Japanese appliances and US Power outlets

Greetings!  I've ordered two Famiclones from Japan, and surely enough, they use the Japanese plugs.  I've done some research (Irate Gamer level), and saw that the Japanese plugs are identical to American plugs, and the voltage is about the same.  However, do I need a power converter to be completely safe with it?  If so, where could I find one?

Thanks in advance!

  • I use a power convertor on my famicom disk system ac adapter. I kinda recommend one because I heard stories that people fry there ac adapter because it gets really hot. However I don't use power converter on my famicom system because I use my sega genesis ac adapter which is good substitute if u don't want to use a power converter.
  • Take a look at:

I also use a Genesis Model 1 Power Adapter on my Famicom.
  • It is a good idea to use one.

Keep in mind a lot of these famicom power supplies are over 20 years old, which means the capacitors inside them are not in the best condition.

Personally, I do not use one on my AV famicom, but I do unplug it when not in use. Even when these things are not in use, they are still taking life off the capacitors.
  • Well, these are Famiclones, so I'm not sure if I should spend the money on a Nintendo power converter. And I found a 100 v Step up/Down converter, so would that work, or should I use more?

This is all too confusing for me!
  • I think japanese stuff takes DC rather then AC. Be sure to check that.
  • I have had absolutely no problems with either my US or Japanese PS2s in either country over many years, but yeah a brick AC might get hot. I'm getting a separate adapter for my PC Engine.
  • There's only a 10 Volt difference between the US and Japan. 110 vs 120. I've not heard of any problems with Japanese electronics overheating or running into problems plugged directly into US outlets. In fact most are designed to accept the higher voltage. I own a handful of Japanese systems (Japanese SuperGrafx, Japanese Saturn, Japanese Dreamcast) and have not had any problems.
