Hd tv help

So I just recently bought a samsung 51" Plasma tv , so far the only flaw I have noticed is the heat this beast produces.
Is this something I should be concerned, I still have time to take it back, but comparable TVs in LCD have very slow refresh times, really just looking for some advice , this is my first hd tv.

Yeah I was just watching real steel and I could smell it.
  • is it brand new ? mine doesn't smell, but is fairly warm to the touch.
  • Yes less then a week
  • keep the box and save your receipt case it catches on fire
  • Personally I'm not a fan of plasma TVs. What kind of refresh rate were you talking about? My Sony is like 120 or 140, and the only time I notice a problem is when I watch animated DVDs like Simpson's or Family Guy.

Not saying you made a bad choice at all, I just could never see myself buying a plasma.

And I'm not sure if screenburn is still a problem with plasmas, but I wouldn't recommend falling asleep watching a bluray or DVD.

Not sure about the heat issue. One thing I always do when making a big purchase like this, is google the model # and read through as many customer reviews as possible.

  • I managed a high end electronics store for 5years so I know a lot about tvs. TVs have gotten to the point where even the entry model stuff is awesome. There is not much difference in picture qualities especially when playing old games. In my opinion buy the tv that looks the best to your eyes. who cares about specs if you can't see it with your own eyes does it make a difference?

From my experience (I'm not saying all do this) But some retailers will make the tv they wanna sell(More Commission) look better than the others on display so they can say see this one is way better you should buy it. They will run dvd off standard video (480i) and then run the "Better TV" of Blu Ray and HDMI (1080p)

I prefer LCD over Plasma because they are more energy efficient and will last twice the life (about 20years) now my buddy made a good point he said a person is going to upgrade in less then 10 years anyways so who cares.

Do some research and follow your own eyes best way to do it is to bring your own demo material ( fave blu ray or dvd) and try it on all the models and compare. take what your salesman says with a grain of salt and make up your own mind.

Sorry for the long winded comment.

One last point don't be afraid to buy last years model or a display unit. you'll save a ton of cash and they generally come with full warranty.
  • It's a Samsung series 5 530

    I paid 650 for it

I would have gotten a LCD but didn't want to fork out 2/3 grand on one with a good refresh rate.

  • Panasonic makes the best plasmas, nothing against yours. But if you do need repairs to the screen in the future plasmas tend to cost more becuase the screen has gases inside. Most people buy plasma if there into film, becuase they give more depth ( darks are darker ). For gaming make sure you dont leave a game puased to long, you may end up with a burn in.
  • I looked at the specs for the one you bought and it seems like it would be a great unit. are you happy with it?
  • yeah pete, i don't play games on mine either, and have woke up with austin powers menu on for hours, and got to see background burn in for a day or so, but went away after enought colors ran through

use the sleep button if your watching a dvd past 9 o clock   LOL

Yeah socom 4 looks great on it.
So far i would say Im happy with it.
Only concern I had was the heat it puts out
And the faint smell of plastic .
  • plasma run hot that's normal. the smell should go away after a couple weeks after everything settles.
  • I have a plasma too. While LCD's should last longer and run cooler since it uses LED back lights, they're both great. I wouldn't worry much about the quality today, but how long until the light starts to lose brightness. That's the only thing that annoys me, but I still love my plasma.
  • I've got a 50" Panasonic Plasma and it's great for the most part. I wish I had went with a slightly smaller screen since older games look almost too detailed/pixelated because the screen is so big, but it's not enough to be a major issue. Mine gives off some serious heat too. In the winter I can sit in front of it and it's almost as good as a fireplace.
