Nightowljrm's Year of Gaming
No repeating the same game. For example, if a game is completed on day 3, it cannot be beaten to count as a "game beaten" for any other day.
Kill screens count as beating the game.
No emulating, all games must be played on real hardware; however, they don't have to be games I actually own. Borrowing is okay. The only exception is homebrews that have been released as public ROMs.
No using passwords to skip ahead.
No turbo controllers or anything that gives a slight advantage.
No cheats, such as the Konami code, and no Game Genies/Game Sharks may be used.
No continuing old saves. Every game beaten must be from start to finish in 2012. This includes save states.
Multiple games can be played in a day. For instance, I can play/beat Castlevania and play The Legend of Zelda a little bit each day. When I get to Ganon, save, beat a different game, and defeat Ganon the next day. Then it will count.
Two games can't be beaten in one day to compensate for a different day in the past or the future.
Remakes or re-distributions don't count. For example, I can't beat Castlevania on the NES then again on the GBA. Also, beating The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, then beating The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D does not count. However, playing The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time then The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - Master Quest does due to significant differences.
Proof must be given. I won't waste my time showing pictures unless someone specifically asks, though.
Ideally, the games must be beaten before midnight (central time). However, this is not always possible due to busy days, and in the spirit of gaming, if a game is not beaten by midnight, it may be completed and counted as the day it was started on as long as the game is finished in that sitting.
In short, all games must be played and beaten legitimately.
And just to clarify a few things... Yes, I'm in college, but I got a lot of scholarship. Most of my college is paid for. For the the year, I'll owe ~$2,000. This summer, I'm working four days a week for $10/hour. (Which will also make this challenge that much more difficult). So I'm being responsible with my time. My college will be paid for and the rest will go to savings/games. That and my girlfriend and I still have until August to be together again, so I have nothing better to do. As for time with friends... They're hardcore gamers, too. So it'll be a thing to do with friends. Not to mention that there's quite a few fifteen-minute-long games (The Little Mermaid - NES) that I could play on days I don't feel like gaming.

only do it if you change the name to the great 2012 beat-off
Lol, grosssss... X_X I'd prefer not to.
I don't think you can do it without actually a couple months planning and practice before the year.
Yeah, I'm planning which games to play on which day. Especially on days I know I'll be busy already. That and I'm saving games I'm really good at for days where I won't be able to play much.
Sounds awesome.
The most games I'd ever beaten within a year was back in 2003 when I beat 90 NES games (42 new titles, and 48 rebeats of games I'd beaten other times before), that was an awesome year for me. But to beat 365 games in a year, that'd be pretty tough, some massive commitment there, as well as needed time to put into gaming. Even moreso to record all of them.

Lol, that's pretty intimidating, then. Especially considering you're an impressive gamer yourself and you're saying it's gonna be tough.
I mean record as in video of entire gameplay. I'd tried to do it in the past for games I'd beaten, barely ever got any of them recorded, just too much work. Heck, hard enough just trying to take pics of the endings of all of them. But if I can, I really want to do recordings of every game that I beat this year, not an easy task with a mom and dog around almost all the time, and without my own tv at that.

Hm. What makes it difficult, exactly? (Genuine question, I see how that can be read sarcastically). Isn't it just setting some sort of recording device in front of the TV (or at least at an angle) and recording then saving the footage? I guess there is the element of keeping the batteries charged/replaced, but that doesn't seem to bad. I definitely see how having some extra responsibilities in addition to not having your own TV can pose a significant problem, though. That's why I'm giving this a shot while I still don't have too many responsibilities.
I think there's the possibility I may be able to do it. I'd have to take some serious time to put a list together from all the systems I've played over the years though. And I would have to limit it to games I could beat in an hour or two at most. There's a lot of arcade-style games I've finished though, including the obligatory NES stuff.. Hmm.. it would be an interesting endeavor to say the least, haha..

Then you have the fact that you know you are recording when you are playing. I don't know about others, but I get tense and do not generally play as well when I am recording. For some reason I don't have issues when I am being watched, just when I know I am recording.
Finding 365 games you can beat is one feat, finding the time to play and beat a game a day is madness. Good luck man!
That's a pretty cool idea for sure. Good luck, hopefully you can make it happen!

Yeah, especially 'cause I have 444 games as of now... Looks like I'll be buying more. Not that I wouldn't be doing that, anyway, but it looks like sometimes I'll have to purposefully buy easy games. We'll see how it goes!

Well, for me is because I'm a perfectionist, if I don't like the way something turned out, either my playing or how the recording looks or sounds, I end up restarting, sometimes quite often, I am so very picky. Plus, I tend to play worst when I know I'm recording myself playing. This was very frustrating back when I was using my old camcorder, all of the constant rewinding, ugh. Got me a pretty good webcam though now, so its just a matter of setting it up in a good place and making sure the conditions (lighting, sound, angle) are all just right and do it the same for each game so set up will be easy each time thereafter.
And why I've never done more in a year than those 90 that I done that one great year is because its really hard for me to just pick up any ol' game just at any time, planning things out, what I'm going to play one day, and then the next and next after that, just don't work for me, I have to be completely in the mood to play, otherwise I totally suck. Even if I were to take on a crazy challenge like that, I haven't even beaten that many NES games yet, 270 total (260 something actual carts), so I'd have to get really good and beat a ton of games I'd never beaten before, or take on games from some other console too, I'd end up failing the challenge.

Yeah, good points. I'd probably record with a webcam (if I do).
Do kill screens count as beating the game?
I would certainly think so! Not that I could reach a kill screen, lol. Then again, I've never tried.
Indeed it would be. I'm almost tempted to try to do this, and try not to worry about perfection. Afterall I don't have to always be at my best, play a no death game of Castlevania or Shatterhand, and sometimes being as some games I haven't played in a very long time I may have to remember what to do or where to go, I could think of it as it being my first time experience at each, could be fun. I'm really curious of how well I could do at this. Heck, I'd like to get started right now because by the time the new year starts I'll probably fall back into the same ol' thing I do most every night, sit at my laptop, glance at the tv once in a while, play with my dog every so often, cross-stitch maybe. I gotta get back into the game, I certainly want to. As is it, I told myself, this year, not going to miss any of the high score contests, going to compete in all of them no matter what, its going to be hard enough for me to stick to that goal.

Lol, I remember your score from the Castlevania high-score competition. Ridiculous. I can no-death Castlevania. I don't always succeed (those bats at the end of the last level), but it's an easy game to beat. Same with Shatterhand. Those are some I'm saving for days where I'd only have about an hour free time in day.
There was a time many years ago when during my free time at home, that's all I would do, play video games, mostly NES of coarse. Nowadays, I might play a game a week maybe half a dozen times or so, usually for the high score contest, and that's it. I'd like to get back to what I used to do, but maybe those times have passed, guess I'll find out soon when this next year starts.

That's why I'm trying to capitalize on this spare time I have. I know eventually when I get a full-time job, I'm married, and later, when I have a family, I won't have time for gaming - not that I'd want to as much - but I want to really soak it in and do something I'd like to brag about before I don't have time to anymore.
This sounds like a challenge for Mr. Mini Mog. 8-)
Mog would get to 364, then the family would come spend the weekend and demand to see their son.
Probably not a good idea for sane people. To the rest--- good luck!
Do kill screens count as beating the game?
Is there a kill screen you can get to, personally? DK?
I'm sure some other black box games probably have one too.
Would I? Probably not.
Good luck on your quest!

Doesnt Duck hunt do something weird if you play 99 levels
I'll start with some easier games that I can speed run through (Mario 1, 2, 3, SMW, Mega Man 2) and then start an RPG or 2 and work through them on alternating days. Some games, like Final Fantasy 1 and Secret of Mana I can beat in 1 sitting, same with Illusions of Gaia and Soul Blazer, so that shouldn't be too much of an issue. Plus some fighting games as well.
Do you count the same game on different consoles as 2 different games, or just 1 (ie, Mortal Kombat on SNES and Genesis, maybe Sega CD)? How about games in a series that are very close to each other (Street Fighter 2, SF2 Turbo, SF2 Special Championship Edition, Super Street Fighter 2) etc? How about multiple games on the same day to clear up a few days in advance to finish through a longer game?

Apparently after you finish level 99 it resets to 0 and it glitches like crazy. I've been trying to find out myself, but the farthest I've gotten was level 67. Here's a YouTube video of what supposedly happens:
