  • Forget it, died in the stupid hallway before shredder again, I had 3 turtles with almost full life - Killed off both my continues in the same spot after that - I don't know how anyone actually beats that part, but I'm done playing this game. I give up, I admit it.

You're SO close man!  Watch a video on YouTube to see how it's done.  About the half-way point, you will get to a point where enemies will alternate from one flying blue guy to one flying bug robot.  This is where you want to use Raph - when the blue guy appears, duck and wait, and he'll fly off the screen to the right.  When the bug appears, duck and hit it.  One hit with Raph is enough, whereas it's 2 with Leo or Mike (you wanna save Don for Shredder).

Ah screw it, here's a vid.  He did it different, using scrolls to clear the bugs, but you get the idea.  If you have the scrolls, by all means, go for it, but there's no reason to give up when you just have to take it slow.

    EDIT: Forgot the link

  • Yeah, the only way I ever made it was to stock up on scrolls.
  • Everyone thanks for the support, especially Wizard, thanks for the encouragement. I FINALLY BEAT THIS FUC*3R TONIGHT! No continues, stocked up on scroll's like crazy, each turtle only had 2 BARS of life of LESS going into Shredder, but I just blasted him. Thanks so much, feels good to beat this SOB!

  • here's a victory pic taken by the supportive wifey!!
  • Congrats man! Told you you could do it! It's like pretty much any game out there man - it's beatable, it just takes practice and effort, and sometimes a bit of luck Any plans on what you're gonna beat next?
  • Thanks! It was an awesome game, forget whoever says it stinks! I don't know what's next, any recommendations?
  • Well, what do you have in your collection (assuming you use carts and not emulators, which is an assumption your pic validates), and what kind of games do you like to play? I've found that almost any game can be enjoyable, but some take far more to get into than others do
  • Yeah - I was thinking of the collection limitations, I have emulators, but prefer carts. I have roughly 60 carts, I'm thinking Castlevania II, but don't have it yet.... I like games like TMNT, pretty straight-foward. I'll look through them, pick a few and see what you think..
  • Oh, BTW, I have TMNT 2 Aracade, but don't know if I like it as much..
  • Honestly, I thought TMNT 2 was awesome back in the day, but nowadays it's pretty weak compared to the other two. TMNT 1 was an awesome (and challenging) action-adventure, as you've already experienced, and TMNT 3 followed the same vein as TMNT 2, but was MUCH better done overall. TMNT 2 is worth playing through once, but once that's done I don't really see a reason to play it again.

As for something straightforward, take a look for Dick Tracy. It's somewhat challenging, but it's also fairly short (5 levels). The levels are a bit long when you first play them (they get easier once you know where to go), and it can be tricky (you have to pay attention to the clues you're given, and figure out where to go yourself), but once a case is done you can jot the password down and keep going. It's definitely got it's share of flaws, but like any game, once you get used to the way your character behaves on screen, it's not that bad. Plus you should have no problem snagging it for $5 or less if you don't already have it.
  • I have a good NES rom set, It is number ordered to match the database here at NA. Lemme know how you want me to send them.
  • Wizard - I'll check out Dick Tracy - I'm looking at a 28 game score tomorow, hopefuly I get it. If so I might try to mess with one of the, Ninja Gaiden or Castelvania III in particular! I'll prob. grab Dick Tracy off Ebay - I can get it for just 5 bucks shipped!

JBO - another user, snstay, was able to hook me up!! Thanks for the offer, it's really cool everyone helps everyone around here!
  • Yeah, the best part about snagging $5 games is that if you don't like it, it only cost you $5 to find out, and if you do like it, you got an awesome game for $5. Either way, you can't go wrong

I try and play every game I feel like firing up, and many of them have bad reputations - Conan, Superman, Predator, Castle of Dragon, Dr. Chaos, etc. Of those I've finished all but Predator, and enjoyed every last one of them (although Conan had me pulling hairs out for a while). Go in with an open mind and don't expect much, and you'd be surprised how many games are actually pretty good!

Also, for other cheap yet fun games that you may not hear about often, try some of these:

    Astyanax

Captain Skyhawk (I seriously see it everywhere, kind of an isometric plane game with After Burner style segments every few levels...it's excessively long, but it's a fun romp)

    City Connection

    Code Name: Viper

    Kabuki Quantum Fighter

    Kick Master

    Kid Niki

    Magic of Scheherazade

    Rygar

    Vice Project Doom

    Willow

World Games (not really single player, but it's awesome for a multiplayer party game...something to involve the wife anyway )

    Xexyz

There's others, but that was what a quick scan of my shelf yielded for good cheap fun. There are games that are better than these, but they tend to cost a bit more (generally speaking), and not all of them may appeal to you, but as far as bang-for-your-buck, these are all solid picks. I also kept it to licensed games. Unlicensed is a whole other ballgame. As far as game quality, typically you are safe picking up Tengen or Camerica games. The rest are very much hit-or-miss, but I find even the poorest of the poor tend to have their own charm. Personally I enjoy a number of them, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're good...more like "so bad it's good"
  • I love this game even if some people bash it. It was my first game with Mario 2 and Zelda back in the days.

I managed to beat it when I was 9 after 6 month of try with my dad. I was collecting 99 scrolls for the 4 turtles to beat it more easily at this time.

I bought the game on ebay (it's so cheap) 3 years from now to replay it. At first I thought I probably never finish it again because I lost a little patience over the years but I played through the first 3 worlds often.

One day, I decided to play casualy to try to go as far as I can without being frustrated (I was only planing to finish world 4 at first) but in the end I could finish it with only one game over. I was surprised because I found it not so hard (My turtle were all almost dead at the end but I finished it even if I was not playing so well). I didn'y even bother to stock 99 scrolls for the 4 heroes.

The game is pretty hard and need to be known for some of its deadly traps or akward design. But if you know some tips you can finish it like a lot of games. Maybe playing it on emulator can train you, but if you over use the save states you can really learn well how to play.

Still one of my fav game on the system, it could be a really great game if some simple issues were tweaked (time for a hack to fix this, anyone ? )
  • That stupid sewer jump in level 3 is what usually irritates me to the point of turning off the game

I think I've only cleared it a couple of times, ever

I really should pick this one back up and actually beat it...
  • Yes this. There is some jumps after where you need to slash when low-jumping to beat the flying enemies coming to drop you in the water a couple of times. It's a frustrating level indeed.

The part that make me the more nervous is the end of world 4 with the deadly walls before the boss. When I beat it I loose 3 of my turtles in this because you need a perfect timing. At least they have put a room before with the same setting to train.

I think I've only lost a turtle once there.  It was like Nathan said, the sewer jump at the end of level 3 always got me ragin' as a kid.  I've always been the type to have a leaden finger on the jump button, which is exactly the wrong thing to do when you take that jump.  The rest is not too tough, just gotta be patient

  • Well wizard - I bought Dick Tracy on Ebay - 5 bucks shipped, not bad. If it ever ships, lol, it's been like 5 days.

I'm playing Castlevania III right now, what a bitch, but at least it saves, been working on level 6 ALL DAY!! I suck , lol, good game though.
  • I take that back, just checked, Dick Tracy was 4.04 Shipped.

Saw it on the Genisis at a pawn shop for 3.50, but I'm working on NES for now...
  • The driving part of Dick Tracy is a bitch. Remember to get out and shoot the snipers otherwise your fucked before you ever get to the place you are going. It is a game that you need to take your time on. You get one life. no continues. Which for the wiz wouldn't be a problem! I love it that he doesn't use continues. Fuckin' Hardcore dude!

I use continues if I'm not familiar with a game.  TMNT is just one that if I continue on the Technodrome, I'm pretty well buttfucked at that point, so it's easier to just start over.  And Dick Tracy does have passwords at the end of each case, so there's continues in that regard.  It' definitely a tough one, but it's not a bad game, and is very much underrated (if only because few people ever really play it for more than 5 minutes)
  • I gave up on TMNT long ago after not being able to make a jump in the third level. Getting back into it recently, I looked up the game online and it turns out not only was I trying to jump from the wrong side, but I didn't even need to be in that building at all. Go figure! I'm now able to make it to the Technodrome, at least.

I remember playing TMNT II a ton at an arcade when I was younger. I actually made it all the way to Krang. Don't even want to know how many quarters were spent on that game. My only gripe with it is Shredder's intant-death attack.
  • Well, pretty pissed at Castlevania III right now, LOL. I'm on level 9, stuck on the part where you have to climb a few ladders with a bunch of things spitting fire at you, while those winged bads with shields fly by trying to knock you off... Anyways, been playing this all day and been stuck, got past it twice out of probabley 100 attempts...

    www.youtube.com/watch?v=_iP35pHJhOg 1.38 minute mark is where i'm stuck...fml , lol!
  • eric - if i can beat TMNT anyone can, really, anyone. I suck at games, lol - played it a thousand times first!
  • I beat this game back when it came out. It's a tough game until you learn all the patterns. Haven't played it in years but I could probably still make it through no problem. Last hallway before Shredder is the toughest part until you learn the trick to slowly advance and let the floating laser guys disappear off the edge of the screen. Cool game, almost got Bad Dudes instead back in the day which would've been a mistake.
  • That game was SUCH a pain in the ass! I think I got to the last level after playing it stressed out for hours and ran out of lives. I took it out and never played it again. Beat the LCD game version of it though lol
  • If it wasn't for the fact I knew Wizard was gonna think I was a bum without completing it I would have given up, lol! The games is beatable with practice, the last halway I just got lucky and hacked my way through , I just enough power to beat Shredder, never want to see this game again, ha ha ha! I think one day I'll pick it up again though, maybe with Game Genie for fun this time!
  • For TMNT1 lovers out there, here goes my challenge: finish it with just one turtle. I've done it with Leonardo. IMO this was one of the first NES games I owned as a kid, so I had lots, and lots and lots... and lots of practice . And stocking up scrolls. And knowing where will the technodrome show up (most likely)on one try. And finding a way to keep the laser creeps getting out of your way in the path to Shredder. Enough tips, game on!
  • I remember always barrowing TMNT from people as a kid, then as a teenager got my own copy at a flea market and was really happy about it. This thread makes want to play the game again, I haven't in a while and probably will tonight.
