Safe way to remove tape from top of a Playstation game discs?
So I got me a nice complete greatest hits FFVII for my PS1 today, it was boxed, bubble wrapped, packed very well, and everything seemed exactly as described by seller, in very good condition, case overall fine just a minor crack, instruction manual perfect condition, discs also very nice condition, but ran into a problem...the discs were taped down. So points to the seller for caring, but I think she was being overly cautious about worry of discs coming loose and getting scratched up during shipping, because the tape was a very bad idea. I struggled to get it off of the discs, discs 1 & 3 it came off okay enough even though with some effort, but disc 2 tore a part of the top layer with it, uh-oh.
So there's the damage. Tested each disc out, 1st disc fine, second disc won't load, tried 3rd disc, that one's fine, put 2nd disc in again, nope, dead. trying to find a way to resolve this now, but in the meantime I got another game on the way from this seller and being as the FFVII discs were taped its a good bet this other game's discs will be too and those won't be so easily replaced.
Anyway, my question, since I'm expected more taped games, how best to remove it without damage to disc?. My reason for asking is before I pulled this tape off I had no clue it would have ever taken a layer of disc off with it, so I need a good sure way to easily remove without risk of damage, either that or I send the next item back without even opening and try for a refund because I'm downright worried as hell now. As it is I gotta get me another disc 2 for FFVII just so I can play through the whole game.

Yeah, I know. Seller got back with me, said not to worry, that she will find one to replace the damaged one for me.
Just hope the next one don't come taped like this, if so, got to find a safe method of removal other than just peeling off because I see now what that can do. Another life lesson learned, the hard way.
Yeah, PS1 system. I would've used tissue or paper towel as well, never seen anyone tape 'em before, even if she'd done it before without problems, there's always a first. But anyway, I'm pretty certain she'll work with me to get the disc replaced.
Regardless of what system you put it in, it's a goner. The data on a CD resides in that top layer, so its screwed unfortunately.
I would suggest playing the FF7 PC version. It has better graphics then the PS version, and can be found for free easily on the interwebs.
Just making sure, you are playing it in a PS1 correct? I know you mentioned getting it for your PS1, but again, just making sure. I had a really nice condition FF7 Greatest Hits where a couple of the discs wouldn't load in my PS2. I figured they were backwards compatible but I guess that's not always the case. Once I tried them out in my PS1 they all worked. Sucks about the tape, I just use a paper towel or something to hold them down.
Playing it in a PS1 or 2 doesn't matter... the top surface is shredded. If the top of a CD/DVD gets scratched, there's no repairing it.
I have another one coming to me soon hopefully, seller says she ordered a replacement for me, and the one she's buying from contacted me as well since I contacted him inquiring about the disc 2 he had up for sale. I feel bad this is coming out of her pocket, but its her mess up, shouldn't have taped the discs, was no need to go that much into securing them. Not sure what I'll do with the disc I currently have, I guess keep it as a souvenir, afterall its dead as a game.
My Ogre Battle was a former rental. It had the entire top covered with a rental label. I got it off alright, but it cracked when I was cleaning off the residue... sucks.
Clearly. Bad enough they put stickers and crap all over carts, but at least the part with the data is protected for the most part, but with cd's, stickers, deep scratches, harsh chemicals, even permanent marker can destroy a game, make it unplayable either right away or years later when the damage takes effect, that's it, may as well toss it out, or find an alternative use such as arts 'n crafts.
I got Arc the Lad Collection coming to me from the seller of my FFVII, she had that one listed as like new, and if the description is right on like with the FFVII before the tape removal, I really don't want to open it and see that those discs are taped down too, I'll be like, oh geez, how am I to perform an operation such as this on these games without killing the patient?!
I have a deep hatred for sticky stuff, from gum that sticks to the bottom of your shoe, to stickers on NES carts, now tape on PS1 games, urgh. I never recall liking stickers when I was little either, I remember liking to look at them but not actually sticking them to stuff.
Whats funny, is that rental stores always knew of this, and is why they put stickers on the the top that cover the whole disc. If they are removed, the information is removed along with it making the disc useless. They do help a bit from keeping the label getting scratched in the first place, so as far as rental labels that cover the whole disc I just leave them all on there.
As for glue from tape, I'm not sure if you can remove it with GooGone, but I wouldn't even attempt that either. (it might take forever to clean off if you are successful anyways). Just leave it as is.
Example pics of how bad tape or other sticky stuff on a disc can be:
You see the middle part, you can always see through that, no data there, that's where the disc will rest on a spindle, but beyond that if you can see through it, you got yourself a damaged disc. These pics you can clearly see my ceiling fan light through the spot that got removed by the tape, ain't nothing there anymore, just a blank window to cd death.

I hate stickers. I remember when I was a kid and I put Spider-Man stickers all over my bedroom door and my dad beat the shit out of me with a belt. I've hated stickers all my life and I really hate games to be covered in them, especially those shitty yellow gamestop ones.
That's terrible. Sounds like a reasonable reason to hate them.

Oh, very good, got my other game in the mail today from the same seller as the FFVII one, this being the Arc the Lad Collection, and pleased to say, no tape. Yay! And item, even though just like with the FFVII game didn't have any pictures to see what it looked like, it ended up exactly as described, and for this one, 'like new', and this collection of games is very minty, with all kinds of nice extras. I looked everything over carefully, as well as spending quite some time testing each of them out, all are scratch free and play fine.
So she made a mistake with the whole tape thing with the other game, but is doing something to fix that error, and hopefully learns from it not to tape down games again. Why FFVII disc were taped down and not the Arc the Lad ones I dunno, but I was extremely relieved these ones were not. But if all goes well with my FFVII even though she messed up, because she has such great communication and willing to go out of her way to fix problems, if ever she has anything else that interests me I really think I'd buy from her again.
Yesterday I was really upset because of what happened, today really friggin' happpy.
I must admit that I learned something from this thread. I've been collecting PS1 games for awhile and I don't play test everything I receive. I hope none of my titles are damaged on top, but luckily I've never dealt with tape or rental stickers on them. Sorry to hear that it happened to you, but at least the seller seems to be reputable and willing to fix the mistake.
Yes, don't buy that Starblade
