Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Hillsfar
Yeah, basically I've been playing the crap out of Hillsfar to try and knock it off on my completion list. The Cleric, Fighter and Magic-User scenarios have all fallen by the wayside, but unfortunately I can't seem to finish with the Thief scenario, and it's really starting to irk me. I've spent 16 hours total on the game, about 10 of which I've spent on the damn Thief scenario. I'm stuck in the last quest, after defeating Ottis the Orc in the Arena and being sent to be recruited at the Bugbear's Cave tavern. I've tried everything to get the next quest hint to pop up, but to no avail. Supposedly it pops when you listen to gossip, but I sat there quite literally for 4+ hours without anything, and have restarted the scenario from scratch to try and avoid it. Am I missing something or is this an unpassable glitch in the game?

Yes and no. I've shelved it for the time being, but I will get back to it eventually. It's just hurting my brain trying to figure out if I screwed up somewhere along the line, or if it's glitched, or if I'm just an idiot and missing the obvious
Honestly sometimes, it's better just to start the damn thing over from scratch. Sounds weird, but there is many a game, that was the final remedy for me.
Either you can build up momentum through breezing through it, or pick up an item, you completely missed along the way. I haven't played this game, so not sure if this will apply here or not.

If I start over, it's the third time doing so on this scenario. The first time I got stuck at the castle, couldn't figure it out. Second time I shelved it after getting stuck at the castle again, but picked it up a year and a half later and got to where I am now. Then I restarted and got stuck here again. I'm thinking it might possibly require a skill that the theif doesn't have, like "charm waitress" or something (it's a command exclusive to mages). I'm thinking I should use the fighter-mage-thief and see if that helps. It's random which quest line you get with the multi-class characters, but I can always restart and try again until I get on the thief quest line. It'd just suck to do all that without any idea if it even works or not.

Bet it makes you wish there was a "Charm Game" skill, eh?
I know when I tried the nes version I was quite disappointed in it. How did you ever beat all the arena fighters, the controls are terrible.. lol
Sorry, I don't remember much, but I do remember at least in the PC game that it can be done and there was never any point that you had to listen to gossip for a really long time or anything?
Are there other pubs you can listen to gossip in? Or maybe you missed the quest gossip already? I do remember sometimes you have to sleep or rest for a night first before things would happen. Have you tried just moving on to the archery range and completing 4 archery levels anyway despite there being no special gossip?
In the PC version you can keep your characters from hillsfar and use them in pool of radiance and curse of the azure bonds. I loved those games as a kid.
EDIT: Nope, that failed miserably
