Need advice on new PS3 hdd. 640GB or larger for under $200

I just had a 500GB Samsung 2.5" hdd die in my PS3. I lost a bunch of things and don't want to go through this again any time soon.

The Samsung 500GB hdd was never that great to begin with since it caused games with cutscenes (FMV) to skip quite a lot and become desync'd. The more I read about this problem, the more I see how widespread it is. The PS3 is VERY

picky about which hard drives it plays nice with.

I nearly bought the

Western Digital Scorpio Blue WD7500BPVT 750GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard (for $119)

but after reading reviews like this:

Cons: BAD for a ps3, will skip/chop/sound off sync

with game cut scene like uncharted/uncharted2/heavy rain/ratchet clank crack in time/etc

PS3 does not like the new technology in this drive

I had to jumper both pins on the drive just for the ps3 to format it.

I realized it would be the same crap as my Samsung. The skipping cutscenes gets really annoying.

I was told the WD6400BEVT version does not have this problem, but it discontinued and being sold for nearly twice

it's original asking price!

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks.

  • alright so basically all new HDD's made by manufacturers are what are called AFD's. Advanced Format Drives. These HDD's use a 4kb byte sector as opposed to the previous, forever standing standard of 512b sectors. Alot of these newer drives are the ones you see people writing reviews like above. Obviously not all new HDDs do this as Im sure Sony isnt use old HDD's in their new PS3's. Basically just try and find an older style drive for guaranteed compatibility. Or if someone has a newer PS3, have them open it up and see what HDD is in it and match it up.
  • Thanks for the input James.

I'd still like to hear from people with an upgraded hdd < 500GB, who know about the skipping problem (many people don't even notice it)

and can assure me theirs isn't doing that.

I have a non ADF Samsung 500GB drive from '08 and it still skips like crazy.

It must be several things that can cause it. I know my drive was also rated slower than

than the stock 80GB Seagate ST980811AS drives too, so maybe that's the culprit.

I'd like to buy the drive as new to get the 3 year warranty and I'd like to avoid paying 2x the amount for an older drive.

alright well thatas good info that even a certain model older drives do it too.  I wonder what else could be causing the issue.  Could be buffer size of the HDD?  Alot of 2.5 HDDs only have an 8MB buffer though you can get them with 16MB. Hmmm.  Ill have to look into this myself as well for my own info.  If I come across anything interesting Ill be sure to let you know.

This should give you everything you need to know, hopefully. It states quite a few other HDDs you could use, so hopefully you can find one that is still in production.
