  • I am currently trying to finish as many NES games this year as possible... so far i've done the following (in order listed below):

    Mega Man 4

    Mickey Mousecapade

    Super Mario Bros.

    Commando

    Zelda 2

    Contra

    Mega Man 5

    Mega Man 6

    Mega Man 3

    Jaws

    Felix The Cat

    Power Blade

    Mega Man 1

    Mega Man 2

    Super C

    Dragon Warrior

    Ninja Gaiden

Also done these few SNES games:

    Mega Man X

    Super Mario World

    Magical Quest: Mickey Mouse

    Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
  • I just beaten Dr. Jekyll and Mr.Hyde. Which is strange I was told to get the good ending you have beat a boss as Mr. Hyde but I never go to the boss and I still got a happy wedding scene and it still show Mr. Hyde atthe end screen.

  • Fuck yeah! (good way to start off a message huh?) Just beat Ninja Gaiden sword only (again), this time with just 2 deaths (no continues used). This was my second time ever beating Ninja Gaiden sword only, first time was a couple days ago finishing it with 11 deaths (3 continues used), and while it was a good game, especially so being I hadn't played this game before that since November 2009 (during a high score contest at NintendoAge), but I knew I could do much better. Gave it a few more attempts after that, each ending in failure, which means I had too many deaths, more than I wanted to have so each time reset and started over. Gave it a day of rest, come back to it again tonight, first try, get through almost the whole game without losing any lives, finally having my first death in stage 6-2, and just one more life lost in the very next stage.

And to think, if only in that one spot in stage 6-2 I had paid better attention and remembered to get a bat's attention first before jumping over a gap between platforms I would've had only 1 death. The other death was in stage 6-3 due to the jumping creatures near the very end of that last stage, always get caught by the one that leaps down right behind you, almost always gets me and once again did. Wow, so close to a no deather on this one, suppose if I kept at it I could beat this one sword only without dying, eh, but think I'll leave it at this for now, not looking to frustrate myself with trying to attain perfection that I know won't come easy. Didn't have too much worries against the Jaquio, but once I got to the Demon being the absolute last battle and hands sweaty and shaking, nervous friggin' wreck, I did not want to fail, doing so would've sent me all the way back with a bloody malth (I've would've quit and started over to try again).

I only nabbed three items in the entire game, all by accident (was trying my best to avoid all pick-ups), one was a blue potion (points only, okay, no problem) in stage 2-2 when striking one of those reaper enemies, the other was a windmill throwing star (dammit...okay, just don't use it) in stage 5-3 when striking a sniper enemy, but did not use it and thankfully lost it when starting the next stage, and last was a blue ninja art power-up (no biggie, had no arts to use).

I've beaten Ninja Gaiden a couple times before without dying, that which totally surprised me being as how hard this game used to be for me, but obviously only so because I just never played it enough to get good enough at it. That was impressive, because while any game can be easy with enough practice, this wasn't one to easily master, and still as with any game that I feel that I've gotten really good at, I needed better proof that yes indeed, that game has been mastered, nothing else to do, beaten the best way that I could. So, what better way to do that than to strip myself of all aid and stick to just what I am provided with at the very start of my quest, in this game, Ryu Hayabusa's sword, that's it, no ninjutsu arts, no health restores, nothing but his sharp ninja blade. My confidence and persistence paid off, I did it.

Figured, while the vid was being uploaded I'd go ahead and see how badly I could do at NGII. Yeah, I did bad alright, this game is really much harder than the first game sword only. I tried a sword only game, ended up being a mostly sword only game, but problem is they give you shuriken at the start and you always have something on hand, and while I didn't intentionally use any subweapons, there were a couple spots that groups of enemies forced me to when I was knocked against a wall and trying to retaliate with my sword, being knocked against a wall repeatedly, shot instead. And ugh, enemies are much harder to defeat, quite a bit smarter, birds don't come at you so quick that they fly off screen, they stay close, the bats swoop up and down faster, and enemies are placed in more difficult locations. Doesn't help that you seem to get knocked back very hard in this game, and the sword has even less vertical range than in the first game where in that game you don't have to duck to slash low enemies, in this one though you do, and I found myself missing enemies with my sword a lot more often. How many deaths, in dunno, how many continues, lost count but somewhere around a dozen, maybe more, sounds about right. May, or may not continue to see if I can actually play a good sword only game of NGII, but probably not.

  • Finished up Dragon Warrior, for the billionth time. On to the next game!

6 NES games beaten this year

Detailed log (note: 1st game, 2nd game, 3rd game, ect., only refers to the amount of times beaten since 8/12/2002, though in the case of re-beats, the amount of times beaten total may exceed what is shown here):

    Super Mario Bros.

    1/1/2012

7th game: beat it with 8 deaths, no warps used, no shortcuts taken

8th game: beat it without dying, no warps used, no shortcuts taken

    1/22/2012

    Super Mario Bros. 2

    1/2/2012

5th game: beat it using Mario only, no warps (didn't keep track of number of deaths, kind of a lot)

6th game: beat it using Mario only with 6 deaths, no warps

    1/3/2012

7th game: beat it using Mario only without dying, no warps (1st time ever!)

    Super Mario Bros. 3

    1/3/2011

3rd game: beat it with 15 deaths (9 deaths in world 7...wtf!?), no warps, didn't use power-up sub-menu (which explains all of the deaths, duh, and doesn't help when I only play this game once every several years or longer and I throw an extra challenge into it, don't know what the hell I was thinking - plus this game is just way too long, but did beat it quicker than I ever had before, 2 hours 45 minutes, all levels played, compared to the usual 3+ hours)

Double Dragon (played for low score contest on NA)

    2/18/2012

3rd game: lowest score upon beating game 1 death 45080

    2/19/2012

7th game: lowest score upon beating game 1 death 38930

    2/22/2012

8th game: lowest score upon beating game without dying 32890 (1st time ever!)

    Ninja Gaiden

    2/24/2012

10th game: beat it sword only with 11 deaths / 3 continues used

    2/26/2012

11th game: beat it sword only with just 2 deaths (1st death in 6-2 by bat [knocked me into pit], 2nd death in 6-3 by jumping creature [ambushed me from behind]) / no continues used - fuck yeah! Now that was some awesome ninja skills there!, score 234900

Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos

    2/26/2012

6th game: beat it mostly sword only (accidently shot a couple times when knocked onto a wall by enemies) with I dunno, somewhere around a dozen continues used (this game is a bitch compared to the first game)

    2/27/2012

7th game: beat it mostly sword only with about a half dozen continues used (don't know why I'm trying to play this sword only, heck, the game pisses me off just playing normal with everything)

    2/28/2012

8th game: beat it sword only (accidently used a single shuriken off a wall in one stage, otherwise sword only), with a few continues used

9th game: beat it sword only (sword only entirely, about time!) with 6 deaths / no continues used

10th game: beat it sword only with 3 deaths / no continues used

11th game: beat it sword only with 2 deaths (1st death by Jaquio [didn't have enough health going into this fight], 2nd death by suicide so I could regain full health for the final battles) / no continues used, score 654500

So I just beat Ninja Gaiden 2 this morning, sword only, played all through the night to achieve what finally ended up being a really good playthru.

Now this was a tough game to beat sword only with few lives lost, this compared to the first Ninja Gaiden. I played this game well over 2 dozen times, not all complete games though since most I ended up resetting and starting over, actually finishing 6 times over the coarse of the couple days that I played it, while with the first Ninja Gaiden, had that one beaten sword only without using any continues within less than a half a dozen tries.

What makes NGII so much harder to beat well using just the sword is first of all, the game provides you with shuriken at the very start of each stage as well as a little bit of ammo to use it, so once I got it into my thick head to remember to dump all ammo right away at the start of each stage (so I wouldn't accidently use it to kill something), it made that part a bit easier. The other is the clone shadow Ryu power, just one more thing for me to have to avoid, and this wasn't optional as with accidently nabbing firepower of any sorts which their use could be avoided, if I got one of these shadows I'd either have to start the game over again or at least purposely kill myself right away to get rid of it so I couldn't take advantage of its power. Collision detection with the sword isn't quite as good as the first Ninja Gaiden game, you now actually have to duck to slash lower enemies unlike the first game which in there you could still hit them even from a standing position (makes sense though), plus I also found myself missing more often in the second game, too many times seeing my blade harmlessly pass through an enemy's body, then to get hit by it a moment later because of my failed attack. And the levels in NGII are more complex, offering a lot more different types of challenges, ever changing wind, darkness, flowing water, slippery ice, and more aggressive foes to stand in your way, such as the clones of the bosses from the first game, Bomberhead being the most difficult to deal with. And I had to play this one sometimes with a bit more patience, while with the first game I was for the most part able to keep moving ahead at a constant pace, this one there were times I had to wait more often for the right time to go on.

So, finally after having played this one to death for the few days that I did, I finally manage to play a game equally as well as I had last done with the first Ninja Gaiden several days before that. I beat both games having only 2 deaths (no continues used) using just Ryu's sword to defeat all of his foes. My deaths in NGII, first being by Jaquio, not really that hard of a near to final boss, I just got to him with low health as well as low confidence to beat him my first encounter. My second death, this was a suicide, an intentional sacrifice which was necessary in order for me to be able to face the final boss trio with maximum health. I really shouldn't have lost against Jaquio when I did, I don't usually, but if I hadn't The Wall would've gotten me for sure with as low of health I had or would have had at that time, so that death was coming regardless, while that second one was just to guarantee I didn't have anymore (though I nearly did). Interestingly, even with just a sword to fight with, this was easily my best played game of Ninja Gaiden II, with my least amount of deaths, never managed in the past to beat this one without dying as I had the first game, but I bet, with how well I did with the limitations I placed on myself for this run that if I were to play using everything the game has to offer, I could surely no death this one as well, very confident of that.
