So I purchased a PSP, and i'm a total NOOB.[i need help]

So I won a PSP and Xbox 360 slim in an Auction for $140 total.  I'm a long time gamer, but i've got to say I've never owned a PSP.

It's following PSP system:

I'm aware they make different models, with different features, but I really want to use my PSP to it's full potential, so I come to the NA community asking for help.

It came with a 1gb Memory Stick. when plugging the system to my computer via USB cord. it opens up a folder containing:

MP_ROOT[folder]

MUSIC[folder]

PICTURE[folder]

PSP[folder]

VIDEO[folder]

----

My question is... what cool things can i put on it? also what video/audio formats does it support?, and is there any cool sites for help?

Also I noticed a problem when trying to connect to a network. my wireless connection which is secured, and that I use for my WII/360/Laptop shows up, but cannot be clicked. I wasn't sure what the deal with this was. figured someone on here might be able to answer it for me.

  • To run emulators and other homebrew you must mod it. There are many tutorials out there how to do it, the pandora battery works the best. Usually talking about it on forums isn't acceptable, so I will just leave it at that.

After you have it modded you can drop an emulator in to the PSP/Game folder.

As for problems with the network, it doesn't support WPA encryption so it won't be able to connect.
  • Appreciate that.
  • My PSP won't connect to my modern WIFI router either.. The PSP is just too old unfortunately...

It's a cool system though and I enjoyed it quite a bit.
  • not sure what issues you guys are having with your wireless. I have a brand new top end Linksys N router and my PSP connects to it just fine.
  • Are you using WPA2 encryption? The PSP shouldn't be able to connect through it.

I have never had a problem with a specific router, I just have to use a lower level encryption when I need to connect with the PSP (or DS for that matter)

Im personally using WPA2 and my PSP most definatly connects and runs fine on it.  I do have a PSP 3000 compared to the OP's Star Wars ediiton PSP 2000.
  • I have the same White Vader PSP (bought it as broken, all it needed was a new power switch, was previously opened), which are classified as older-2000s. Those can be permanently modded with custom firmware. newer 2000s and all 3000s can only have temporary CFW.

Despite what everyone says, modding PSPs at first can be very confusing as there are several different methods, depending on your PSP's current official firmware version, what kind of PSP you have and what kind of custom firmware you want.

This used to be a good thread, but the links don't immediately work, it takes a bit of effort to find the info you're looking for, based on the first post.

  • I have put signed emulators on my PSP 3000 - no need for cfw or modding.

This is a nes emulator: http://pspcustomfirmware.com/de/nesterj-1-13-signed-emulator.htm

There are other signed emulators on the site as well.
  • Oh cool, never heard of signed emulators. Now that's awesome.
