  • Here's a list I put together. Most of the titles only have the month and year, and unlicensed games only have the year.

Dr. Morbis list is in Volume 2, Issue 3 of the ezine from March 2008

  • The official Nintendo list of NES games has their release date down to the month. That should be good enough?

If their PDF isn't still on the nintendo.com site, I could upload it somewhere.
  • I have imported the official Nintendo PDF into a spreadsheet. It took a few minutes since the formatting wasn't perfect. I enjoyed some Ninja Gaiden tunes while I worked.

I just discovered that Nintendo also had a SNES version of their PDF, so maybe I will fix that one up as well.

Here is the NES list in Excel format:

I'd have to upload it to some sort of file sharing service, but here is a viewable version of it in the meantime:

    Awesome, thank you!

    Thank you too, DxS.

  • I uploaded an Excel format version to Mediafire. I don't normally share random files, so hopefully that file hosting site is reliable.

I remember them having lists of the games on their site, but didn't notice any release dates.  Did they remove that PDF from the site?  And if you don't decide to fix it up, let me know where I can find it

  • I am working on the SNES version now. I will seek out the official PDFs for the other platforms if they exist. They have the release dates down to the month.

Yes, it appears Nintendo deleted them from their website.

That's a shame.  I was able to find the list of original game boy games that used to be on their site through a simple google search.  I wish it went beyond the release month though.

  • They probably never had that info, other than in their distribution centre databases. Pinning down an exact shipment date on a particular game may have never crossed their mind. Or maybe the original database that created these PDFs just never had the day.

  • Well I know a lot of games back in the day, and still today, were just shipped out to stores with the instructions to sell them when they get them. So there is no actual release date, more like a "shipping to stores starting on XXX day" and since everyone doesn't get shipments at the same time, just the month are year are all you get for the release info.
  • I have created and uploaded a complete spreadsheet with all the info from all of the PDFs Nintendo had previously made available. N64, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Super NES, and NES.

    I created a new thread:
