The Dragon Warrior games - Yay or nay?

I've been thinking of checking these titles out.  I have a DW1 cart, which I got cheap, but I haven't played it.  I was thinking of giving it a go for kicks.

Just wondering if it would be worth doing and if it would be worth checking out more in the series.

  • It's definitely worth playing if you're into RPGs. The first one is kinda slow, but it's enjoyable nonetheless. From there the series just gets better.
  • DW 1 is ok. The rest are crap though. I just don't like RPG's though.

  • Which of the DW games is the best one? DW III?
  • The Dragon Warrior Games for NES are the best games ever made for any system.
  • I think this is one of the greatest video game series. I'm not sure which one is the best though. Tough call for me.

I'll tell you the worst RPG for the NES though and that's Dragon Wars. Gah *shudder* But that's only because I couldn't get past 10 minutes of the game without being disgusted. Maybe if you get past that 10 minute frame it gets better but I'm not about to find out again!
  • Well, I started DW1 tonight.  I cleared off the saved games the guy had on it.  2 of them were level 1 saves anyway...

Anyway, I'm up to a level 6 guy and trying to earn money to buy a Hand Axe...  Hopefully the adventure begins after getting that.

Hey, don't knock Dragon Wars. I rather enjoy it...even if the magic recovery pool wasn't enabled...maybe someone can finish the ROM or something?
  • All four DW games kick major ass. DW1 may seem a little dated if you have played 3 or 4 but it was still a great game when it came out.

DW4 is, in my oppion, the best NES game ever made and one of the best RPG's ever made for any system. There are people who'll make the same argument for DW3 !!

    The games are that good.
  • I am no actual RPG fan but I learned to like them. I have played DW 1 and colud tell you this, if you can play FF1 you can play DW 1. I'm intend to buy them all 4 complete with box and manual but if I can, with the maps to.

And we also got this ironic fact: As the games gets better and better they also gets more expensive. If it taste good it do cost you a lot. After all I intend to get all US releases exept for those pirates from tengen, sachen, color dreams etc

I must learn to like the games and I will do
  • I actually started playing this last week. Luckily the cart saves still worked. Just beat the green dragon... which took forever. Almost forgot how hard this game can be.
  • Next to the Zelda series, the Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest series is my personal favorite.  DW IV, though somewhat pricey (carts seldom go under $40), is in the top 3 best games I've played.  DW I is probably the worst in the series, though still a decently good game.
  • Well, I may pick up the remaining games sometime.  DW1 is okay, but very tedious.  I can see how RPGs came a long way since this one was first.  image

  • One of the first. If I'm not mistaken, the original Phantasy Star came out first State-side. And RPGs were running for years before on the PC, although console-wise, I think it was first in Japan.
  • I dont know compared to other NES RPG's (other than FF1), but personally I love DW1. I actually have the other 3 aswell.I started and beat the first one and never got around to beating the others. there is nothing better than killing that damn metal slime!
  • Yeah, the DW games are definitely worth the time.

I have all four, but haven't beater the third installment yet...made the mistake of originally playing on a Yobo because my NES was boxed up somewhere...I was a little pissed when my level 25 party mysteriously vanished due to how that system powers down.

Now I'm back into it on the real deal, so it should be smooth sailing.
