SNES battery replacement

So after putting a good 8 hours into Illusions of Gaia, for the 2nd time, I'm assuming my battery is dead since there's no saved data anymore. Since I'm huge into RPG's, I want to make sure that if this sort of thing happens again, I want to be able to fix it later on.

Does anyone know which batteries to use? (either the straight solder in type, or the low profile battery holder + batteries).

Also, I'm sure it's just as simple as snipping the old battery out and resoldering in the new battery, but since I've never done this, can someone confirm that as well?

Thanks!

  • The battery is a CR2032, but You can use pretty much any 3v battery if it fits.

You cant solder directly to the battery which is a bitch... The ends are pressed on.

You can either buy a replacement battery with the end already on and just solder them to the board,

or buy a CR2032 battery holder and you will be able to solder that to the board and just pop the bettery in it.

Someone may have an easier or cheaper solution though but thats my 2 cents
  • Thanks man!
  • Go with the holder. I bought a couple dozen off ebay for ~$2 shipped. A little dremel work and they fit snug. Next time it's time to change the battery, takes 5 secs rather than busting out the soldering iron again.

    + good for resell business
  • I generally desolder the holder part from the board, removed the old battery, scuff up the new one and solder it to the holder part and then resolder it all back to the board.
  • I think I have an extra one here.
