Best way to search on Ebay?

Yeah basically what the title says, what should i do to cover everything? For example if i search for "Game Boy" on Ebay, 200 results/page and "best matches" in the "sort by"-selection box,  there will usually be 100+ pages. Somewhere on page 51-53 i will get this fucking message that tells me something about 10.000 shown items being the limit and that i need to specify my search (wich is fucking stupid because it already IS as specified as it needs to be).

Then if i search again by choosing "time: newly listed" i get like 300 fucking pages, still stopping around 51-53 as before. This time i get a bunch of results that for some reason didn't show up on "best matches". So am i doing something wrong here or should i just keep going through all the shit by both options?

  • Its hard to follow what you're saying, but search results might be finding international items.
  • We're unable to show you more than 10,000 results. Please refine your search to narrow your results.

I see. I read that you just have to narrow your search by navigating through categories.

It will only go to 10,000 results. No way around it.

If you don't want to do that, you could exclude keywords by adding a minus symbol to products you don't want to show up in the search.

Like -pokemon -pocket -advance. Results that ran off the 10,000 mark will then move up the list.
  • So if i search by "best matches" and exclude some words, should i do the same thing on "newly listed" in order to cover as much as possible?

Do i exclude words in the "advanced" search-area or just on the regular one?
  • You can exclude words in the regular box, too.

Say half your results are for ds styluses(styli)and you don't want them, you could search ds -stylus

If then that filters out the styluses and now there's still a bunch of screen protectors showing up you don't want you can add that too by searching ds -stylus -protector
  • It really depends on how much shit you wanna sift through. I personally don't want to see 99% of the crap that's on there so I do specific searches. For instance, If I'm looking for Flintstones Dino Peak, I type "Flintstones NES" "Flintstones Surprise" "Flintstones Rare" and sometimes misspelled on purpose, like Flinstone because of the amount of dumb ass sellers.

I can't imagine just doing "NES" and going from there, but on the same token that's how you see more stuff.

Also, use the "Save Searches" option and when something in particular your looking for comes up, it will trip the search and you will know right away.
  • Keep in mind when you sort by "best match" or "newly listed" it will only re-organize the list to show the newly listed items first or the best matches first. This doesn't eliminate any listings. vern has the right idea, just use the save search option and try to be a little more specific in your initial search. Soometimes when I search "nintendo" I will exclude the words wii-stylus-ds-gamecube...etc.etc...or if I am looking for something in particular I will search stadium events nes nintendo or something like that.
  • I tried doing a search with exclusions and by just cutting out the fucking iphone/apple/ipod-garbage got it trimmed down from like 300 pages to 65 haha

Although the thing about saving searches, how does that work? Would that mean Ebay sends me a mail whenever 10/20/50 new items are listed òr something?
  • oh and another thing: when you exclude things in the searchbar, is that just for the auction title or description too?
  • The saved search will send you an email once daily if a new listing is listed in the previous 24 hrs. The first time you set it up it will send you everything listing on ebay at the time, then every time one is listed you will get an email for it. It only emails you once a day.
