Why can't I use the PM search function?

Whenever I try to use the PM search I don't get any response. However, some tests do show that if I search for "Dain" for example will yield results.

I'm thinking maybe there's something up with the servers cache?

Edited title & content for clarification purposes, sorry for sounding rough before.

  • I noticed this too. I tried searching for users who have PM'd me so I could PM them about things and it would never give me what I asked for. I didn't think it really warranted a topic but if more people are having this issue then I'll vouch it's happening to me too.
  • What browser are you using? I just tried and it found every message I searched for, so I'm not sure what makes this so useless?
  • I'm using Opera, which has some other issues, such as the post message interface not working properly.

EDIT: Just tried to search PMs again and it works now. It wasn't the other day when I was trying to contact people. Maybe my PC/shoddy internet was just having a moment. >.>

DOUBLE EDIT: It only half works. It worked when I searched for 'Dain' but when I searched for another member it didn't display anything at all. The second page and third page of 'Dain' results also displayed nothing.
  • Using Chrome 16 on Windows 7 x64.

All I get when I hit the search button is the spinning "loading" icon in my browser search bar.
  • I'm using Chrome 16 and it seemed to work great for me the dozen or so times I just tested it. There's a free program, I think it's called HTTPanalyzer you can get and then trace it through to see where exactly your hitting a roadblock.
  • On a semi-related tangent, I've always had problems when searching through the member directory. Like when you remember part of a person's name, but not their whole name. Seem to get a lot of false positives.

Example, search the member directory with the keyword "time". I get results of 8bitsAtAtime, anytime, breaktime, buddytime, DroMeadows (?), herooftime94, Kao (?), Ninn (?), and then back to more time references. That doesn't seem right.

I have run into this problem before, also it seems like when a member search brings back more than 1 page of results, if you click to go the 2nd page it just starts listing all the members in alphabetical order.

I'm too lazy to read the entire thread, but your thread title is pretty douchie.  Just FYI.

Sorry about that, didn't mean to come off as douchie. If better words were to be picked I would say "Why can't I use the search function"...in fact, title changed. Sorry about that all!

This was fixed a while ago.

This is actually somewhat correct, depending on how you look at it. The search also searches their email address, which I may or may not remove. I like being able to find users that way as well, despite it not returning that information for display. I can pop in an email address that someone sends me, and it'll return their username.

  • Gotcha. I figured there had to be some rhyme or reason, but it wasn't apparent from user names or the "display name" underneath. But if emails are not visible then that would explain how I could not tell. As long as it's a known issue it's cool by me.

Could you not add a drop down box or check box or something to choose to include email addresses in the search or something? Just a suggestion.

I guess it's been longer than I thought since I last ran in to it.  Works perfectly now
