Is Kingdom Hearts worth playing?

So I've known about Kingdom Hearts since it first came out, and I've heard all kinds of things about it, and even delved into the fandom (fan art, fanfics, the like). Yet I've never once picked up a game in the series.

I didn't own a PS2 until last year or so (I was a GameCube guy), don't own a PSP, lost my DS (or stupidly traded it away... don't remember), and am not getting a 3DS any time soon. From what I hear, in order to get the full experience, you need to play every single game, all of which are spread across the above platforms. I'd be fine just playing the first two games and Chain of Memories, is this okay?

I played a few minutes of the game one summer back in 2009 at a relative's house. I didn't really know what I was doing, besides, my memory's a little hazy.

I can pick up parts 1 and 2 for $15 each, and Chain of Memories for $10. Is it worth the money?

I like the idea and the concept. It seems like something I could get into.

  • I'd also like to know if it's worth it. I've been contemplating picking it up for the GBA but have too many other titles I'd like to finish first.
  • Yes. Great.

1 is better in terms of gameplay and difficulty.

2 is better in the sense that the story is longer and the voice actor went through puberty. Rather easy though.

I'd recommend playing both of them on hardest to gain the full enjoyment out of them.

Can't speak for any others personally, but I hear the later installments go down hill.
  • Definitely worth playing. Also, one of the few series that is worth playing in release order, the story references itself and you'll get a lot more out of it if you play them in order.
  • play them, evaluate them, give us a review.
  • I still refuse to play after I heard lance bass from nsync voiced Sephiroth. I won't do that to myself
  • They are worth playing.

And FF7 is full of itself so if that is true, no harm done with lance bass voice acting
  • Make sure you play them in order, or you can be like me, and be lost as shit in the plot because like a fool, I thought I could play Kingdom Hearts 2 right after I played the 1st one.

  • I've played the first two, and liked them both. The first one is one of my favorite games of all time. I'm still holding out that they finally make one for PS3.
  • i played every one....the games and overall story fits together amazingly well....definitely worth playing
  • I think the game is over rated. I couldn't get into the story and I found the last boss was too easy. But I haven't play part 2 yet. So my opinion might change once I play it.
  • I've only played parts 1 and 2 on the PS2, but I thought both were terrific and a load of fun. I'd recommend both highly.
  • The first game is definitely in my top 5 favorite games of all time. I LOVE Kingdom Hearts, and it is worth playing The sequels are ok, but no where as good in my opinion.
  • Kingdom Hearts is definitely one of my favorite games ever. You should be fine playing through the first 2 and Chain of Memories. You may fall in love with the story though and want to play the others. In order from my favorite to least:

    Kingdom Hearts I

    Kingdom Hearts II

    358 1/2 Days

    Chain of Memories

Birth By Sleep (I still have to beat it with all three characters though, so this may change)

    Coded

But yes, definitely play them. They're great. Especially if you're like me and love both Square and Disney.
  • I only played the first one but I really enjoyed it and I don't really like Disney stuff at all. Very fun game and they make good use of Disney characters in a very solid action RPG.
  • Definitely worth it. Especially if you're a Disney or Final Fantasy fan.
  • I played Kingdom Hearts 1 and it was pretty cool. Never played the rest tho
  • Well I've never played any of them before, but I did buy the first two off of megamanfan. I've been wanting to get them for a while now. Can't wait to try them out.
  • Definitely worth playing. 1 and 2 are 2 of the best games released for PS2 imo.
  • First and really only game that I played with my wife. Best launch title that I have bought to date IMO.
  • It looked extremely juvenile the couple of times I saw my roommate playing it, back in college.

Not that that is a terrible thing, in, and of, itself, but the fact that there were large interludes between levels in a "gummy ship" where it appeared impossible to die, just seemed like a stupid time waster.
  • Stupid time waster! The gummy ship is the best part!

Nah, you're probably right. I think the game designers wanted to create the illusion of traveling to distant worlds and figured they'd give you something to shoot at. At least later in the game you can warp, therefore skipping pretty much that whole part.

And I'd also agree that the game can come off as "juvenile." It IS a Disney game. (However, you ever see the movie "Kids?" How is that a Disney movie?)

The funny thing about my whole experience with this game is that I originally acquired it by telling my girlfriend at the time to, "See if you can find a game for yourself." She started playing it, I thought it looked cool, so I started my own save and beat it. She was pissed, "This was supposed to be my game!"
  • Well, I'm finally just sitting down to play through the first one.

Sephiroth is overrated anyway. Kefka's where it's at.

As for the topic at hand, they are very much worth the money in my opinion. The storyline is well crafted, though can be as incoherent as a William S. Burroughs novel at times, and the gameplay is absolutely rock solid. If you are a Final Fantasy fan or a Disney fan or both it'll throw you enough nostalgia in the form of your favorite characters to keep you interested as well.
  • HELL YES! On my list of my Top 10 Favorite Games EVER!
  • To me kingdom hearts is like an anime convention. At first it can be fun but after a while you start to see the unhealthy nature of it.
  • I enjoyed it
  • kingdom hearts was worth playing. Both 1 and 2
  • Okay, I know this is somewhat of a late bump, but I've been playing Kingdom Hearts II as of recently, and I think it's a spectacular game. I've played a fair amount of the first game, but this game is probably the better game hands down.

The story is much more interesting. Instead of "Sora goes from Disney Universe A to Disney Universe B," there's more involvement with other non-Disney characters. I don't get the whole Roxas thing... I imagine this is how it went when they came up with the idea for him.

Square Enix Employee A: Alright, let's create a new character.

Square Enix Employee B: Ooh! I have an idea!

Square Enix Employee A: Does anyone besides him have an idea?

    (silence)

Square Enix Employee A: Alright, what's your idea?

Square Enix Employee B: Let's take Sora, and make an alternate version of him. Let's take his name, switch around the letters, and add an "X" to it. I think we'll call him... Roxas.

    (other employees shrug in indifference)

Square Enix Employee A: Then it's settled. Roxas is our new character. As for the other characters, let's just take a bunch of Final Fantasy and Disney characters we haven't used yet and use them.

I know that's not exactly how it went down, but I have a feeling that not much originality went into him.
