Might need a new 72 pin

Purchased a NES for $10 off craigslist.  I've cleaned it a ton and the games.  But anytime I get it playing there are small boxes that are all over the screen and make it hard to play.

Think I need a new 72 pin connector or just scrap it?

  • I would recommend trying to refurbish the pins that are already in the system! Get yourself an NES system cleaner (believe it or not, they really work), and a safety pin. Find some pliers, and bend the end of the point side of the safety pin to look like an L, and bend all the top pins (where the game goes in) inward, so they will make contact with the game better when it's in the system. Now, clean the crap out of it with the NES system cleaner, and then test it out.

  • Don't scrap it....boil the 72 pin connector....yes boil it on the stove with a little dishwashing detergent for about 10-15 min. Then put it on a baking sheet and POP it in the oven on low for 10 min. This will get her working no problem...also clean the board where the 72 pin connects.

wow...i've nver heard of this.  does this realy work?
  • ^ yes it works I have yet to have it fail, If the forums are searched there are many topics on this subject.
  • Well you learn something new every day! Thanks for the tip.
  • The NES pin connector is such a weird part. I've gotten pretty good at refurbishing the old ones.

Make sure you clean it off well with 91% rubbing alcohol and a toothbrush. Then get a clothes pin that you've crimped the end into a curve (like a question mark)and work on slightly lifting the pins. There are a million tutorials out there on how to do this so I won't go into detail.

I've come into possession of an NES that has changed some of my views on the 72 pin connector and that is I don't think you need to have a tight grip but that your pins need to be REALLY clean. This latest NES I bought has the regular old light grasp on the games and I mean it doesnt even feel like the carts are connecting and I'm getting 95% start up first time on all my games. The next NES I get before I refurb the pins I'm going to buy either the Eliminator or Naki and go to town cleaning the pins and not bend them. If that doesnt work I'll try the boiling technique. I think there's a way to get functionality out of these without bending the pins. How, is the question.
  • Boiling works. I strongly recommend against using any form of soap. It seems to do little other than leave soap residue on your connector.
