Promos vs. Protos

I know protos are all the rage with collectors, but what about the promo carts that were made to send out to game mags for review? Curious who owns promo carts?

Thanks

  • I am not really into protos/demos honestly. I have 5 total and I got them all pretty cheap. I would let most of them go for something I really need or a nice cash offer.

I don't know about prototypes being all the rage, there's only a select few that are really into them...as far as I've seen, promo carts get lumped into the category of prototypes.  DreamTR made a great post at one point either on DP or some random forum about what different carts are commonly referred to as 'prototypes,' even though they really aren't.
  • Actually, I have one promo which is Karate Kid.

No EPROM inside, standard PCB. So probaly used for game magazine review for promo at the time.

I haven't seen any difference playing it but I didn't dump the cart.
  • Yep, when we talk about NES games, promo (those who were sent out to magazines) also goes under the catagory proto. Most of them have EPROMs. I have one proto that i bought from DreamTR quite some time ago. Its Star Soldier and it got normal ROMs. The PCB board got some minor differences than the retail tho, compared it myself image
