Do you collect to play?

Thought I'd ask this.  I've been getting carts for both a hobby but I do like to play them.  When I started, I picked out a lot of the games I remembered but never owned the carts for (i.e. Ninja Gaiden, Mike Tyson's P.O., and the Lolo series!)

I've gotten a bunch of carts over the past few months, and it's fun to pick a game and just play it.  I'm thinking of playing something like Faxanadu next.

Do you guys play the games you have?

I do both - stuff to 'collect', strictly, and stuff to play. I think everyone does it a little bit differently.
  • I have played every single game in my collection. Some of them for only a few minutes, some for hours on end. I collect more than I play now, but I still play a good amount.

  • I play a few games a lot, but not the other way around. I tend to replay the games I love or ones that my GF and I enjoy (ie, Arkanoid, Crackout, and Time Lord {don't ask!}).

I hope you play with the Arkanoid controller.  I got one of those and it makes the game a lot better.  Never heard of Crackout, but I do have Time Lord.
  • Actually, we play with the normal controller! Crazy! It is more difficult, but my GF doesn't know any different because she's never played using the Vaus (and I'm not about to open my sealed copy). Crackout is a lot like Arkanoid, but in many ways a lot better.... that is until you reach a point in the game where it's next to impossible to get past. I'm not really sure why we like Time Lord so much -- maybe because my GF enjoyed cussing alongside me, trying to beat that damn dude with the sombrero.

  • Crackout is a PAL game!!

I scanned the back of mine, See below!

  • Aye, that it is -- a pretty fun game too, especially if you like Arkanoid-type games.

  • Ah.  That's probably why I haven't heard of it then.  No PAL or Famicom stuff for me...
  • I like arkanoid upgraded breakout
  • I mainly collect, but I play also sometimes. I only play about 40-50 games ever (the good ones). Arkanoid is one of my favorites to pay with the vaus controller.
  • I do both aswell... Really, I just wanted to post this to admit that I quite like Time Lord also so you are not the only 1.
  • I love playing the games nobody wants to give a chance. Just got the UBISoft Indiana Jones in the other day, and I fucking LOVE it!
  • I play every game I get. Similar to NGD, some I only play for a few minutes, but I usually go back to them eventually.
  • I pretty much only collect. I obviously play games, but out of my 2,200 games that I have in my collection, there are probably less than 100 that I have ever played.
  • I think if I ever get a system hooked up where I can leave multiple systems hooked up I would play more Its a pain to keep pulling the tv out to switch connections from one system to another.Eac system has a few favorites I like

You should get an AV switch.  I got one and it served my needs.  It only supports 3 inputs, but I don't play anything other than my NES, SNES, and Sega.  If I ever get into the Playstation again, I could swap out a connection.

Pretty cheap and it works fine.

that would work if i can find one that has all cable connections instead of the av connections
  • Time Lord is sweet! I love that game even though it does piss you off trying to find the fifth orb (or what ever the last orb is). Especially when you jump for one, and it seems to move up higher. I guess I need to re-buy that game now, thanks guys..
  • This is a good question, and I must admit that I don't really collect to play. I do test every game that I add to my collection prior to storing it away, just so that I can say that I've played/tested them all, but I hardly play any NES games nowadays. I mainly collect to reach a set goal, and the same goes for NES accessories (except for the latter I have the advantage of being able to document new things image).

Yeah, the game's okay. It does have some cool cover art in my opinion.  Too bad it's one of those Milton Bradley labels which makes the image smaller.
  • I'm going to have to pull out Time Lord and try it out again. That was one of those games I only played for a few minutes and then put it up.
  • When I pick up games I have full intent to play them, but it really doesn't happen too much.  I am trying to get better at it.  I just played Wrecking Crew for the second time.  Level 10 was giving me a real hard time.  I was also on my treadmill while playing.  Nothing like excercising and playing games at the same time.  You have to be careful though...
I really like the fact that the manuals are available on the website.  I pulled Wrecking Crew down to take a look at how to play before I started.  Many thanks for all the hard work that has been put in here.
Does anyone like to do the games like Excitebike, Mach Rider and Wrecking crew where you can program your own levels?  I haven't really gotten into it.

You can hook the NES and SNES up with the AV cables
  • I do like to play the games. If they arent for play, they got no certain value. I do both, collect and play. Games give me no happiness at all if they arent played. Sure I like to look att my small collection but playing is more than 50% of the fun with the collecting. Boxed and complete games are on the other hand a must for collecting at all
  • I collect to play.  I'm not trying to acquire all the NES games that have ever been released.  I only want the ones that I find at least semi-enjoyable.  If I really don't like a game I'll get rid of it to buy other games that I actually like.
  • I play everything I have, and hope to continue to do so as I get more games. I can usually find something to enjoy about any game, even if it's mostly just for comic value. Especially if you have like-minded friends playing with you.

Speaking of playing games, I just realized that we don't have a board in here for actual Game Play discussions. Would that just go under Everything Else, or should we have something dedicated to it? Would people even use it if one existed? Or is this the forum for discussions like that? It seems that most everything is a collector topic as opposed to a player topic.
