Strange Intellivision problem.

I just picked up an intelly today, and it looks to be in excellent condition. The controllers and wires are crisp, and it came with a bunch of games/overlays/manuals, and intellivision game case. It powered on instantly, but I cannot for the life of me get past the title screen of any game. Could the controllers be simply not working? I'd like to play it tonight at my friend's house(which is where I am right now.)

  • Maybe there's a 'reset' button you have to hit. I don't really know anything about the Intellivisions but with the Atari 2600's on some games that's what you had to do. Just a stab in the dark...
  • Might not hurt to take the controllers apart and see if they need cleaning might be some build up of some sort. Never owned one so I am not much help, but when I had an Odyssey2 the player 1 controls wouldn't respond and I took it apart the best I could and cleaned it a bit which wasn't really that dirty and put it back together... apparently backasswards as up ended being down and so forth but it was responding so I took it apart a 2nd time and straightened it back out worked fine afterwards.

With you saying they are clean/crisp however makes me wonder if they did a surface clean and maybe not inside, or they were taken apart and maybe something wasn't plugged up correctly.
  • normally pressing any button will move it on from the title screen. try pressing the disc nice and firmly and pushing each of the buttons. If the controllers are just dirty, they almost never fail completely only some parts / buttons will fail so I wouldn't think it would be that,

What kind of intellivision did you get? Is it the little grey one (intv2) or the big brown one (original) the original one had the controllers plugged into the board, so if it's that type I would try opening the system itself (not the controllers) and make sure the little plug where the controllers are plugged into the board are clean and securely pushed in far enough. If it's an intv2, maybe make sure the controllers are pushed in all the way. You can try a genesis controller on the intv2 as well, the buttons don't line up properly, but it will still get you past the title screen and tell you if the controllers are your problem or not.

    Have you tried different games?
  • Sounds like the controllers. This is why getting an Intelly II is a better idea. I think the III also has removable controllers.
  • What Stan said.
  • Can you open the controllers? Maybe all it needs is just cleaning the contacts. I once purchased Atari 2600 keyboard controllers for a dollar because they didnt work. I opened the controllers and removed the metal tabs and cleaned the circuit board and they both work.
  • Thanks for the suggestions guys! Ok, I'm going to try cleaning the controllers first and see what happens. I'll post back once I've tried cleaning them.
